The True Advantage of Shutters There is no window covering that enhances the beauty of your home and shapes light quite as elegantly as shutters. And yet shutters do much more than that; they reduce energy use, which means savings on energy costs. Covering your windows with shutters is one of the easiest ways to go green. Shutters can keep your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer. They can provide light control and privacy. Shutters give you total command of your space by allowing slight or great changes in your view, your privacy and the amount of sunlight you let in. Shutters combine elegance and functionality like no other window covering. Shutters provide light control, energy efficiency, and protection from UV damage to furniture and flooring.

Windows: The Largest Energy Breach in your Home Up to 50% of a home s heating and cooling energy escapes through its windows. When compared to the roof or insulated walls, even standard double pane windows allow 10 times more energy to escape. One of the best ways to reduce your utility bills and save money is to simply cover your windows with shutters. How shutters work to control energy Shutters reduce heating, cooling and lighting energy needs in 3 ways; 1. Solar Heat Control by allowing the sun s rays to come in during the winter and blocking them out in the summer, you can change your windows from being an energy breach to an energy source. On winter days, keep your shutter louvers open to allow the warm sunlight into your home. On hot summer days, keep your shutter louvers closed to keep your home cool.

2. Heat Flow Control by closing your Shutter louvers, you can keep the heat within your home instead of allowing it to escape through your windows. This is especially important on evenings where temperatures shift significantly. 3. Lighting Control shutters are a great way to control lighting into your home. Shutters allow you to make simple changes in the amount of light that enters your home, just by adjusting the tilt of the louvers. Added Benefits with Shutters When you buy shutters, you re not only getting energy savings, you re also enhancing the beauty of your home. And with ShutterSmart s PolyClad Hardwood Shutters, you get so much more: Timeless beauty that never goes out of style An increase of the resale value of your home Immediate enhancement of curb appeal and the overall look of your home Ease of maintenance Superb light and visibility control Enduring luster for years to come

The ShutterSmart EnergyGuard System Our ShutterSmart EnergyGuard Shutter Insulation System is our polyclad wood shutter designed specifically to give you energy savings at the levels required by the federal energy tax credit program. This system was purely created to restrict energy loss or gain within the home. Unlike regular shutters, ShutterSmart EnergyGuard features Thermocore louvers and panels with rail strips that nest tightly into frames giving you the highest level of insulation available. Here s how it works: Thermocore Louvers for Superior Insulation Our Thermocore louvers have an air pocket within the louvers that trap air inside of each louver, giving an insulating effect similar to double glazed windows. On all wide window shutters, the Thermocore louvers come reinforced with aluminum inserts allowing you to build large size panels for maximum viewing. Thermocore louvers are attached to the tilt rod with Twist lock hooks that, unlike staples, will never pull out of the louvers. Shutter Panels with Rail Strips nest tightly into frames Shutter Panels are designed specifically to nest tightly into frames and reduce airflow. The fit of a shutter panel into the frame is a key part of restricting airflow into your home. ShutterSmart starts by using frames with a 3/4 light stop, instead of small 3/8 light stops used by most shutter manufacturers. Then we ensure that our panel stiles and rails fit snugly into the frame. ShutterSmart EnergyGuard uses rail strips specifically designed to block off any air flow coming in from the windows. 7 Inside Mount Trim Frame Envelopes the Window The inside mount Trim frame is the best way to maximize insulation in your windows. The Trim Frame overlaps the window on all sides with a 1 ½ decorative molding. This practically seals your window and reduces hot or cold airflow. PolyClad wood construction with Superior Strength and Insulation ShutterSmart features a polyclad wood construction that entails a solid wood core within a polyclad surface. This not only strong panels just like the highest quality wood shutters but also features a poly surface that is low maintenance and has the highest energy control of any shutter construction. 8 Superior Thermal Insulation with ShutterSmart EnergyGuard Heat flow through windows is best shown graphically in thermal imaging. Red areas indicate heat while Green areas indicate cool temperatures. Notice the significant reduction in heat when ShutterSmart EnergyGuard Shutter Insulation System is used. ShutterSmart EnergyGuard Shutter Insulation System delivers up to a 30 degree protection against outdoor heat and cold extremes. Regular Window Red Areas indicate Heat Green Areas indicate Cool Temperature Energy Guard Shutter This Thermal image shows how a window with ShutterSmart EnergyGuard reduces energy loss when compared to a plain uncovered window. Tested, Certified and What that means for You ShutterSmart EnergyGuard Shutter Insulation System is tested and certified to qualify for the rigid standards of the Federal Energy Tax Credit. When you insulate your windows with ShutterSmart EnergyGuard, you can qualify to earn a tax credit of 30% of the cost of the shutters and up to a maximum of $1500*. These tax credits apply to all purchases that are installed by December 31, So what are the required guidelines for the Federal Energy Tax Credit? The guidelines require a U factor and a SHGC lower than 0.3. ShutterSmart EnergyGuard Shutter has been tested and exceeds both these requirements. Here s more information on what these ratings are. The U Factor The U Factor is a measure of heat transmittance through a barrier. The walls of your home typically have a U factor of Windows typically have a U Factor of 0.5. ShutterSmart EnergyGuard brings the U factor of your windows down under 0.3, almost tripling the energy efficiency of a standard double pane window. The result is that heat loss through your windows is cut by up to two thirds. This keeps your home warm at nights and during winter.

SHGC Solar Heat Gain Coefficient Solar Heat Gain Coefficient is the solar energy that comes into your home through your windows. The coefficient goes from 0 to 1, indicating the percentage energy that comes into your home. Double pain windows have a heat gain coefficient of 0.75, meaning that 75% of the heat gets into your home. ShutterSmart EnergyGuard reduces the heat gain to under 0.3 which means that less than 30% of the solar heat gets into your home. This keeps your home cool when there is direct sunlight during the summer days. * Download the Manufacturers Certification for tax credit details and descriptions.
