Waste Management at Hong Kong International Airport: The Story of the Three Multiples The Hong Kong Institute of Engineers Environmental Division Annual Forum 27 April 2018 Mike Kilburn

Agenda 1. HKIA overview 2. The Three Multiples 3. What s next? 4. Conclusion

Airport Authority Hong Kong (AA) AAHK A statutory body wholly-owned by the Hong Kong SAR Government Vision To strengthen Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) as the leading international aviation hub and a key engine for the economic growth of Hong Kong Achievements 70 World s Best Airport awards since

Overview of HKIA Opening date 8 July 1998 Site area 1,955 hectares Runways Two Terminal area >850,000 m 2 Parking stands 182 Workforce AA: 2,200 HKIA: 73,000 5

Solid growth Passenger Traffic millions of passengers 155% 203% 72.9 millions of tonnes 5 4 Cargo Air Traffic Traffic Movement 158% 4.94 thousands Year-on-year growth of 2.9%, 9.7% and 2.3% respectively. 7

We collaborate with our business partners, adopting a systematic airport-wide approach to manage, reduce and mitigate the airport s environmental footprint. 8

Target To reduce / recycle / recover 50% of total waste generated by 2021 Reduce Recycle Recover >50% 9

Benchmarking by aspect: HKIA vs best-in-class Provide strategic direction towards world s greenest airport pledge, and suggestions for continuous improvement We benchmarked our performance against 23 comparable airports to help us determine both the priorities for improvement and opportunities to learn from others. 10

Introducing the Three Multiples Who are the producers? What are the waste types? What are the solutions? Producers Waste Types Waste Type #1 Waste Type #2 Waste Type #3 Solutions Producer A Producer B Producer C Producer D Solution #1 Solution #2 Solution #3 11

Conclusion HKIA is among the greenest airports, but we have identified a need to continually minimise waste generated at AA and our BPs. Pursuit of the greenest airport pledge requires AA to adopt an airport-wide strategy addressing the Three Multiples of: producers spread across the airport; waste types generated; and solutions needed to minimise waste from airport operations. As the airport operator, we work with our BPs to develop and implement multiple solutions airport-wide. Collectively, we can achieve more. 26
