Water Treatment Solutions Presented by: Mike Brown, CWT Regional Sales Manager

Water Treatment Goals 1. Maximize Efficiency by keeping the Cooling System free of Scale and Fouling 2. Maximize Cooling System life by reducing the potential for Corrosion 3. Provide a safe environment by reducing the potential for harmful Bacteria.

4 The New Water Treatment Circle 1. Corrosion Control LB 2. Scale / Deposition Control 4. Legionella (Management) Control 3. Microbial (Fouling) Control

Typical Water-Cooled Chiller System

Cooling Tower Loop

Scale Control 1. Maintain the desired the level of Cooling Water dissolved solids by controlling the blowdown. 2. Blowdown should be controlled automatically with a conductivity controller 3. Addition of scale inhibitors allow for higher conductivities and cleaner surfaces 4. The Addition of Acid can be used in extreme cases to control scale.

Corrosion Control 1. Raise the ph of the water by allowing the cooling water alkalinity to cycle-up. 2. Corrosion inhibitors can be added.

Microbiological Control 1. Use of a Dual Biocide Program Oxidizing Biocides Non-Oxidizing Biocides 2. Proper Feed Control of the Biocides 3. Annual Cooling Tower Cleanings

10 Let s go back to 1976 for a brief review of Legionnaires Disease

221 Sick! 34 Deaths!

12 An unknown disease & 34 deaths! An intense CDC investigation! No known cause! But, we had a name: LEGIONNAIRES DISEASE!

13 that Legionnaires disease is caused by an aquatic BACTERIA!

Caused by Inhalation of Water Vapors containing Legionella Bacteria

15 Transmission & Infection Legionellosis is not transmitted from person to person it is Not Contagious Caused by Inhalation (into the lungs) of water aerosols containing Legionella Bacteria Caused by Aspiration (into the lungs) of water during drinking, coughing or gagging

16 Faucets & shower heads Spas & whirlpool tubs Humidifiers Decorative fountains Sprinkler Systems Cooling Towers Evaporative condensers What about Condensation Drip Pans?

17

18 A spray mist applied to produce at a grocery store High levels of bacteria were found in the spray water. 13 cases of Legionella resulting in 2 deaths!

19

20

>160 F = 100% Rapid Kill 140 F = 90% Kill in minutes 122 F = 90% Kill in hours F Optimum temperature range below 77 F Mostly dormant, but viable

22 Immune Suppressed (Transplants, Cancer, Cardiac, Steroid/Drug Therapy) Elderly, Sick and/or In Poor Health Heavy Smokers, Lung Disease, Diabetes However, ~24% of Legionnaires disease cases occur in otherwise healthy individuals

and 40 Years Later We continue to learn about Legionella and we now have a Standard to address Legionellosis ASHRAE Standard 188!

ANSI/ASHRAE Standard is Published!

ASHRAE Standards / Special Note:

26 Aug. 2015: State of New York ASHRAE Standard 188 becomes Law August 17, 2015 Contact: Jodi Scott / ASHRAE Public Relations / jscott@ashrae.org ATLANTA With 12 confirmed dead and more than 120 cases of infection due to legionellosis, New York City Council on Thursday adopted legislation that requires adherence to part of ASHRAE s newly published Legionella standard. The legislation addresses registration and inspection of cooling towers. It requires owners to create and file a plan to maintain equipment to comply with Sections 5, 6 and 7.2 of the new ANSI/ASHRAE Standard , Legionellosis: Risk Management for Building Water Systems.

27

In a NUTSHELL Compliance with Standard 188 requires facility owners (their managers) to: 1. Establish a Team with assigned responsibilities & accountabilities 2. Create, Practice, Audit and Maintain a Water Management Plan for legionellosis risk management Describe Water System Assess the Hazard Establish Hazard Controls Audit the Plan

ANSI/ASHRAE SECTION PAGE Foreword 2 1. Purpose 2 2. Scope 2 3. Definitions 2 4. Compliance 3 5. Building Survey/s 4 6. General Requirements (The WMP) 4 7. Requirements for Designing Building Water Systems References 11 Normative Annex A: Health Care Facilities 12 Informative Annex B: Bibliography 15 Informative Annex C: Guidance if Legionella Testing is Utilized 16

Section 5 Building Surveys Determine if your building is a high risk for legionellosis: 1. Multiple Housing with Centralized Hot Water systems; 2. Buildings with 10 or more Floors 3. Healthcare facility w/patient stays over 24 hours; 4. Medical facility treating occupants with burns, compromised immune systems, transplants, chemotherapy, diabetes, or chronic lung disease; 5. Housing for occupants over the age of 65.

Bottom Line for Section 6 Implement a Water Management Program (WMP) for Cooling Towers Whirlpool Spas Ornamental Fountains Misters, Atomizers, Humidifiers, Air Washers Other Devices that release water droplets

2016: Summer of CDC Focus

CDC Releases a Comprehensive Report on Legionnaires Disease

Legionnaires Cases Quadruple!

CDC: LD Vitalsigns (June 2016) 1 in 10 Legionnaires disease is deadly for about 10% of people who get it. 9 in 10 CDC investigations show most outbreaks were caused by problems preventable with more effective water management.

CDC Provides a TOOLKIT for Standard 188!

1. Conduct a Survy of the Building Water Systems to develop the Water Treatment Program (WMP) 2. Define the Water Treatment Program (WMP) feed, monitoring & control procedures 3. Establish limits for program controls 4. Establish monitoring/testing procedures & frequency 5. Establish corrective actions (for out of control) 6. Establish record-keeping & documentation procedures

SUMMARY Legionella is a common bacteria in found in water systems; Contracting Legionella is Not Simple, involves many factors: Favorable conditions for Legionella growth Method of transmitting water containing Legionella Inhalation by Susceptible persons All Cooling Water & Potable Water Systems are important; ANSI/ASHRAE Standard and the CDC Toolkit Owners, Managers, Design Engineers and Water Treaters must work together to Must Establish a Water Management Program to minimize the risk of Legionellosis
