5 ENERGY LOCAL PUBLIC UTILITIES generate 84 billion kilowatt hours of electricity per year. They also manage around 45 % of electricity distribution networks in Germany. That corresponds to 807,000 kilometres 20 times the earth's circumference. In addition, they manage a 335,000-kilometre gas distribution network. WATER/WASTE WATER LOCAL PUBLIC UTILITIES deliver 121 litres of drinking water per citizen per day. They operate a drainage network that is 135,000 kilometres long almost 11 times the length of the German motorway system. More than 99 % of Germany has a drinking-water supply. BROADBAND LOCAL PUBLIC UTILITIES provide more than 6 million citizens with broadband infrastructure. In the upcoming years they will invest more than 1 billion Euros into digital infrastructure ranging from fibre to Long Range Wide Area Networks (LoRaWAN) in municipalities. Thereby local public utilities form the basis for a gigabyte society. WASTE MANAGEMENT AND TOWN CLEANING LOCAL PUBLIC UTILITIES dispose of 31,500 tonnes of waste every day that's equivalent to the weight of the TV Tower in Berlin.
