Case for Moneera American University of Beirut January 22, 2016

Lebanon s Power Sector O Innovative Financing 1

Power generation plants & distribution infrastructure are old, badly maintained and using the wrong fuel 2

Lebanon s power sector is a victim of the chronic political impasse and affects every Lebanese citizen Example: Jiyeh plant (commissioned in 1970) now operates at 60% below their design values; with the fuel consumption (per unit of electricity produced) being 20% to 30% higher than the design value 3

Lebanon is mostly using costly and polluting fuel oil to generate its electric power requirements 3,500 3,000 2,500 2,000 1,500 1, MW MW Power Demand Forecast for Lebanon ( ) CAGR Lebanon s Current Power Generation Capacity 50%+ Gap by 2020 Lebanon s power demand is expected to increase by 38% between 2007 and %+ of power generated is using fuel oil for EDL power plants and diesel for domestic generators. Hydro power is around 4.5% or 100 MW Lebanon aspires to have 12% of its capacity from renewables in

Lebanon s Power Sector O Innovative Financing 5

MO is a non-profit, small scale, clean power provider serving rural power users Interface with EDL & Net Meeting For example, 4MW MO system can power 800-1,000 homes 6

Photovoltaic(PV) costs have fallen dramatically, the time where PV competes with fossil fuels is now This is fueling a shift from Producer Centric centralized system models to customer centric decentralized models 7

We are one-stop-shop support entity for communities to build & operate reliable clean power systems MO s role is to facilitate the development and operation of power generation project 8

Ultimately, we propose to build micro-grids across Lebanon with a vision to reach 28 projects by MW capacity added. This project will enable Lebanon achieve its 12% renewable energy target by 2020 Footprint of each site: 300m x 300m. 28 sites will have footprint of 2.5 km 2 Through the knowledge built and the economies of scale, we will enable the private sector to compete/collaborate with us We aspire that this franchise model can be expanded into regional countries devastated by war such as Syria and Iraq when possible Preliminary cost is $5 million per site (total project cost ~$150 million including overheads) 9

Cost Range ( /kwh) MO will cost a fraction of alternative power generation in Lebanon HIGH 8 17 LOW 5-2 MO s PV / Wind 10 EDL Utility Diesel Generator Excess Power 10

The objective is to relief EDL grid enabling it to focus on providing power to densely populated areas Cheap Reliable and abundant Community owned Creates locally focused jobs Negligible transmission costs Environmentally Friendly (no pollution, minimized CO 2 emissions, quiet) Sustainable energy source Expandable Replicable MO Benefits Resilient and relieves the national grid to serve other customers Can be integrated with other MO projects and the national grid Enables solutions for other energy based local needs such as air conditioning, irrigation, clean water generation, transportation fuel, etc 11

We are proud of our partnership with the American University of Beirut and Adenium Capital Collaborate with the Faculty of Engineering & Architecture: FEA to assist MO through technical consultations Provide a graduate student and a team of final year undergrad students to take ownership of MO design and construction MO to build a pilot solar plant on the FEA Bechtel building s rooftop Collaborate with Adenium Capital: Help MO in the technical site selection, design and construction of the project Assist MO in the procurement, EPC bidding and logistics matters related to the project Guide MO in financing applications including international organizations, donors, banks, and other debt/equity providers 12

UNDP has committed to fund a large portion of the pilot project UNDP has committed to fund 50% of the project. Moneera has raised funds to cover the other 50% UNDP tender documents are out and will close Feb 8 th. Please spread the word! Collaborating with UNDP is a great milestone for MO as it will establish credibility to seek funding from international organizations for the full scale implementation 13

We also proud of the our partnerships with Boond, Jubaili and SMA Moneera is leveraging Boond s extensive expertise in solar energy social entrepreneurship in India AR Jubaili are our genset technology partner that will efficiently complement our solar power systems Renowned leader in inverter technology & control, SMA is providing Moneera with technical and component support IT and Telecommunication partner helping Moneera build the hardware and software of its systems 14

In the next 6 month, it is critical for Moneera with the help of its partners to deliver against key milestones Sep 2015 Jan 2016 Jul 2016 AUB Pilot AUB Pilot Moneera 1 Funding Technical Moneera 2 Site & Funding Technical MO Live!
