Step on the Gas with Biogas EU Projects: Success Stories Thorsten KLAES, LEE sarl CFO And Partner of 4Europe 13/10/010 IFAS, ECB, Birkenfeld

L.e.e. s.àr.l. - Presentation and EU Projects The company is a Spin off of the European Project LSDN (Local Substainable Network) and was established in Employees: 12 Activity sector: bioenergy plants engineering company Design and operation of biogas plants at all scales Industrial Municipal and Agricultural sectors Agriculture and Forestry Consulting R&D projects, EC funded projects Company philosophy Multidisciplinarity thanks to the experts of different sectors International Network Long term Experience Client focused : independance vis a vis the equipment suppliers

L.e.e. s.àr.l. - Presentation Scope of services A) Result oriented studies - preparation of realization 1. Regional master plans biomass Preliminary talk with definition of practical content Analysis of the existing - Actors analysis - Material flow analysis - Energy demand analysis - Legal coherences Development of project sketches Planning of a realization strategy Public relations First realization of measures (key projects) Interpretation of key projects and definition of deeper approach 2. Feasibility studies Combustion/gasification of solid biomass Concepts for residual heat from biogas plants (for example: Hygienization concepts for manure/ drying concepts for manure) Supply of single projects with heat (for example: greenhouse) Energy station in industrial areas/ particular companies (for example: heat and steam) Local heat concepts Material flow analysis Heat demand analysis Checking of regulatory framework Location specific integration of the plant Identification of a process concept Calculation of profitability Possible financing plans and supporting tools

L.e.e. s.àr.l. - Presentation Scope of Services B) Installation planning and supervision - practical realization Planning Construction management Approval of the completed installation Implementation C) Optimization of processes and streams 1. Installation and process optimization 2. Operation of biogas plants 3. Agricultural advice with the software Agro-BioGas Material flow management for agricultural enterprises Transportation and spreading of biodigestate Nutrient balance and fertilizer spreading management Accounting system Activity reports 4. Supply of biomass D) Research projects - exploration of practical challenges Project idea and Proposal redaction Project management Dissemination

FP5 Cooperation- A practical example ProGrass Objective: implementation a new technique of grass valorisation into an existing Biogas plant in Redange. This technique allows to produce: 1. grass fibres that will be able to be used in buildings insulation (non-treated natural insulating) 2. vegetable proteins that can be used for cattle feeding. The product staying in the transformation process can therefore be energetically valorised in a biomethanisation installation.

FP5 Cooperation- A practical example ProGrass

FP5 Cooperation- A practical example ProGrass Gramitherm innovative Isolation Material of Grass

FP7 Cooperation- A practical example ENERCOM Polygeneration of energy, fuels and fertilisers from biomass residues and sewage sludge The aims: For Soil-Concept SA, operator of a composting platform for sewage sludge and greenary waste the issue was to reduce the volumes of produced compost because of its transportation costs. For LEE Sarl, to diversify its scope of technological know-how by gaining experience in the field of gasification. The outputs: The successful outcome is not only an innovative concept for decentralised supply of RE but also the creation of a new spin-off SYNERCO Sarl. SYNERCO, bringing together LEE and its technologcial partners, will have the exclusive rights to market and sell this concept in the EU and abroad, as the owner of the generated know how. 9 IEEA A Practical Example for Intelligent Energy Europe BIOPROFARM Promotion of Biomethanisation in Agricultural Environment as a Decentralised Renewable Energy Resource for Europe The aims: is to increase the valorisation of the agricultural biomass to generate energy. Addressed to relevant stakeholders like farmers, entrepreneurs, investors and public decision-makers, BIOPROFARM aims at eliminating the existing barriers on a regional level and promoting the technology to create added value for the region. The outcomes: Identification of potential clients for LEE in transnational markets Completed awareness campaigns for the potential target clients Elimination of the legal and administrative barriers for agricultural biogas market uptake

FP5 A Practical Example for Cooperation in ENERGY ENERGATTERT Optimisation of the energy valorisation of Agricultural Biomass matter The aims: to find and to test different improvements to increase energetic output of an installation. Development of an improved engine, process and profitability optimisation The outcomes: 1st Successful reference installation in Belgium for LEE Securing the market for biogas engineering companies: demonstration that it can be possible to produce energy for a cost of less than 0.05 /kwh. To raise awareness of the professionals and the political responsible on the interest of biogas as renewable energy supply and sustainable agricultural diversification.

CIP A practical Example for Eco-Innovation BIOCYCLA Optimising Agricultural Biogas Cycle Management System The aims: Bring a prototype software for the management of biogas plants to the market, Improvement of environmental and economic performance of biogas plants The outputs: Added value product development Widening of the market segment and diversification of product/service offer Funded identification and marketing campaing for the potential target clients

Life Long Learning A practical Example Leonardo Da Vinci INERGPRO I ( ), INERGPRO II ( ) The aims: The objective of the project is to improve the cooperation between industry and vocational training and the realization of European structures for cooperation in the scope of renewable energies and by that the improvement of our position in our main sector area The outputs: Funding of students long-term placements in LEE The integration of foreign students helped to build up transnational contacts that help to open new market segments with companies, universities, research centres Integration of LEE in a network around RE which improved our position in our sector area

EU Projects: Step on the gas with biogas! The advantages for an Small and Medium Company Possibility of developping new technologies with a limited financial risk Possible diversification of core activities Building up of an international network of excellence an of core-competences with all-over Europe partners

LEE and 4EUROPE : A logical outcome Why 4EUROPE? Based on this successful experiences over the last 10 years LEE has decided : To fill the gap between the 1st stop-shop of the info givers EIC, CC etc and the client in need of funding/r&d/ipr securing To adress the barriers commonly faced by SMEs : Complexity of EU programmes Language problem No/poor knowledge of EU admin and financial rules Time-consuming admin and coordination management SME structure: everyone does a bit of everything no R&D dedicated personnel To create 4EUROPE with its long term partners
