The company was established in the year 1995 by the biologists Beate R. Sellner and Burkhard Ramsch. The company is involved in innovative and trend-setting technologies in the field of water purification. The planned and build plants are distributed for drinking water production, brackish and sea water desalination, aqua culture systems, aquaristics (hobby and show size aquaria) and for laboratories. In den scope of drinking water production AquaCare builds reverse osmosis units (R.O.) that produces pure water starting with 30 litres per day. These small units are used for domestic purposes and for hobby aquaria. AquaCare offers their customers the full service program with competent consultation, estimation of the feed water, installing and maintaining the units. drinking water unit 5RO Systems with pressure pumps are build by AquaCare from hundred litres to hundreds of cubic meters per hour. Desalination of brackish and sea water starts with 7 to tons per day. Of course the complete after sales service is available. Especially in the area of the Arabian states the maintaining is made by the subsidiary company AquaCare Egypt. RO unit HP12,000 In the scope of ultra pure water AquaCare designs units from some litres to several cubic meters per R.O. unit HP720,000 (40 m 3 /h) hour. The integrated components depend on the feed water quality and the demanded pure water standards. Used techniques are reverse osmosis (R.O.), nano filtration, micro filtration, adsorption, ion exchange resins, UV radiation, and disinfection with chlorine dioxide. The activities of AquaCare in the field of aqua culture and aquaristics implies consulting, planning and constructing of biological and physical water treatment plants for breeding and keeping of aquatic organisms in fresh and sea water. The used components for big units are build on the customers demands for small units different sizes of standard units are available. AquaCare owns a license for the sea water flotation system AquaFlotor patented by Research Centre Jülich. 5 Corporate capabilities de-nitrification system RBR900 For effective enrichment of calcium and alkalinity (buffer capacity) in sea water tanks AquaCare has developed and patented the Turbo-Chalk-Reactor. These units are available up to 3.6 kg Calcium per day. The Roto-Bio-Reaktor is patented by the Research Centre Jülich, too. This method prevents the channel forming of the filter bed that occurs very often in other systems. The nitrate is continuously reduced to gaseous nitrogen at stable transforming rates. Autotrophic systems based on sulphur are available, too. Especially for small systems the ADN filters are world wide approved. Therefore AquaCare produces own injection moulding parts. Turbo Chalk Reactor size 6 Control systems for above units and plants are made by a Siemens S7 PLC. Depending on the demands of the customer these systems can realize a complete monitoring with web-cam and remote control via internet. hobby coral reef tank with 4 m 3 volume Supervision of the installed units or scientific inquests of biological or physical systems is another field of AquaCare activity. On behalf of the client most of the examinations handle with the biological start up of a system or with the long term stability of them. Experiments to optimise resources or to examine what process is the best to solve the customer s problems are other assignments of AquaCare. Sea water show aquaria can be manufactures in nearly all dimensions, weather small hobby tanks for private persons or big show aquaria for exhibitions. The installed technique is developed for keeping fish, soft and hard corals or special organisms with special needs. The principle of Juelich suspended flow principle outlet release conus rotation chamber flotate foam conus water inlet venturi air inlet Field of application In all marine systems wastes are continuously produced. Fishes secrete most of the food in form of ammonia/ammonium (= NHx), protein, amino acids and fibres. To prevent fish and other animals against toxic concentrations, these substances must be eliminated or changed into harmless material. With biological filtration almost every substance may be converted into carbon dioxide, water, nitrate, phosphate and sulphate - mineralization. But these products accumulate. With skimming or flotation proteins and some other substances are taken out of the system before the biological filtration works even sand will be eliminated if the organic load is high (coskimming). The raising of nitrate and phosphate lowers with skimming. The water has lower concentrations of biological oxidizing substances. So the redox (ORP) is higher and the animals grow better. If high concentrations of organic matter occur (death of an animal, too much food), a biological working filter reacts very slowly. Bacteria must adapt to the new input. Especially nitrifying bacteria Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter need a long time to react to the new concentration. The flotation process reacts automatically and prevent a rising of toxic products like NHx and nitrite. By using a skimmer the conventional filter technique (sand filter, trickling filter, biological filter) may be laid out smaller. Investment (smaller filter), running costs (flushing water) and need space are minimized. The process water is pumped through the injector that takes air into the water model A have an air stone that takes air into the water and a static mixer for mixing. The air-water- mixture is injected at the lowest point of the skimmer into the rotation chamber. Here the system pressure is high to enable maximum gas change (oxygen input, carbon dioxide output). After a while the gas-water-mixture up flows the inner tube. There the organic loaded foam is created. A part of the bubbles goes downwards the main tube. In this tube the water stream downwards is as high as the velocity of the bubbles upwards. So the bubbles are caught for a long time - long contact time. At the bottom of the AquaCareFlotor the main tube enlarges to inhibit the bubble going out of the water outlet. The foam in the upper parts looses water and is pushed into the foam cup. With this system high amounts of organic loads will get out of process water. AquaCare is building flotation systems from m 3 /h. The smaller units are available with two different air bubbles producing systems: version V is built with a venturi, version A with air stones. The field of application is hobby size sea water aquaria and labs. 11 Ozone reactor OZR for big ponds and aquacuture systems OZR 250 Am Wiesenbusch 11 - D Gladbeck - Germany Tel.: Fax: info@aquacare.de 3 stage Ozone Reactor For fresh water fish ponds and pools AquaCare has developed an ozone reactor that puts ozone fast and efficient into the water. The dissolved ozone cracks biological persistent substances like Gelbstoffe and humic acids to realize their biological degradation the water gets crystal-clear. Nitrite is oxidized and is consequently not harmful for flora and fauna, especially in the start-up phase of a pond. The oxygen concentration is rising. The function of the AquaCare OZR 1. stage: in the upper section the feed water is mixed turbulently with ozone containing air. A small air should pump air through the ozone generator into the OZR. 2. stage: within the trickling section the water flows over trickling filter material that realizes a good transit of the ozone into the water. 3. stage: in the water filled section of the OZR the smallest bubbles will stay for a long time in the tube and dissolves more ozone. The outlet water may flow over an activated carbon filter to eliminate surplus ozone or may flow directly into the pool. With the second version the ORP should be controlled to avoid over concentrations that can harm organisms. Connection of the OZR at the water system The OZR has to be connected with a feed water with enough pressure / flow. A small air pump (option) presses the air through an ozone generator (option) into the OZR. To prevent back-flowing water into the ozone generation a check valve is connected. To prevent an overdosing of ozone it is possible to connect the ozone generator with an ORP-control. Another way to prevent overdosing is an activated carbon filter that is connected after the OZR. The diameter of the activated carbon filter must be minimum as large as the main tube of the OZR. 12 Ozone Destructor Am Wiesenbusch 11 - D Gladbeck - Germany Tel.: Fax: info@aquacare.de Advantages of the AquaCare Ozone Destructor The professional AquaCare ozone destructor is not only eliminating ozone from damp skimmer air, but has built in security U-pipes for exhaust air and ozone generator. The durable version is installed fast and permits simple maintenance without removing from fittings. The activated carbon bed consists of high-quality course activated carbon, which will not block even after long operating times and lowers the maintenance. The water level for the security U-pipes is fed automatically by condensation of the exhaust air, if the exhaust air temperature is higher than the ambient temperature. If the ambient temperature should be higher than those of the exhaust air, the built in float valve can be used for an automatic refilling. By automatic refilling no errors can occur because of lack of water. The security U-pipes for ozone and ozone containing exhaust air can be cleaned simply by inspection opening (e.g. with bottle brushes). All pressures in the U-pipes can be read off in mbar. Option: Sensor for Controlling For an accurate error message, e.g. for a PLC monitoring, up to four sensors can be mounted. The moving filter material ensures that old and useless bacteria films are washed out and the new highly active films retain in the filter. Therewith a constant and extreme high bio-degradation is realized. With air or oxygen aeration the efficiency may be raised. 14 Trickling Filter TKF Am Wiesenbusch 11 D Gladbeck Germany info@aquacare.de The trickling filter is one of the oldest filter techniques. The water is rinsing over the trickling material and is enriched with oxygen. Too much carbon dioxide is outgased. The TKF filter is made for different materials depending on the customer s wish: more surface or better long life without maintenance. The sizes with 400 mm diameter or larger are made of black PE. At the upper end a water dispersing system and at the bottom a grid are installed. Size, kind and position of AquaCare trickling filter TKF 500 and TKF 2000 the connectors are custom made. At very large models (more than about 2000 mm) is makes sense to install flanges to simplify transport and maintenance. For cold water systems insulated systems are possible. On the sulfur granules specialized autotrophic bacteria will grow, "eat" the sulphur and respire the nitrate. Organic substances are not necessary. The AquaCare ADN filter has a build in flushing system to prevent blocking the filter bed. The flushing is manually or automatically driven. Every time you can see the condition of the filter bed because the main tube is made of transparent PVC. The inlet water can sucked automatically (option) with an injector (venturi). The deaeration is made with the water outlet. This material consists of a porous matrix linked with active adsorber molecules. The phosphate polluted water flows through the adsorber bed and is cleaned. If you change the material the bounded phosphate is taken out of the aquarium. No phosphate pool is established. This material releases any color. The system works pressure-less with constant volume flows and needs low energy. The sieves are cleaned depending on the mass of dirt. The construction ensures a smooth incoming flow so that even fragile flocks are restrained. The AquaCare drum filters are suitable for fresh and sea water. Alle media touched materials are made of plastic to prevent corrosion. In build-in flushing pump is made of a very high grade stainless steel. The rotation speed dependes on the grade of dirt in the feed water and is controlled automatically. The restrained particles are flushed out with process water. 22 Professional Chalk-Reactor for producing soluble calcium and hydrogen carbonate Am Wiesenbusch 11 - D Gladbeck - Germany Tel.: Fax: info@aquacare.de Turbo Chalk Reactor size 8 with professional control (PLC) The Turbo Chalk Reactor The AquaCare Turbo Chalk Reactor is a further development of the traditional chalk reactors. The effectiveness was drastically increased. Due to the very high water flow inside the system any channels will uprise. If channels would occur the flow is lowering and the dissolving of the material will drastically decrease. The AquaCare reactor uses a special gravel, that have a very high dissolving capacity (see graphic) compared to other materials like corals gravels or calcite rubbles. The CO 2 supply is made without a ph-probe. The built in AquaCare control BasiTech is very reliable and you do not need to calibrate a probe or replace it after 1 to 2 years with size 8 or larger (smalle sizes on request) a professional mini-plc is installed. The CO 2 input is visible in the CO 2 tube and in a pass meter; you do not need an additional bubble counter that has to be filled regularly. In an air-driven neutralization tube the ph is raised up to ph 7.0 depending on the operation parameter. Compared to other conventional CO 2 reactors it implies that the AquaCare system contains up to 80% less free CO 2 in the outlet water. Consequently the risk of a green algae trouble is extremely reduced. The air input is shown with a flow meter. The water supply should be made with a strong pump with minimum 10 meters pressure or with the auxiliary pressure outlet of the AquaCare skimmer. Together with a pressure relief system and the water inlet valve with flow meter the internal pressure of the Turbo Chalk Reactor is established. The high internal pressure ensures extremely high dissolving rates. In the last step of the Turbo Chalk Reactor the calcium and hydrogen carbonate enriched and neutralized water flows through a particle filter. Sediments and too small become granules will be rejected. In the sediment step some phosphate is adsorbed by chemo-sorption, too. By the way the calcite bed must never be changed. 28 Structure of the system 3rd chamber: the multi-purpose chamber serves as a catch basin if the main pump of the aquarium is not in operation and emptying water will flow to the filter system. In this chamber enough space The Basic system consists of a large PE-tank with extreme stability - even earthquakes cannot induce cracks in the walls. The danger of growing old silicone seams of glass tanks is cancelled. 1st chamber: the inlet chamber takes the returning water from the aquarium. A fleece, that is easily washable, takes out the bigger particles and fibres. In this chamber you can install heaters and the whole measurement and control technology. 2nd chamber: the trickling filter respectively de-aerating chamber takes the water of the first chamber and additional the water coming back of the skimmer. All gas bubbles still in the water are flowing over the plastic trickling material and will go out of the water. Additional the trickling filter material will be settled by aerobic bacteria and protozoa. Depending on the water level of one tank the rotation of the pump is regulated with an phase angel control (1 phase) or frequency control (2 phases). The AquaCare level feedback control measures the water level of one tank and regulates the flowing-off pump continuously. You only must guarantee that the other pump has a little bit lower water flow (e.g. by throttling the flow with a ball valve). If the water level is rising the control 1. tank 1 e.g. aquarium; 2. tank 2 e.g. filter tank; 3. level switch for high level alarm;4. analogue level sensor; 5. pump (not regulated); 6. pump (regulated), 7. ball valve increases the rotation of the pump that more water is pumped out. If the water level sinks the pump begins to run with a lower rotation. To prevent the motor of the pump burning out the control shuts down the pump at too low rotation. If the regulated pump is shut down the control automatically tries to start the system again. A second safety step is the connection of two level switches. If one water level (filter tank or aquarium) is rising over the maximum level (e.g. failing of one pump) the AquaCare level feedback control shuts down the whole system. Fragile heater have to be protected against mechanical forces. Titanium and plastics are the main materials for heat exchangers used in sea water tanks. Titanium has a higher heat transfer coefficient and so the dimensions are smaller. The pressure losses of titanium exchangers are normally higher. Titanium is under suspicion to shed metal ions into the water. These ions may accumulated and hurt sensitive sea animals. Heat exchangers made of PE-RT are totally inert, that means that any substance will reach the water. Disadvantage is the lower heat transfer coefficient that causes larger dimensions of the units. Exchangers made of PE-RT (RT-plastics have a higher heat transfer coefficient that normal PE) are perfectly suitable for sea water tanks. Using natural sea water Natural sea water seems to be the best solution to give marine animals best water quality. But only a few aquarists are able to get natural sea water from the ocean. With artificial sea water the quality is better and more stable and lower quantities has to be stored. Making of artificial sea water To make artificial sea water you have to care some things, to get good sea water without irritating substances. Sea salt of good quality is easily dissolving in warm water. If white precipitations will occur at low temperatures or low CO 2 concentrations, aeration or a good current should eliminate these solid substances within some hours. 34 Sea water should be made in glass or plastic (poly ethylene PE, poly propylene PP, poly acrylic glass PMMA, or poly sterol PS) tanks. You should never use metal or weekender containing materials. Sea water is aggressive and is able to leach harmful substances out of false materials. The warmed water should have low concentrations of salt (low TDS or conductivity). The best way is reverse osmosis water or water conditioned with ion exchanger (mixed bed filter). If tap water is used many substances like fertilizers (nitrate, phosphate, silica acid) or rest concentrations of pesticides. These bad substances will promote blue green algae (cyano bacteria) or will damage sensitive animals. The Salinity of the fresh sea water should be controlled after one day. At 35 salinity sea water has a density of ρ 20 = 1,0245 kg/l, a specific weight of 1,0301 kg/kg (20 C), a refraction index of n 20 = 1,3393 and a electrical conductivity of κ 20 = 47,5 ms/cm or κ 25 = 53,9 ms/cm. For an exact measurement of all above values it is important that the composition of artificial sea water is nearly the same than natural sea water. Otherwise the measurement of low quality sea water will be false. Aquaristic conductivity meters should be controlled and calibrated at 35 every month. If you calibrate below 30 these instruments (twoelectrodes-technique or cell constants below 5/cm) will show 2-3 ms/cm less. Refilling of evaporated water The more light is over the aquarium the more water will evaporate. If you do not refill with pure water (R.O. water) the salinity will rise with the time. To refill the water you have to take water with very low salt content to prevent a changing in the salt components. Best way is a continuous refilling with an automatic refill system like the AquaCare BasiTech. If you refill manually pump the water slowly to the aquarium. Otherwise an osmotic shock will occur. Please check the salinity every month. If the salinity is to high take a little bit sea water out of the tank and refill it with R.O. water. If the salinity is too low, fill fresh sea water to the tank. The evaporation will rise the salinity. Cut of a AquaCare Aquarium AquaCare Mineral Salt Changing of water A regularly water change is very important. AquaCare recommends minimum 1% per month even if robust animals are kept. If you keep sensitive animals 5 to 25% water change is the best way. The quantity depends on the concentration of nitrate and phosphate of the aquarium water. The more fertilizing substances are in the water the higher the water change. Dosing of additives Even you use a sea salt of high quality some important substances will be used very fast by corals. The more light is mounted the faster the substances will decline. Dissolved chalk (hydrogen carbonate and calcium) should not be to low. Otherwise the ph value will oscillate very high and will hurt sensitive animals. The Carbonate hardness (KH) should never be below 7 dh, calcium not below 400 mg/l. If these factors will decrease - and in high productivity aquariums this will occur within 1-2 days - animals like Tridacna, hard corals, tube worms and algae like chalk algae or Halimedia have problems to survive. In a good working aquarium system with strong skimming trace elements, iodine, strontium and magnesium should be dosed, too, to prevent deficiency. The AquaCare Mineral Salt is used to harden up soft water, e.g. R.O. water. For soft water aquaria like Amazonian tanks a minimum of hardness is useful. With this Mineral Salt it is possible to bring hardness and important minerals into the very poor R.O. water. If you need higher degrees of hardness and a higher ph value you can dose more of the salt. Fishes of the East African sees like Tanganyika and Malawi has ideal conditions with the combination of R.O. water and AquaCare Mineral salt: the ph is over 7 and stable and additionally the salt concentration is higher. For sea water aquaria you can use the AquaCare Mineral Salt to bring minerals into the aquarium. If you use the solutions V1 (KH-plus) and V2 (Calcium-plus) in high amounts you can prevent the changing of the salt water composition if you use the Mineral Salt, too.
