1 TOWN OF FORT SMITH Employment Opportunity Water Plant Operator I The Town of Fort Smith has an opportunity for a full-time Water Plant Operator I position to assist with the operation and regular maintenance of the Water Treatment Plant, Water Distribution System, Wastewater Collection System and Wastewater Treatment Facility. The incumbent will be reporting to the Water Treatment Plant Supervisor. The qualifications include a Grade 12 or equivalent education. Level 1 Water Treatment Certification or related training would be an asset. Applicants must possess a valid Class 5 NT driver s license and air brake endorsement would be considered an asset. Salary & Benefits: Pay Level 15 - $60, to $68, per annum. The Town also provide a Northern Allowance of $7, annually, comprehensive health & dental benefits and a pension plan provided by Northern Employees Benefits Services. 2 Town of Fort Smith Job Description POSITION TITLE: DEPARTMENT: REPORTS TO: WATER PLANT OPERATOR I, II, III WATER PLANT WATER/ WATERWASTE MANAGER CLASSIFICATION: FULL TIME, PAY LEVEL 15 to 20 LOCATION: WATER TREATMENT PLANT Summary of Position Under the Water/ Wastewater Manager, the incumbent operates and maintains the Water Treatment Plant, Water distribution, Sanitary Waste Water distribution and Waste Treatment Lagoon system. Outline of Duties 1. Operation of Water Treatment Plant Taking necessary tests of water quality and adjusting that quality by addition of appropriate chemicals. Operates and maintains Water Treatment, Water Distribution, Wastewater collection system and Treatment Lagoon. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Water/ Wastewater Manager or senior staff member. 2. Operation, Repairs and Maintenance Perform repairs and maintenance on all related Water/ Wastewater equipment and infrastructure. Maintains and operates all Fire Hydrants and EMO standby systems. Assist in the operation and maintenance of the Water Treatment Plant Heating System as directed by the Water/ Wastewater Supervisor or senior staff member. 3. Operation and Maintenance of Water Truck Maintaining the scheduled service promptly and with courtesy. Ensuring that the Water Delivery truck is in good mechanical and clean operating condition. Reports condition of Water Delivery truck to the Water/ Wastewater Manager.

3 4. Responding to Complaints or Problems from Customers Regarding a variety of matters such as water quality, service delivery and scheduling as directed by the Water/ Wastewater Manager. 5. Connections and Disconnection of Water Performs regular service account connections and disconnections. Performing installation, maintenance and reading of meters as directed by the Water/ Wastewater Manager or senior staff member. 6. Carry out such other duties related to the position as may be assigned by Director of Municipal Services. Position Supervised This position is supervised by the Water/ Wastewater Manager and by senior staff members. Responsibilities Operates the Water Treatment Plant, taking the necessary tests of water quality and adjusting that quality by addition of appropriate chemicals, and monitoring water quality. Keeps the records of the entire operation of the Water Treatment Plant and passes that information on to the Water/ Wastewater Supervisor or senior staff member. Monitors the sewer lagoon, sewer lift stations, water intake pump house and water tower, and reports findings to the Water/ Wastewater Supervisor or senior staff member. Ensure that all these facilities are operating in good condition. Maintain and service all Fire Hydrants, EMO standby systems and ensuring all water distribution systems are operating efficiently for fire protection. Ensure that all chemicals used in the day to day operation are secured and accounted for at all times. Ensure that all town bylaws, Occupational Health and Safety policies, and all applicable sections of the Workers Compensation Board Regulation are followed. 4 Work Environment Work outdoors in extreme weather conditions Occasional verbal abuse from the public Handling chemicals Work around machinery, vehicles and equipment Working with staff and reporting to Water/ Wastewater Manager Knowledge, Education and Experience Formal Education and Training Completion of grade 12 or equivalent Class 5 NT Driver's license Air Brakes Endorsement Level I Operator Will be required to successfully complete the Water and Wastewater Treatment I Courts and Certificate, Chlorine Handlers Course and one (1) year of related work experienced. Level II Operator Will be required to successfully complete the Water Treatment II, Water Distribution II Wastewater collection I Certification, Hydrant Maintenance course and two (2) year of related work experienced. Level III Operator Will be required to successfully complete the Water Treatment III Certification, Management for Operators and four (4) year of related work experienced. All operators are required to obtain and maintain confined entry, first aid and safety awareness certificates. Experience The incumbent should have good communication skills, be able to deal effectively with staff and the general public and must be self-motivated. Basic computer literacy and familiarity with standard software packages such as and word processing software. Other Skills/ Knowledge Knowledge of Northwest Territories Water Act, NWT Health Act, Fort Smith Water License, Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines, Western Canada Water and Wastewater Standards.
