The Kia Oval & Sky Ocean Rescue What is it? Sky has launched an environmental campaign, Ocean Rescue, to educate people about marine conservation and the rising levels of plastic in our seas. As a Club we have developed a partnership and decided to set a target to become a single use plastic free venue by Why? Plastic makes up 95% of the rubbish in our oceans, mainly in the form of bags and food and drink containers. From past studies it is estimated that as many as 90% of the world's seabirds have plastic in their stomachs. Between 4.8 million and 2.7 million tons of plastic end up in the world's oceans every year and can be found everywhere from the Poles to the Equator, on coastlines, on the sea surface, and on the seafloor. With the equivalent of four rubbish truck s worth of plastic dumped in the ocean in the time it takes England or South Africa to bowl one over, Sky Ocean Rescue and the Kia Oval are working together to raise the issue of ocean health with cricket fans and ask them to make a few simple changes to help save our oceans. 3

The Kia Oval & Sky Ocean Rescue How? During the Test there we gave away 20,000 limited edition refillable water bottles and fans were encouraged to use the 20 free water points installed throughout the venue, in a move to significantly contribute to reducing the amount of single-use plastic consumed across the five days. After the successful launch during the Test match we teamed up with Aqua Pax water to supply mineral water to us for our customers to purchase. 208 and Beyond We are currently working hard to source new products from suppliers to help us achieve our single use plastic free goal. This is a challenging journey and we are proud to be leading the way. Sourcing new products has meant there have been cases where we are creating bespoke designs, because the product simply hasn t been invented yet! Below is just a small list of some of the products we are currently sourcing alternatives ready for 208: Plastic bottles- We are currently looking at Post mix machines and will be testing shortly. 5 Earth Day On Earth Day each year,we plan an event which helps to engage our team and look after the environment. Bee Cause We gave away 00 packets of sunflower seeds to staff to plant at home and help save Britain s bees, in support of the Friends of the Earth campaign The Bee Cause. Bees play an important role in hospitality. We need them to pollinate our fruit and vegetables, such as broccoli, squash, apples and almonds. The Kia Oval set up displays with information on the UK s current bee population and educated the team on how habitat loss, exposure to harmful pesticides and climate change are causing a decline, and that we can help save them by planting flowers rich in nectar. Litter Pick We organised an event to clear litter in a local park which is 00 metres from the Kia Oval. The park is used by locals for community events, dog walking and sports, including cricket They split into teams and competed to see who could pick up the most litter across the park. Our litter pickers expertly bagged every piece of rubbish they could see from plastic bottles to broken dog toys! Once they could find no more, they returned to the Kia Oval to recycle what they could, and warm up with a cup of tea! 5

Coffee Recycling Bio-bean is an award-winning clean technology company that has industrialised the process of turning waste coffee grounds into advanced biofuels and biochemicals. Bio-bean is an innovative, sustainable solution for the disposal of waste coffee grounds, providing the means to extract maximum value from a previously undervalued waste stream, whilst minismising environmental impact. Compared to alternative methods of WCG disposal, bio-bean offers significant commercial and environmental advantages at every scale. We produce tonnes of coffee waste a year, through Match days and our busy Conference and Events business! 7

Sustainable cup We use reusable eco-cups to replace the disposable plastic pint cups. Subject to a deposit, visitors can reuse their cups and then return it to get their deposit back, or they can take it home. This has saved 480,000 cups going to landfill each year and reduced litter at the venue. Just like the supermarkets that have implemented the elimination of disposable plastic bags, have introduced a similar future change of behaviour for reusable cups replacing disposable ones. 8

Food Waste We plan our menus carefully to avoid food wastage. If we do end up with any surplus food, we donate this through Plan Zheroes. Plan Zheroes is a social network, where relationships are built between food businesses and charities, communication is quick and simple and food reaches those in need, safely and conveniently. It also helps us track how much food we have donated through the year. There are charities as close as Vauxhall! ) When we have surplus food, log on upload what food we have available- we can also specify collection times. 2) Nearby charities receive a notification and can claim the food online. Volunteers and transporters in the local area get involved to help transport the food. 9

Food Sourcing Sustainable sourcing Our Head Chef and his team cook with fresh ingredients every day on-site. We write menus with seasonal produce in mind and actively promote the use of seasonal British produce. We support UK and Ireland agriculture through our Truly Local, regional and British sourcing activities. According to the New Economics Foundation, spending about 0 on local food schemes can generate almost 26 for the local economy. For example, at The Kia Oval, wherever possible we source in season fruit and vegetables from the UK. Throughout the year, 70% of our fruit and veg are sourced within the UK Fresh fish is supplied from Direct Seafoods, a sustainable source with provenance We only buy fish that comes from well managed marine sources and we do not use any fish on the Marine Conservation Society s (MCS) fish to avoid list All our pies are from award winning pie maker Piglets, who are known for their pies filled with locally sourced ingredients.
