Sustainable Development is defined by the Australian Government s National Strategy for Ecologically Sustainable Development as: using, conserving and enhancing the community s resources so that ecological processes, on which life depends, are maintained and the total quality of life, now and in the future, can be maintained. 3

Introduction GV Health is pleased to present the second edition of its Environmental Sustainability Report. In the last 12 months, GV Health has reviewed and reset the parameters for data Reporting, to now include the Graham Street, Shepparton campus, as well as the Tatura and Waranga campuses. This has resulted in a more accurate reflection of our environmental footprint across multiple campuses. Future reports will also include reference and data regarding other GV Health sites. GV Health is now better placed to be able to understand its resource use through improved reporting techniques and better data management. The achievements detailed in this report reflect the commitment GV Health has to improving operational efficiencies and reducing overall costs, whilst also improving the overall patient experience. 4

Sustainable energy: energy obtained from non-exhaustible resources CO 2 Carbon offset: a reduction in emissions of carbon dioxide or greenhouse gases. Waste management: activities and actions that manage waste from inception to final disposal. Water conservation: activities that manage fresh water as a sustainable resource. 5

Executive Summary GV Health acknowledges its environmental and community obligations and is committed to a proactive approach to ensuring a more sustainable environment for future generations. The Victorian Government has developed the Our Environment, Our Future Sustainability Action Statement and is committed to reducing environmental impacts across its operations. GV Health will advocate and develop initiatives that support this objective. GV Health s Environment Policy is linked to the organisations Strategic Plan and promotes environmentally sustainable workplace practices. The policy objectives include the implementation of waste and energy minimisation strategies and compliance with all legislation and regulations. With the introduction and maintenance of an effective Environmental Management Strategy GV Health will address potential adverse environmental impacts resulting from our activities and assess our environmental performance. 6

Energy Consumption Our new energy supplier is Momentum Energy, who are a Tasmanian based 100% Australian owned and operated company. Momentum Energy are part of Hydro Tasmania, Australia s leading clean energy business and is the largest generator of renewable energy in Australia, generating hydro and wind power. In the last 12 months there has been a reduction in energy consumption per patient treated by 5% and savings in energy costs of approximately $280,000. All new lighting installations must now be LED to reduce energy. Installed new Air Conditioning Chiller to improve general hospital cooling. ENERGY CONSUMPTION Total energy consumption by energy Wtype (GJ) 2011/ / / /15 Electricity 34,187 32,987 32,577 32,366 Natural gas and LPG 44,181 45,732 45,837 43,981 Diesel Total 78,368 78,719 78,523 76,347 Normalised energy consumption Energy per unit of floor space (GJ/ m2) Energy per unit of activity (GJ/activity)

Greenhouse Gas Emissions GV Health is working to mitigate its contribution to climate change by committing to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by: Raising awareness through staff education; Turning off lights and equipment when not in use; Introducing sensor lights in areas with limited access and use; Sourcing products with less packaging; Continuing to investigate any opportunities to improve our environmental footprint. GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS Total greenhouse gas emissions (tonnes CO2e) 2011/ / / /15 Scope 1 (= lpg+gas+diesel) 2, , , , Scope 2 (= energy+cogeneration) 11, , , , Total Greenhouse Gas Emissions 14, , , , Normalised greenhouse gas emissions Emissions per unit of floor space (kgco2e/m2) Emissions per unit of activity (kgco2e/activity)

Water Consumption GV Health have several water recycling programs in place which provide considerable savings for GV Health. Examples of the programs are 5 x 30,000 litre underground water tanks which collect storm water for use on the gardens and surrounds. GV Health will improve the data collection to achieve more accurate reporting of recycled water consumption. WATER CONSUMPTION Total water consumption by type (kl) 2011/ / / /15 Potable Water 93,112 86,322 99,149 93,513 Re-used / recycled water Total Water Consumption 93,112 86,322 99,149 93,513 Normalised water consumption Water per unit of floor space (kl/m2) Water per unit of activity (kl/activity) Water re-use and cycling Reuse / recycling rate (percentage) 0.00% 0.00% 0.00% 0.00% 10

Waste Generation GV Health has significant recycling practices that includes batteries, mobile phones, bones, cooking oil, printer cartridges and fluorescent tubes. GV Health introduced reusable KeepCups into the Glasshouse Cafe in May Annual expectations show a diversion of approximately 3,500 cups from landfill per year. GV Health also implemented issuing pay slips via , saving approximately 250kgs of paper waste each year. Improving our recycling practices has seen our diversion rate increase by 10%, as well as decreasing waste kgs per patient treated by 9.1%. WASTE GENERATION Total waste generation by type (kg) 2013/ /15 General waste 307, , Recycled waste 241, , Clinical waste 56, , Total Waste Generation 606, , Normalised waste generation General Waste per activity (kg/activity) Recycled waste per activity (kg/activity) Clinical waste per activity (kg/activity) Waste recycling Waste recycling rate (percentage) 26.41% 41.08% 11
