1 Steady progress in CST heating systems November 2014 Until November 2014 India had achieved little over to 32,000 m2 of concentrated solar thermal systems installation for process heat and other heating applications and several more are under installation. 2 To boost the use of Concentrating Solar Technologies, the Ministry is also implementing a new UNDP-GEF supported project on Market Development & Promotion of Solar Concentrator based Process Heat Applications in India. The objective of the project is to promote and commercialize Concentrating Solar Technologies for industrial process heat applications in India and facilitating the installation of 45,000 m2 of installed solar collector area by March 2017 through demonstration and replicated projects. Direct emission reduction from these projects during its 5 years period will be 39,200 tonnes of CO 2. Under the National Clean Energy Fund support for about 200 CSTs based systems of various capacities/sizes totaling to an approximate area of 1,00,000 m2 is anticipated during with an estimated cost of Rs. 195 crores. The installations will cover industries, hospitals, institutions and other buildings both private & public, requiring heat / steam for various applications including community cooking and space cooling etc.

3 ITC Ltd. Ranjangaon commissions solar heating system ITC Ltd. Tobacco Division, Ranjangaon near Pune has successfully commissioned a 442 m 2 nonimaging solar collectors supplied by Thermax Ltd. Non-Imaging Solar Collectors Set up at a cost of Rs. 80 lakh. They have also availed of central capital subsidy of 30%. There are 130 installed each 3.4 m 2 in size that will generate about 787,000 kcal (915 kwh) of daily heat. It will heat the water to 99 O C at 0.2 kg/cm 2 (g) pressure. The solar system will be integrated with existing boiler / heating arrangement which is currently heated through condensate recovery, heat recovery and steam. Solar fluid heating system for pre-heating of boiler feed water application Solar field circulation pump operation starts in the morning at specified time and is switched off at specified time in the evening. These pumps circulate water through solar collector. Water collects heat that is captured by solar collectors and transfers it to water in hot water storage tank thereby increasing its temperature. For pump safety interlocks such as low water level / high water level are incorporated in the control logic. When the tank temperature reaches to desired temperature ( C), water would be transferred to de-aerator /storage tank. As a support to the National Action Plan on Climate change, as well as its strategic endeavor of pursuing a low carbon growth path, ITC has taken proactive steps to steadily expand its renewable energy portfolio. Today over 40% of ITC s total energy consumption is from renewable sources, an important achievement considering the large manufacturing base of the company.

4 Reliance Power s 100 MW CSP project synchronized Rajasthan Sun Technique Energy, a subsidiary of Reliance Power recently successfully synchronised the Rs 2,100 crore 100 MW concentrated solar power (CSP) project at Jaisalmer, Rajasthan. The project has 25 per cent reserve margin to meet 25-year power purchase agreement obligations. It was awarded the project in December 2010, based on international competitive bidding conducted by Vidyut Vyapar Nigam (a subsidiary of NTPC) under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission of the Centre. The project is the largest investment undertaken by any private sector entity in CSP in India. It is financed through debt from multilateral agencies such as Asian Development Bank, Export- Import Bank of the United States, Financerings Maatschappu Voor Ontwikkelingslanden NV and Axis Bank. The technology used in the project is called compact linear Fresnel reflector (CFLR), which focuses the sun's heat onto a system of tubes through which water flows. The concentrated sunlight heats the water to superheated steam which is then used for running a power generator. The CFLR technology for the project was provided by Areva Solar, the US subsidiary of the France-based Areva. It had already received approval for carbon credits under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) registration will allow the project to generate and sell Certified Emission Reductions (CERs) internationally. These CERs translates into direct revenues for Reliance Power. Reliance Power has already got CDM registration for its super-critical technology based power projects. "This is the world's largest Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) project ever registered with the Clean Development Mechanism Executive Board (CDM - EB). Reliance Power's has the world's largest CDM registered capacity of more than 12,000 MW with a potential to generate 60 million Carbon Credits in the next 10 years," said a company statement. With this project, Reliance Power's generation capacity has increased to 5,285 MW, which includes 5,100 MW of thermal capacity and 185 MW of renewable energy-based capacity.

5 International Award to pioneering French Solar Municipality (Photo courtesy: Municipality of Montmelian) The City of Montmélian la Solaire in France received the 2014 SHC SOLAR AWARD from The International Energy Agency at the recently concluded SHC 2014 Conference and Exhibition held at Beijing. The French City has been a solar thermal pioneer for more than 30 years that has demonstrated the systematic community development of solar thermal systems in municipal and residential buildings. This town of 4,000 residents is firmly committed to the promotion and development of solar thermal. Nearly 1,500 m2 of solar thermal collectors are installed on buildings. Of this solar collector area, 56% are installed on municipality buildings and 44% on private buildings (multifamily houses specifically). And, a solar thermal feasibility study is executed for each new communal building project. The city of Montmélian la Solaire has always been in the forefront of the application of new solar technologies: solar heating for the city s swimming pool was installed in 1984, large-scale solar heating for the hospital was completed in 1991, solar air heating for the Inter-district gym hall installed in 2007, and the ambitious solar city quarter, Triangle Sud, which in 2018 will be the first solar district heating system in France with a solar fraction of 80%! The SHC SOLAR AWARD is given to an individual, company, or private/public institution that has shown outstanding leadership or achievements in the field of solar heating and cooling, and that supports the work of the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme. The cities of Bengaluru, Pune and Chandigarh also have the potential to showcase similar developments. They are in the forefront with high density of solar thermal installations and must take a motivation to promise for this prestigious award in future.
