WHERE GREEN JOBS GROW ON LAND AND WATER THE PORT OF COEYMANS P&M BRICK LLC

A GREEN FACILITY

HISTORY The property was formerly a brick manufacturing plant. The plant closed in December 2001 displacing approximately 100 employees. P&M Brick, LLC purchased the property on March 12, Originally, the intent was to reopen the plant and to continue manufacturing bricks. The capital investment necessary to make the plant viable proved too high, and the vision of a marine terminal was conceived. Over the past few years the focus has been on the restructuring of the site to meet this new vision. Completed projects include a high load dock, dredging of the river to a 32 foot depth and renovation of some of the existing buildings. An inlet channel of 300 Feet with 15 of depth was recently completed.

Improving Environment & The Economy By Using Water Transportation 1. Environmental Benefits 2.Putting People Back To Work 3.Increasing Town Tax Base 4.Recycling To Help Environment 5.Using Erie Canal

Advantages of Inland Barge Transportation Shipping by barge is more energy efficient is safer. causes little congestion produces little noise or air pollution has relatively small effects on land and community produces multiple benefits

(Much of the material presented here is based on the US Department of Transportation) Shipping by barge is more energy efficient. One ton of cargo for every gallon of fuel burned. Truck - 59 miles Train miles Barge miles These figures show that shallow draft water transportation is almost nine times more economical, thus more efficient, than trucks and over two and one half times more efficient than rail.

Mode Tons Units Total Barge Railcars Trucks To move the same amount of cargo transported by a standard tow (1 barge) would require 32 freight cars or 100 trucks. Think about the additional traffic and associated air pollution such congestion would bring to our already crowded land systems.

Death and Injury Rate by Mode Per billion ton-miles Mode Deaths Injuries Barge tows* Trucks** 0.84 NA Railroads**

produces little noise or air pollution Mode Hydrocarbons Carbon Monoxide Nitrogen Oxide Towboat Train Barges cause far less air pollution than trucks, and less, or comparable Truck amounts, than rail Exhaust emissions from barges.1017 cumulatively produce fewer emissions per ton-mile of freight carried than either rail or truck. Waterway operations are generally away from population centers so the pollutants barges emit are less intrusive than the other modes of transportation.
