4 WINDLINK : a full range of cable solutions POWER CABLES CONTROL CABLES Low-voltage loop These (up to 1kV) reliably transmit energy from the generator to the transformer, usually located at the base of the tower. They safely absorb torsion due to the nacelle s constant turning to face the wind, and can operate in exterior temperatures down to -40 C while resisting high temperatures (+90 C). They are also oil and abrasion-resistant. Nexans has been chosen as a strategic partner for Vestas. The insulation compounds we have developed can withstand at least 2,000 torsion cycles at -40 C, making them ideal for very cold climates. Flexible mediumvoltage To carry energy from the transformer in the nacelle to the bottom of the tower, Nexans provides a light, flexible and compact rubber cable, typically from 10 to 30 kv for larger wind turbines ( 2 MW). These 1 or 4-core have a cross-section of 95 mm 2 or larger, and can withstand three full twists in either direction. Nexans is providing flexible MV to Multibrid for Germany s first major offshore wind farm, Alpha Ventus near the North Sea island of Borkum, in addition to supplying Alstom Ecotècnia, WinWinD and Scanwind turbines. 120 C nacelle For linking generators to transformers positioned up in the nacelle in very large wind turbines, Nexans produces LV silicone that can endure the intense heat (120 C and above) generated by bundled in a confined area. Nexans supplies for Alstom s newest 3 MW turbine (Eco 100). Many manufacturers are turning to this configuration, which requires better heat performance to prevent premature cable aging. All are available in Low-Smoke Zero-Halogen (LSZH) versions. Low-voltage aluminum Although cross-sections are larger than 4-core stranded copper, singlecore aluminum weigh half as much as copper power. They are less expensive, and easier to handle and install in tall towers. Nexans aluminum plants on nearly every continent ensure that we can follow turbine manufacturers or Tier 1 suppliers into all markets. Nexans knowledge of aluminum connectors and components is an added strength. Aluminum perform well at -40 C temperatures, and are available in LSZH versions. Sensor and fieldbus Nexans Thermoplastic Modified (TPM) 2 to 5-core sensor measure wind speed, temperatures, and performance parameters, while 2-core fieldbus are used in parallel with energy to digitally control all electronic and mechanical devices. Originally developed for ships and the offshore industry, these compact require little space, while delivering signal transmission for remote control. Profibus A 2-core round cable which can deliver up to 12 Mbits/s for complex control purposes. Widely used in the automotive industry, Profibus have superior mechanical and dynamic properties, as well as fast connections. Nexans is today a member of the Profibus Association, developing with 14 other companies and connector manufacturers to create integrated systems with high interoperability. Control These flexible shielded contain 2 to 100 cores and carry both the energy (usually volts) and low frequency signals to control the motor drive or the generator for nacelle positioning and control of rotor speed. Nexans delivers to Escha the for Vestas systems to control the pitch of rotor blades. Our are designed to last for at least 20 years and more. Fiber-optic Nexans silica FO assure high data transmission capacity for monitoring and control. They also offer high Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) in energy-dense areas, while large cores (200 microns) make connectivity easier. Nexans sells pre-cut and pre-connectorized fiber to GE Wind and other important manufacturers in Europe for easy plug and play installation.

6 to improve wind turbine output and performance SPECIAL CABLES Low-voltage aluminium Sensor and fieldbus Profibus 180 C singlecore Siwo-Kul connection These flexible silicone-insulated singlecore are designed to carry high current in high temperatures, up to 180 C. They are used as output connections for Class H generators, and current converter cabinets. Nexans is supplying all major MV generator manufacturers worldwide involved in wind turbine technologies. ACCESSORIES AND EQUIPMENT Fiber-optic accessories Nexans produces a full range of waterproof and pressurized closures to protect, store and splice fibers. Small boxes have a handy cassette system, while larger modules use Nexans own FiberArt splicing frame to simplify and optimize fiber management. These modular boxes are solid, reliable and fully-protected against the elements. They are easy to install and service, and require virtually no maintenance. Medium-voltage connecting systems and kits For links between the MV switch, transformer and underground, Nexans quality EPDM screened connectors offer exceptional compactness and reliability and are safe when touched accidentally by maintenance personnel. Nexans is widely present in Germany (through Siemens) and accounts for 90% of the UK market. In China, Siemens and ABB are installing Nexans systems in Inner Mongolia. To optimize its logistics, Alstom Ecotècnia (Spain) has purchased Nexans prefabricated and pretested kits. Low-voltage connectors Able to withstand thermal cycling and tower vibration throughout a turbine s lifetime, our recommended systems use a metallic lug with a wraparound rubber sleeve. It offers water tightness and reliability for connections up to 3 kv. In Germany, Nexans (GPH) supplies thousands of connectors and sleeves to the leading OEMS. Ethernet switch for communication and monitoring This compact and rugged switch contains 3 fiber-optic SFP (Small Form Factor Pluggable) uplink ports and 8 copper ports to realize multiple applications via one fiber. It is able to supply connected devices like IP cameras, WLAN access points and IP telephones with PoE (Power over Internet), and comes with a copper cable diagnostic monitoring function. Nexans memory card allows non-it maintenance personnel to replace and reconfigure the switch quickly and inexpensively. This is mainly suited to offshore turbines. Control
