Sound & Marine Life Workgroup IAGC/OGP Joint Global HSE & Security Forum Thursday, 19 September 2013, Dubaï, UAE Isabelle Lambert, CGG

Current Members WesternGeco - P.Bidmead TGS - P.Seidel CGG - I.Lambert Geokinetics - F.Ducas ION - J.Cunkelman Dolphin - R.Bampton RXT - C.Hall FairfieldNodal - A.Rayner SeaBird - C.Finnigan PGS - M.Christiansen Polarcus - P.Fontana BGP -Z.Jixue Global - M.Lawrence New volunteers welcome! 2

Workgroup Objectives Proactively exchange and analyse information on sound and marine life stemming from regulatory, scientific or industry initiatives. Advocate the geophysical industry's position on the impact of operations on marine life. Provide a mechanism for interacting with external stakeholders (i.e. international regulatory groups and bodies, NGOs, other sound producers). 3

Workgroup Tasks Assist industry with the: exchange of technical information identification of best practices identification of emerging issues alignment of policies and practices where practicable Produce guidance where they are lacking or consistency is needed, addressing carefully operational issues. Interface with other industry activities that deal with related issues, e.g. OGP s SML TaskForce. 4

EAGE 2013 Highlights Workshop, Impact of Sound on Aquatic Life : can Marine Seismic Survive the Next Decade? Absence of pertinent and standard metrics measuring seismic underwater sound. ISO efforts underway. Contradictory presentations on effect of geophysical surveys on catch rates for fisheries in Norway. RPS study showing no displacement of harbour porpoises from their habitats during nearby seismic survey. JIP on SML Phase III will be a pull-through phase heavily investing in communications. WG s WhaleWatcher: acoustic detection of a fin whale Marine Vibrator JIP selected second vendor (after PGS) 5

Exchange & Analyse Information IAGC SML Workgroup telecon on April 12 Agreed on PAM Guidance Final Draft IAGC SML Workgroup telecon on June 4 Focus on aerial monitoring on the rise in Brazil OGP SML TF : face-to-face meeting in London, June 7 Discussing priorities IAGC Brazil Committee Meeting on September 6 Environmental licensing and associated monitoring & mitigations for marine life OGP SML TF : telecon on September 10 Talking Points & Public Rebuttals to e-ngos and media 6

PAM Guidance Objectives : Determine minimum performance criteria for PAM systems Comply with confidence with regulatory and/or client requirements Specifications : For survey planning stage Technical & operational requirements 7
