Which approaches have been validated, which theories of change have yet to be tested? What needs to be done differently? Promoting actions for drastic mitigation toward 2020 and beyond from Asia This side event will review recent efforts on national and regional levels in Asia that aim for drastic mitigation. Research results from IGES on the elements of ADP discussion will also be presented. Discussion topics will include the carbon budget concept, market mechanism, and REDD+. Forest carbon accounting system built in a pilot province of China with MRV This event will introduce a pilot project in Sichuan to inform the development of a robust national forest carbon accounting system for China. Speakers will present on the framework, forest change matrix and models of the system, and China s role and efforts toward MRV in China s forestry sector. Reducing Emissions from Agriculture while improving food security - what role for UNFCCC? Reducing emissions from agriculture is a contested topic in the negotiations. Based on an expert workshop in February, this event analyses the role of agricultural mitigation in the various UNFCCC mechanisms. We will discuss potential opportunities and risks for smallholders in developing countries. Connecting commodities to landscapes through public-privatecivic partnerships There is a disconnect between commodities and landscapes in the sense that landscapes provide no direct benefits to business while providing many of the long-term services to sustain productivity. We will discuss reasons why some businesses do engage at landscape scales. Ecosystem-based adaptation for smallholder farmers: what are the opportunities and constraints? The session will provide an overview of how ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) can help smallholder farmers adapt to climate change and explore the conditions needed to scale up EbA across agricultural landscapes. Speakers will include representatives from CI, UNEP and IKI, among others. Land use in a post-2020 agreement In a recent report prepared for the Nordic Council of Ministers (NOAK), Climate Focus and UNIQUE analyze the current status of the land-use sector under the UNFCCC and its Kyoto Protocol, and formulate options for how various incentives and systems could be harmonized under a future climate treaty. Climate adaptation and agriculture: Solutions to successful national adaptation plans Release of policy brief Planning climate adaptation in agriculture, a panel discussion of research, policy and finance needs as countries implement national adaptation planning processes. It builds upon a 10- country workshop held in November, with recommendations for national delegates and SBI. 1

2 Global Canopy Programme (GCP) Stimulating interim demand - critical for ensuring the effectiveness of REDD+ Given a global framework on climate change is unlikely to come into force until 2020, key stakeholders - developed, tropical forest countries and the private sector will come together to discuss ways in which appropriate incentives can be deployed to stimulate investment in REDD+ from University of Copenhagen Malawi Rheinische Friedrich- Wilhelms-Universität Bonn United Republic of Tanzania Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) National Wildlife Federation (NWF) United Nations of Youth Network (UNOY) Global Forest Coalition (GFC) Brighter Green, Inc. Humane Society International (HSI) Advancing Climate-Smart Agriculture in Africa To fast track early action on Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) and ensure food security and improved livelihoods for smallholder farmers, countries need to get ready for CSA, transform policies and strengthen institutions. Presenters will share progress on science, finance, policy and implementation. Successfully reducing land use emissions in developing countries Since the introduction of REDD+ on the UNFCCC agenda, several countries have successfully reduced their emissions from land use change. UCS and CI will share case studies of documented emissions reductions, identifying why they were successful and lessons for REDD+. Corporate commitments on deforestation and land-use emissions accounting frameworks Agricultural traders and food companies are taking increasingly sophisticated steps to avoid sourcing from recently deforested land, and measure their land-use emissions. Perspectives from the private sector and leading experts on accounting for emissions from the land sector will be presented. UNOY NIGERIA YOUTH MARK 2014 INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FORESTS(MARCH 21ST) AND CONTRIBUTE TO REDD+ In marking the 2014 International Day of Forests,UNOY members in various states of Nigeria contribute to the REDD+. The Youths planted over 200 trees in Lagos, organize educational fora in schools to promote conservation, sustainable management of forests and the enhancement of forest carbon stocks. Non-market based approaches to address the drivers of climate change and forest loss The side event will discuss the need to develop effective policies to address the most important drivers of climate change, forest loss and unsustainable agriculture. It will focus on unsustainable livestock production as a key driver of land use change and greenhouse gas emissions in general. Land Use and the ADP: Opportunities to Support Adaptation, Mitigation, and Social Goals Adaptation and mitigation efforts in the land use sector should support broader goals for humane, sustainable, and equitable food systems. Experts will discuss how the ADP can support a holistic approach to land use.
