43 February 1, 212 Revised April 23, 212 Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati 16 Gest Street Cincinnati, Ohio 4524 Attn: Re: Mr. Ali Bahar E: Report of Drilling Oversight and Environmental Monitoring Oakley Station at Center of Cincinnati Marburg Avenue and Disney Street Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio Terracon Project Number: N Dear Mr. Bahar: Terracon Consultants, Inc. (Terracon) is pleased to submit this letter report detailing the Drilling Oversight and Environmental Monitoring services conducted at the above-referenced site. Based on previous investigative work conducted at the site by Hull and Associates, Inc. (provided to Terracon by Mr. Steve Dragon of Vandercar Holdings), the chemical constituent benzo(a)pyrene, a polyaromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), was detected above potentially applicable or relevant standards at this site. As a result, Terracon recommended monitoring the breathing zone during proposed excavation activities and soil sample analysis if headspace monitoring (via a photoionization detector [PID]) indicated a potential concern. The environmental services consisted of observation and monitoring of total organic volatile compounds (TOVCs) in soil head space with a hand held monitor (Mimi Rae 3 PID) during the geotechnical drilling services conducted at the above-referenced site. Terracon was on site during geotechnical drilling activities only to visually observe and screen the auger spoils (cuttings), groundwater encountered during drilling, and to provide monitoring of ambient air (breathing zone) during work hours. If headspace readings of soil samples indicated elevated levels above background, a soil sample was collected, properly containerized, and submitted for analytical testing of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and PAHs. Mr. Jeremy Hatfield and Mr. Jason Gill, environmental technicians with Terracon, observed the drilling activities in November and December 211. They field screened the drill cuttings and soil samples collected during the drilling activities for borings 1 through 9. Based on observation and monitoring of TOVCs with the PID, no elevated organic vapor readings above background were noted during the drilling activities, with the exception of borings B-1 and B-6. Headspace screening indicated elevated levels of TOVCs in two of the soil samples screened from borings B-1 and B-6 in the area where the proposed tunnel will be Terracon Consultants, Inc. 611 Lunken Park Drive. 44 MSDGC Marburg Avenue Cincinnati Ohio Revised April 24, 212 (February 1, 212) Project No. N constructed. These two soil samples (B-1 at feet below ground surface and B ft bgs) were submitted for analytical testing of VOCs and PAHs (laboratory report attached). The results of the analytical testing indicated no chemical concentrations above the laboratory method detection limits except for acetone at 7.7 parts per billions at a depth of ft bgs. Terracon considers the presence of acetone in this sample a lab artifact. Based on the field screening and the limited analytical testing, it is Terracon s opinion that further investigation is not warranted at this time. We appreciate the opportunity to provide these environmental services to the MSDGC. If you have any questions, please contact us at your convenience. Respectfully submitted, Kevin P. Reid, P.G.
