GUIDING PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN ATTRIBUTES FOR HIGH ACHIEVING SCHOOLS 1. LEARNER CENTERED ENVIRONMENT - Students learning is at the heart of the school. 2. PERSONALIZED ENVIRONMENT - Each Student is known well and cherished by adults and other students in the school. 3. PROGRAM ADAPTABILITY - The schools programs are tailored to individual student needs and talents and make use of a variety of learning tools. 4. COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS - The community is involved, informed and visible in promoting a rigorous academic learning environment, and in encouraging student use of community resources. 5. AESTHETICS - The school is appealing, warm, and inviting to all, and reflects the school s values and focus. 6. SAFETY - Students are safe and cared for in all the important aspects of their lives. 7. COLLABORATION - Everyone associated with the school works collaboratively to realize the school s hopes for students. 8. SUSTAINABILITY - Create schools that encourage a culture of conservation and environmentally responsible behaviors by combining learning with sustainability.

Sustainable Systems: What Can We Do? ECO-CHARRETTE Trees and Native Plants Preserve existing significant trees. Specify native and low water use plantings Rebuild existing damaged soil with compost amendments Roofscape Energy Star labeled cool roof materials Green Roof Skylights Water Use Reduction Rainwater harvesting Water efficient plumbing fixtures Graywater re-use for irrigation and other non-potable uses (i.e. flushing toilets) Off-Site Waste Reduction On-site composting Compostable trays and utensils at lunch Recycle building materials onsite during construction

Sustainable Systems: What Can We Do? ECO-CHARRETTE Building Envelope Increased R-value of roof and wall insulation Natural daylight throughout with sun shading devices Access to views to connect indoor spaces to the outdoor environment Site Generated Power Photovoltaic panels Wind power PSE grants Thermal Comfort Geothermal system with ground source heat pump Radiant flooring Natural ventilation through operable windows High Efficiency Lighting and Systems Control LED light fixtures Daylight-responsive lighting controls Automated energy management system

SITE ANALYSIS Where can we build? Consider circulation of students at different times of the day Consider vehicular access for deliveries and services Consider safety issues Preserve the historic character of the school Consider local access to the addition Consider diverse use of the addition

SITE ANALYSIS Where can we build? Vehicular circulation Preserve vehicle and pedestrian access points access, including service assess

SITE ANALYSIS Where can we build? Vehicular circulation Preserve vehicle and pedestrian access points access, including service assess Not on existing field, preserve the field of dreams playfield

SITE ANALYSIS Where can we build? Vehicular circulation Preserve vehicle and pedestrian access points access, including service assess Not on existing field, preserve the field of dreams Gym BR Existing building Play area Existing school building is landmarked Gym will remain in existing condition Boiler Room will remain in existing condition Play area to remain Playfield

SITE ANALYSIS Where can we build? Vehicular circulation Preserve vehicle and pedestrian access points access, including service assess Not on existing field, preserve the field of dreams Gym BR Existing building Play area Existing school building is landmarked Gym will remain in existing condition Boiler Room will remain in existing condition Playfield Covered Play potentially relocate to use that area of the site

SITE ANALYSIS Where can we build? Vehicular circulation Preserve vehicle and pedestrian access points access, including service assess Not on existing field, preserve the field of dreams Gym BR Existing building Play area Existing school building is landmarked Gym will remain in existing condition Boiler Room will remain in existing condition Playfield Covered Play potentially relocate to use that area of the site The portables potentially can move or be removed Existing trees -???

SITE ANALYSIS Where can we build? Vehicular circulation Preserve vehicle and pedestrian access points access, including service assess Not on existing field, preserve the field of dreams Gym BR Existing building Play area Existing school building is landmarked Gym will remain in existing condition Boiler Room will remain in existing condition Playfield Covered Play potentially relocate to use that area of the site The portables potentially can move or be removed Existing trees -??? 10 Set back from property line

SITE ANALYSIS Where can we build? Buildable Area Vehicular circulation Buildable area given the existing conditions: Preserve vehicle and pedestrian access points access, including service assess Not on existing field, preserve the field of dreams Gym BR Existing building Play area Existing school building is landmarked Gym will remain in existing condition Boiler Room will remain in existing condition Covered Play potentially relocate to use that area of the site The portables potentially can move or be removed Playfield Existing trees -??? 10 Set back from property line
