POLLUTION PREVENTION Eliminated 1.5MM LBS of PHOSPHATES/YEAR from detergents Eliminated 104,000 LBS EDTA/YEAR from Laundry Builder formulations Replaced 100,000 LBS PETROLIUM SOLVENTS/ YEAR with Soy based product With our TRUpath technology, we estimate to eliminate 8 MM Lbs./Year of Sodium Hydroxide from use. Remove 340 Bulk Tankers from the Public Highways 6

GM Toledo Machining & Assembly 4,500 transmissions per day Transmission Models 6 Speed RWD and FWD 8 Speed RWD New 9 Speed FWD New 10 Speed RWD 2.85 million square feet 2,000 employees 156 acres

Achieving The New Normal A paradigm is a multitude of habits that are lodged in your subconscious mind, and the culture of a company or institution. Change the paradigm in the same way it was created through repetition of information. Paradigm Shift a fundamental change in approach or underlying assumptions. Easy Shifts Changes that save money Changes that add PR value Not So Easy Shifts Shifts that add value to your employees and the community

Environmental Management System Framework to achieve Encouraging Environmental Excellence Follows ISO14001 Standard AND is integrated into GM s Global Manufacturing System (GMS) Speak the same language as the rest of the plant! Objectives & Targets Monitoring and Measuring Corrective Action Continuous Improvement Workplace Organization Visual Controls Task Instruction Sheets

Visual controls and standardization make recycling easier. Written Instructions help to train people on what to do.

Renewable Energy Solar, Wind & Landfill Gas Landfill Gas used by Powerhouse boilers since 1996 discontinued MW Rooftop Solar Array completed in 2013 Purchase Power Agreement $1,000,000 savings over 20 years Annual CO2e reduction of approx. 1,300 metric tons (Carbon Dioxide Equivalent)

Renewable Energy Solar, Wind & Landfill Gas Northwest Ohio Wind Project Work completed Oct Purchase Power Agreement Will supply the remainder of GM Toledo s electrical demand GE 2.5/116 wind turbines GM Toledo will be powered by 100% renewable energy by the end of 2018!

Energy & Water Conservation Energy Conservation Engineer develops projects and procedures for energy and water reduction Weekend shutdown procedures Automated Energy Management System More efficient lighting T8 fluorescent & LED VFD motors on fans and pumps Shutdown of Powerhouse boilers two 75 MMBtu/hr and one 70 MMBtu/hr units that generated steam

Economic Benefits 39% reduction in MWh/transmission in 2017 compared to 2010 baseline due to continuous improvement initiatives 18% reduction in M 3 of water/transmission in 2017 compared to 2010 baseline Consumers are increasingly choosing brands that have a reputation for environmental stewardship and positive social impact. Publicize your efforts both internally and externally!

GM Toledo is Landfill Free! 92% Recycled 2018 YTD 8% Waste to Energy Plant Trash & Hazardous/Universal Waste Organics Diversion (Composting) Potential to increase recycling rate to 97% Program fully implemented in 2017, requires efforts for continuous improvement. Increasing employee awareness of compostable material Andre Farms EPA approved Class 3 compost facility Working with in plant food provider (Subway) to use bio degradable food containers and utensils

What can and can t be composted can be very confusing. Employees need to be repeatedly presented with information until the correct result is achieved. Visual aids and training help to increase employee awareness.

Waste Reduction Efforts Sorbits Washable Absorbents Implemented washable absorbent program in January Reduction of 18,191 lbs of waste YTD. Waste Per Unit Tracking Communicate waste per unit generated to top management monthly, with a goal of reducing total waste. Utilize meetings with management to identify improvement opportunities kg/unit kg/unit 2018 YTD

Being Proactive Products & Supply Chain Chemical approval process that evaluates waste potential. Product and equipment design specifications Disallow the use of certain materials Incorporate energy efficiency Packaging Develop specifications that require packaging to be returnable and fully recyclable. Contains plastic recycling number Easy to breakdown

Green Infrastructure Bio Swales are low cost and low maintenance but provide many benefits. GM Toledo has four bio swales Reduces stormwater and sediment run off Native plants provide food and cover Even No Mow zones can minimize stormwater impacts Use signs and trim the edges

Community and Region Organizations, schools, etc. are always looking for help. Define your desired impact Oak Openings Region Habitat, Pollinator support through Wildlife Habitat program, GM GREEN STEM with local schools, Blue Green Algae problem, and educating the community. Rewarding but it takes some work, so focus on a few and develop your materials and methods to use over and over. Remember that your employees are part of the community!

GM Toledo Adopted a Natural Area at The Nature Conservancy s Kitty Todd Nature Preserve two events every year Partnering with one group saves time spent organizing Communicate externally and internally Educate while you communicate Green Ribbon Initiative to restore and preserve the Oak Openings Habitat

Your Employees Most of them care about what your company is doing to preserve and protect the environment. Get them involved, educated and give them the tools to do their job sustainably. Planting native plants at work and at home Bringing in Milkweed seeds for distribution Suggestion programs Recognition

GM GREEN STEM Three Spring events with local elementary schools. Kids rotate through stations to conduct water quality testing, learn about composting, pollinators and renewable energy. Make things easy by making a tool kit to use every year. Make tri fold education boards for each station. Use water testing kits. Renewable energy kit is a big hit with the kids.

Sometimes the effect on the community is intangible and sometimes it isn t.
