3 UN Secretary-General Calls on UNESCO to Establish Scientific Advisory Board UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced on the first day of the UN General Assembly (24 September) to create a Scientific Advisory Board to inform the debate on sustainable development. The announcement was made during the inaugural meeting of the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, a platform created to realize the vision adopted at Rio +20. Secretary General entrusted UNESCO to establish the UN Scientific Advisory Board, specifically focused on how science can contribute to sustainable development.

6 The Future We Want The world is currently debating over a new post 2015 sustainable development goal to replace the millennium development goals (MDGs) to give high prominence to greener growth. The exercise is a follow up to Rio+20 which called for establishing a new sustainable development global order built around economic growth, the environment and social inclusion. The 53-page outcome document, The Future We Want, adopted at Rio+20 aims to lay the groundwork for a green economy and replace the MDGs which expire in UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon called the outcome document a blueprint for making the world a brighter, safer place.

9 Energy at UNESCO UNESCO puts emphasis on addressing capacity building and sharing of best practices in renewable and alternative energy in support of sustainable development, and on providing policy advice, especially in developing countries. This is facilitated by UNESCO Chairs Programme involving twelve established Chairs on Renewable Energy and International Sustainable Energy Development Centre - ISEDC - established in Moscow as a Category 2 Centre placed under the auspices of UNESCO.

10 ESD and Energy Efficiency Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) requires participatory teaching and learning methods that motivate and empower learners to change their behaviour and take action for sustainable development. ESD promotes competencies like critical thinking, imagining future scenarios and making decisions in a collaborative way all of which are skills required for enabling access to sustainable sources of energy for all. UNESCO is the lead agency for the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development ( ). ESD can encourage sustainable consumption- Energy efficiency is a big part of sustainable consumption and is reflected by way of carbon footprints and energy efficiency rating systems.

11 Some best practices relevant to ESD and energy efficiency from around the world UNESCOs Eco-Schools programme: over 11.7 million students engaged in 52 countries as and works to empower students to be the change our sustainable world needs by engaging them in fun, action-oriented learning. The relevance and efficiency of their energy-saving programmes are outstanding: in England, a 20% reduction in CO2 over the last three years, in Australia energy savings for up to 71%. The global average is around 8-10%. Centre for Environment Education (CEE) in India has run the campaign CO2 Pick Right on climate change and individual lifestyle choices in over 70,000 schools in India. The programme made it possible to raise awareness on the importance of choices and daily practices for sustainability.

12 Some Examples In China, UNESCOs initiative with Bejing Academy of Education Sciences and Chinese Ministry of Education Environment, Population and Sustainable Development for Education (EPDESD) seeks to demonstrate the role of education in facilitating sustainable development; to build young people s scientific knowledge; to teach students more about energy conservation, to expand the construction of energy-efficient and emission-reducing schools; and to engage students in activities that mitigate social, economic, environmental and cultural problems for sustainable development. In South Africa youth are trained in the green industries and green innovation by promoting green career and business in the vocational opportunities. The scope of green retrofitting includes installation of photovoltaic technology, solar geyser, water harvesting, low energy lighting and cooling systems among other built environment adjustments to meet international compliance standards. In the United States, Universities are joining forces with NGOs to educate staff and students about the importance of energy efficiency and are instituting new, sustainable practices on campuses across the country.

13 Global Renewable Energy Education and Training (GREET) UNESCO GREET Programme fosters capacity building, in particular in Africa. It also promotes cooperation between countries of the North and South with support from UNESCOsponsored centers and institutes. UNESCO is a member of UN-Energy and contributes to UN energy policy coordination and related activities.

14 RENFORUS Initiative - Renewable Energy Futures for UNESCO Sites To provide global climate change field observatory sites involving sustainable use of environmentally sound renewable energy sources in UNESCO Sites (Biosphere reserves and World Heritage Sites). To promote good practice case studies, namely projects that have demonstrated positive results in the fields of renewable energy and energy efficiency and have the potential to be replicated.

15 RENFORUS Initiative - Renewable Energy Futures for UNESCO Sites This initiative aims to promote energy efficiency and the use of renewable energy in a selected number of UNESCO sites that could serve as global climate change field observatories as well as models of Sustainable Energy Communities..

16 UNESCO Sites and Renewable Energies Sites of excellence to foster the integration of renewable energies Biosphere reserves are sites established under UNESCO's Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme to promote sustainable development based on local community efforts and sound science. Model for testing and demonstrating innovative approaches to sustainable development from local to international scale. The World Network of Biosphere Reserves consists of a dynamic and interactive network made up of 610 biosphere reserves in 117 countries, including 12 trans-boundary sites.

18 World Natural Heritage Sites WORLD HERITAGE LIST INCLUDES 962 PROPERTIES FORMING PART OF THE CULTURAL AND NATURAL HERITAGE THAT THE WORLD HERITAGE COMMITTEE CONSIDERS AS HAVING OUTSTANDING UNIVERSAL VALUE.

19 Energy at the core of biodiversity and ecosystem services at UNESCO Sites Energy system plays a key role in providing the resident communities and the whole existing infrastructure with basic energy services in UNESCO Sites. Thus, the wide use and application of local renewable energy sources will help to reduce the damage caused to the ecosystem by energy production, while contributing to the sustainable development of local communities through access to energy services.

21 Women as solar power entrepreneurs: pilot project in the Sunderbans The Sunderbans is a part of the world s largest delta formed by the rivers Ganga, Brahmaputra, and Meghna. Women as solar power entrepreneurs: pilot project in the Sunderbans has endeavored to create viable enterprises on the supply side targeting women entrepreneurs. These enterprises have been created not only to provide SPV-based services in remote and interior villages, but also to provide repair and maintenance services to already existing products and systems. This pilot project, implemented by TERI in partnership with the RKM (Ramakrishna Mission) has also created an organizational set up viz. MFEDO (Market Facilitating and Enterprise Development Organization) within the cluster organization Kalpataru of the RKM to incubate these enterprises.
