CASE STUDY: Gulf Drilling International Ltd BACKGROUND Emergency shower and eyewash units are indispensable onboard offshore drilling rigs as a precautionary safety measure. Several of these rigs operate in areas such as the North Sea and the Middle East, where harsh climates of extremely low or high temperatures are expected all year round. In cold climates, heat is required to prevent freezing of the water, whereas in hot climates, the heated up water in the water tank and pipes require cooling to prevent aggravating the injuries on personnel using the emergency units. SOLUTION ISSUE GDI recently consulted Leeden Safety with regards to their emergency shower and eyewash units onboard a new rig that would soon commission a drilling project in the Middle East. With ambient temperatures expected to reach a high of 55 C, there was a risk of the water heating up to temperatures unsafe for personnel using the emergency shower and eyewash units. An onsite assessment of the situation also found potential issues with the water delivery (supply pressure) to the shower unit located on the monkey board about 30 feet above. In order to mitigate the hot water risk, Leeden Safety partnered with HAWS to offer a tempered water delivery solution. This skid mounted custom engineered design-and-build system HAWS model 8780 system comprises of a built-in water chiller, a water storage tank, and a water booster pump. The system meets stringent ATEX standards which enable it to be installed on the rig floor. The unit was delivered in the 3 rd Quarter of 2014 to KFELS for installation on the Gulf Drilling rig. In addition to GDI, the HAWS tempered water system has been installed for many other clients who frequently operate in environments of extreme temperatures around the world. These clients include ExxonMobil, SABIC, Chevron and DuPont.
