Chemical Reactions Lab Please remember, this power point is posted online

Chemical Reactions Lab This lab will be a partial formal write up, the data table and conclusion will be HIGH Priority! You may use the instruction packet to fill in (for example the title, data table. You MUST write or type your conclusion and attach it to the instruction packet.

Lab Group Jobs Once in your group - Decide who will do what: 1 person to record procedures information/steps 1 person gets chemicals from Mrs. Thomas 1 person double checks procedure, quantities, etc. I person records data and observations EVERYONE cleans and gets lab prepared for the next class!!

(Title) Chemical Reactions Lab Purpose: To investigate whether a chemical reaction takes place when certain substances are combined. Materials: goggles graduated cylinder beaker thermometer Gloves plastic cups stirrers water (H 2 O) sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO 3 ) citric acid (C 6 H 8 O 7 ) calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ) Copper (II) sulfate (CuO 4 S) Ammonia (NH 3 ) apron (optional)

Qualitative vs. Quantitative data! Quantitative data is??? Qualitative is??

CHEMICAL REACTIONS LAB Procedure for Experiment 1: 1. Measure out 50mL of water using a graduated cylinder and pour into a plastic cup. 2. Hold the cup and place a thermometer in it. Using a thermometer, measure the temperature of the water and record the temperature on your data sheet. 3. Get from Mrs. Thomas: Add 5 ml of calcium chloride and 5 ml of sodium bicarbonate to the water and stir carefully three times. 4. Place the thermometer back in the cup (hold it, it will be top heavy!) and record any temperature changes. This step will take a few minutes, you must wait for the thermometer to register the temperature changing. 5. Make observations and record any changes that occur. Make sure to record qualitative and quantitative data (descriptive words, pictures and record information in your data table)

CHEMICAL REACTIONS LAB Procedure for Experiment 2: 1. Measure out 50mL of water using a graduated cylinder and pour into a plastic cup. 2. Using a thermometer, measure the temperature of the water and record the temperature in your data table. Remember to hold the thermometer, it might be top heavy. 3. Get from Mrs. Thomas: Add 5mL of calcium chloride and 5 ml of citric acid to the water and stir carefully three times. 4. Place the thermometer back in the cup and record any temperature changes. Also, wait to watch for temperatures changes it is NOT instant!! 5. Make observations and record any changes that occur. Make sure to record data, write down descriptive words to describe what occurs and record data in your table.

CHEMICAL REACTIONS LAB Procedure for Experiment 3: 1. Measure out 50mL of water using a graduated cylinder and pour into a plastic cup. 2. Using a thermometer, measure the temperature of the water and record the temperature on your data sheet. 3. Get from Mrs. Thomas: Add 5mL of sodium bicarbonate and 5 ml of citric acid to the water and stir carefully three times. 4. Place the thermometer back in the cup and record any temperature changes. Wait for the temperature to change!! 5. Make observations and record any changes that occur.

CHEMICAL REACTIONS LAB Procedure for Experiment 4: 1. Come up to the front counter and Mrs. Thomas will measure out 5mL of copper II sulfate using a graduated cylinder and pour into the SMALLEST plastic cup (or test tube). 2. NO temperature for this experiment. 3. Use the pipette dropper to add 15 drops of ammonia DO NOT stir! 4. Make observations and record any changes that occur. Make sure to take pictures!!

CHEMICAL REACTIONS LAB Clean up: 1. Clean up your work area. 2. Rinse your plastic cups, thermometer, and stirrers in the sink and wipe dry with a paper towel. 3. Dispose of the used paper towels in the trash can. 4. Place damp supplies such as cups and beakers upside down on a sheets of paper towel to drain at your lab station. Look for signs to see where to place items on the back counter. 5. Wipe down your table with a damp cloth.

CHEMICAL REACTIONS LAB The lab should look like this when you are done!!

CHEMICAL REACTIONS LAB Report Make sure to collect data from your team member that recorded it. If pictures were taken, make sure those are shared as well. What is group work and what is independent? Your lab data is what you worked on as a group. The post lab questions and the conclusion is YOUR PERSONAL INTERPRETATION of what occurred during the lab.

Conclusion Tips: Remember, you have a page from the first unit to help you with writing conclusions Each experiment (there are 4) needs a paragraph written about it. You are expected to spend time and write a well thought out and thoroughly communicated explanation of this lab! Turn in the entire lab packet, with your conclusion stapled to the back to earn full credit.
