Water Purification for Small Villages Jaeweon Cho Yonsei University

<The Problems of unsafe drinking water> 1. There are many places in the world where safe drinking waters are lack, especially Africa and South Asia - One child dies or lose eyesight every 7 seconds because of unsafe drinking water 2. There are many villages which suffer from Dirty Drinking Water - Even with Wells, the Wells are Contaminated with Arsenics, Mercury, Pathogens, and Others - No Purification Facility; No Electricity for Isolated Villages <Contaminated water> <Potential consequences>

<Siem Reap, Cambodia> In 2006, GIST visited Siem Reap, Cambodia, and decided to provide Water Purification System that make safe drinking water. <Water Purification System for Cambodia> -starting- OngDalSaem Project

What is the OngDalSaem Project? It is the project that donates water purification system for people who suffer from seriously contaminated waters, in South-East Asia and Africa. OngDalSaem, in Korean, is a fountain which produce clean water in normally forest. OngDalSaem Objectives GIST wants to Make and Send Efficient Water Purification System to Where Safe Drinking Water is Lack of ; Especially Where Children are Suffering - The System Should Have Simple Structures for Residents to be able to Easily Use(it has to be operated even by Children) - The System has to Effectively Remove Contaminants - The System must be Maintained without Severe Problems OngDalSaem May Inform - Korea now has Capacity to contribute for the World - Korea has High Technologies with Water Purification

Since the Cambodia Project, we have received many calls and letters that asked us to provide OngDalSaem, - Kenya, suffering from Mercury and Nitrate - South Sudan, in Africa, suffering from Pathogens <Water qualities of wells in Kenya> Shallow hand-dug well Deep Borehole Kenya standard Nitrate (mg-n/l) Chloride (mg/l) Mercury (µg/l) Up to Now, 16 OngDalSaem have been sent

1 2 3 Siem Reap, Cambodia (to Solve their turbid Waters and Potential Pathogens), 2006 Korr village, Kenya (suffering from Mercury and Nitrate Contaminants), 2008 Agangrial village, South Sudan (to solve Pathogens problem), Haiti, Disaster Areas, Anjang Province, Vietnam (suffering from Arsenic contamination), 2010 Mongol where residents have difficulties of high Hardness (calcium), 2010

Characteristics of the OngDalSaem 1 It is Simple in Structure, thus, virtually no troubles 2 It is Easy to Operate - Even Without Electricity, Even by Children 3 It is Easy to Maintain - Membrane may be replaced Every 2~3 years - Easy to replace Pre-Filter 4 It is Versatile to effectively remove many contaminants, using different engineering

How it looks? Out Clean water NF membrane(4) Manual pump (3) Permeate Retentate Treated (5) Recirculation In Dirty water Pumping handle MF membrane Influent(1) (2) (Pre-filter)

Dirty Water Treated Clean Water Micro-Filter for pretreatment Membrane Modules Hand Rotating Pump

How Does OngDalSaem Work? STRUCTURE (SIMPLE AND EFFICIENT) Pre-Filter Hand Operating Pump Membrane

Specifications of the OngDalSaem Size & Weight - Approximate 1.5 m height, 1.0 width - Approximate 30~40 kg Capacity of Water Production -May produce 2~3 tons (Nano) and 5~10 tons (Micro) of Safe Drinking Water - May provide waters for about 100~200 residents by Nano and more than 1,000 residents by Micro - May produce about 2 liters (Nano) and 10 liters (Micro) per one minute Operating Conditions and Costs - With 1~3 bars pressures, only by hands, without any electricity - About 3 Million Wons for Facility, 300,000 Wons for Shipping

Versatile Types and Capabilities of OngDalSaem Types of OngDalSaem OngDalSaem Nano OngDalSaem - To Remove Dissolved and Little Contaminants, such as Heavy Metals and Toxic Ions Micro OngDalSaem - To Remove relatively Large Contaminants, such as Pathogens, Colloids/Particles Nano/Micro OngDalSaem Can Achieve - Higher than 99.9% Removal of Pathogens - Higher than 99% Removal of Turbidity Nano OngDalSaem Can Achieve - About 90% Removal of Nitrate and Organics (BOD, COD) - About 70% Removal of Heavy Metals and Arsenics

Replies from the Sites From Mongol (Monk KyungSan) -Residents can drink water free of hardness (calcium) -They had a ceremony with the OngDalSaem with the residents From Agangrial Village, South Sudan (Catholic Father Lee and Han) - Children can now drink safe drinking water; safe from pathogens, suspended solids, calcium - Very easy to use even by children - Residents tell they feel good with stomach From Anjang Province, Vietnam (a Professor of Cantho University) - Residents feel comfortable, without turbid color, after using the OngDalSaem - Arsenics can be effectively removed from the waters
