The second part of the mix is a generally constant electrical load or a Power Purchase Agreement. 5 Flexible, Efficient Configurations An Elliott back pressure turbine-generator unit can often be added in place of a pressure reduction valve in an existing steam system. The back pressure turbine can use as little as 5% of the available thermal energy to generate electrical power, with up to 95% of the energy remaining available for process requirements. After the turbine converts thermal energy from the high-pressure steam system into mechanical energy to drive the generator, the exhaust steam is then used for plant steam or industrial processes. Depending upon steam conditions, a backpressure turbine-generator can produce electricity with little increase in fuel consumption and no affect on downstream processes. Elliott provides high-efficiency condensing steam-turbine generators for applications where there is no demand for low pressure steam. Extraction /condensing turbinegenerator sets are available when the demand for lower pressure steam is variable and less than the available throttle flow. All Elliott turbine-generator systems are optimized to provide maximum pay-back based on varying steam and electricity demands. A typical synchronous steam turbine-generator package includes a steam turbine, gear, couplings, generator, baseplate, control systems and lube console. Elliott can also provide auxiliary systems such as electrical switch gear and condensers. Directly connected induction generator packages are available, as well. This integrated Elliott turbine-generator package (above) includes a multistage condensing turbine, a speed reduction gear and a 6 MW synchronous generator. 6
