1. Characteristics Fishermeter VTS Series swirl flowmeter is made with a number of new technologies, both in the software and hardware featuring high accuracy and operational reliability. VTS Series swirl flowmeter can measure gas, liquid and steam in wide range, independent of the physical properties of the medium. In the design and operation it has the following features: 1. No moving parts, no wear, no mechanical maintenance. 2. Optimized blade angle and streamlined guide surface make the flow spiral more smoothly minimizing the pressure loss. 3. Widely used in measuring all types of medium such as gas, liquid and steam, applicable for measurement of low-density gases such as hydrogen and low-pressure gas 4. Full range of meter sizes and wide measuring span. 5. Unique dual piezoelectric ceramic sensor technology 6. Special materials available, such as H.C 7. Dual-sensor design available effectively improving operation reliability 8. DSP technology for more measurement stability 9. Super high pressure design up to 42MPa 10. Optional integrated temperature and pressure compensation 2. Measurement principle A turbine-shaped inlet section forces the axial flow entering the flowmeter into a rotational movement. A vortex core forms in the centre of the primary rotation. A secondary rotation forms in the vortex core producing thread-like spirals. The frequency of this secondary rotation is linearly proportional to the flowrate over a wide Reynolds Number range. Pressure variations resulting from the secondary rotation are detected by a piezo sensor and converted into electrical pulses. These pulses are processed in the DSP converter into scaled analog and digital signals.(fig.1) (Swirler) (Deswirler) 2

4. Installation Installation location and method will directly affect the flowmeter measurement. Improper installation will influence measuring accuracy, decrease the service life or even cause permanently damage to the flow meter. Installation should observe the following requirements: 4.1 Preparation before installation Check the flow meters in package referring to the packing list and report if there is any damages on them Make sure the pipeline is ready and locate installation position according to the following instructions Confirm the technical personnel are healthy to perform fixing work and get necessary tools available. 4.2 Installation procedures Fix companion flanges, gaskets and flow meter together with bolts (Figure 2), but not in final tight. If the companion flanges, bolts and gaskets are provided by the user, make sure that their size and pressure standard in conformity with the flow meter. Our technical engineer can help you in this regard. Fig Join the connected flow meter with the pipeline, and make sure the flow direction is same as the arrow mark on the meter body. Weld the companion flanges on the pipeline (Figure 3). generally only four evenly distributed welding spot. Attention:Flow meter and pipeline In one axial direction 4 welding points fixed the flange and pipeline % Fig.3 4

4.2.3 Remove the flow meter and gaskets, firmly complete the welding. (Fig. 4) Fig If the pipeline needs to be cleaned with air or other cleaning detergent, put in a pipe section with the same geometric size as flow meter first, and then clean the pipeline. Replace the substitute pipe with flow meter after cleaning finished. Attention: Never try to clean or purge the pipeline with flowmeter online 4.3 Installation notes The requirements on inlet and outlet straight run section Thanks to the special working principle of swirl flowmeter, the required length of inlet and outlet straight run pipe is quite shorter, but during the installation, do ensure that the minimum length must be guaranteed (as Figure 5). Otherwise it will seriously affect the measurement accuracy, and even lead to malfunction of the swirl flow meter. Fig. 5 5

4.3.2 Installed in high temperature working condition When temperature is higher than 180 for horizontal installation, the remote type is highly recommended, or lateral mounting shall be used with an angle between 45 ~60 from vertical to horizontal, as shown in Figure 6. Otherwise high temperature may damage the electronic part. Fig Installation in steam pipeline When steam or moisture is measured, the flow meter is to be installed in high point or down-to-up pipe section, as shown in Figure 7. At low point and up-to-down section shown in Fig 8, steam and moisture are easy to condense to form two-phase medium, which will cause inaccurate or failed measuring. Besides, in case liquid exists, supply of steam may cause water hammer, resulting in flow meter. Figure 7 Figure 8 6

4.3.4 Installation in liquid pipeline When liquid is measured, the pipeline must be full of medium, with meter mounted in low point of the pipeline, shown in Figure 9. At high point of the line as shown in Figure 10, bubbles tend to exist, which serious affect the accuracy of measurement. When meter has to be installed vertically, the fluid must flow upwards, as shown in Fig.11, and otherwise pipe cannot be filled full. Fig. 9 Fig. 10 Fig. 11 7

4.3.5 Insulation If flow-valued pipe has to be insulated, the thickness at the flow meter cannot exceed 50mm, shown Fig.12. The excessive insulation may result in rise of temperature, leading to the damage of the converter. Thickness less than 50mm Fig Maintenance space 200mm space above the converter must be reserved for routine maintenance and disassembly, shown in Figure mm Fig The flowmeter should be installed in a place free from vibration that will interfere with the stable measurement. If necessary, provide support for both sides of the flow meter or apply flexible connection between flow meter and source of vibration There should be a shut-off valve prior to the flow meter and close the valve to stop the flow inside the pipe. Only the control valve placed at the outlet of the flow meter is to be used to control the volume of the flow rate. If there is no flow in pipe, pressure may fluctuate which may cause error signal, so such a case ought to be avoided In case steam and liquid are both in the medium to be measured, a separator is necessary for accurate metering. 8

4.4 Installation of remote type swirl flowmeter The installation of the senor meter is the same as the one of compact type swirl flowmeter. The converter shall be fixed firmly onto wall or mounted in a cabinet. The maximum data-communication length between the converter and senor part is 10 meters and the shorter the shielded cable is, the smaller the interference is. So in accordance with the actual distance, cut off the excessive cable. Because the signal from the sensor to the signal converter is not amplified, signal is vulnerable to interference during transmission. the cable shield should be grounded together with power s ground. After the wiring work is complete, fix the cable in wire channel, shown in Fig. 14. Fig Installation with temperature and pressure compensation The installation of swirl flow meter with temperature and pressure compensation function is recommended as shown in Fig. 15. Fig. 15 9

When the power is resumed, the flow meter will run immediately as it does before the power-off. Instruction for applicable industries. Medium Swirl flow meter can be used to measure gas, liquid and steam, but the medium must be the same as agreed when the flowmeter is ordered. The medium must not be corrosive chemically and physically to flowmeter including its body, swirler, probe and deswirler. If there is new medium other than the agreed, it must be quiet assured that it will not damage the meter. If not, please consult our company engineer. The temperature and pressure rating showed on the name plate should be not be surpassed in its application. The flow meter cannot be installed on line until cleaning process by either steam or pneumatic air is completed. Follow the requirements on installation ambience for swirl flow meter. The meter should be installed in the environment away from electric motor, transformer and electromagnetic interference. The flowmeter should be installed in a place far from vibration. If necessary, provide fixed support for both sides of the flow meter or apply flexible connection between flow meter and source of vibration. Following actions to be avoided Take the flowmeter as compensation for the insufficiency of pipe length or angle deviation. Stand on it or use it for supporting weight. Strike other thing with the flow meter. Treat the meter by striking, drilling and welding. Paint the name plate. 16
