Jane Gdall s Rts & Shts is the sustainability educatin and yuth empwerment prgram f the Jane Gdall Institute and is active in 87 cuntries. 4 4 Jane Gdall s Rts & Shts Dr. Jane created Rts & Shts 25 years ag with 12 Tanzanian high schl students wh wanted t tackle urgent prblems in their cmmunity. Rts & Shts grups are nw making a psitive difference fr peple, ther animals and the envirnment all arund the wrld. Yung peple design and lead prjects in their cmmunities that tackle issues they feel strngly abut. 10 10 Step 2: Understand In the secnd step f the Rts & Shts Jurney, yung peple physically map their cmmunity while learning t critically bserve and understand the wrld arund them, identifying key issues as they d s. In rder t make yur cmmunity a better place fr peple, ther animals and the envirnment, yu need t first understand wh lives there and if everyne s needs are being met.

11 11 Cmmunity Mapping Creating a map f a cmmunity s peple, animals and envirnmental features is the first step the Jane Gdall Institute f Canada takes in ur prjects in African cmmunities. Yu and yur yung peple will begin the same way. JaneGdallInstitute

12 12 Mapping Yur Cmmunity Map the peple, ther animals and envirnmental features in yur cmmunity. The map can be paper and pencil, a dirama, cmputer generated using mapping sftware such as Ggle Maps r wrld-building sftware such as Minecraft, etc. The gal is t understand wh is in yur cmmunity and then determine if there are any cmmunity issues yur yuth may be able t address in their prject. 1. Chse the cmmunity. Fr yunger peple, the cmmunity may be a schlyard r frnt yard. Fr lder yuth, it can encmpass a whle city. There are n wrng answers as lng as it is lcal, chse any cmmunity that they d like t make a difference in. 2. Get utside! Physically walk arund the cmmunity, draw pictures, take phts, identify species, speak t cmmunity members, bserve wildlife, etc. 3. Analyze what has been learned. Are the needs f any f the peple, ther animals r envirnmental features in yur cmmunity NOT being met? Are there any animals missing? Is the envirnment as clean and healthy as it can be? Are the peple respected, well-fed, emplyed, and treated fairly? Yur yung peple will likely identify a few issues, s yu ll need t assist them in chsing ne t fcus n and design a prject arund. 13 13 Step 3: Take Actin In the third step f the Rts & Shts Jurney, yung peple determine which cmmunity issue they wuld like t tackle and design and implement a plan t d s. It is key t remember that peple, ther animals and the envirnment are intercnnected, s when they are designing their prject, take the time t cnsider hw their actins will affect all three grups.

14 14 Taking Actin During the cmmunity mapping activity, yur yung peple will have identified a number f issues affecting the peple, ther animals and envirnment in the cmmunity. Help them narrw dwn and chse ne issue and design a prject that takes actin n it. Types f actins taken include: Educate: Infrm the cmmunity f lcal sustainability issues. Mtivate: Inspire changes in cnsumer & lifestyle chices by ffering sustainable alternatives. Restre: Create, rehabilitate r maintain natural areas Advcate: Take advcacy actin t raise awareness abut yur cause Fr step by step instructins n creating yur prject, dwnlad ur Prtecting ur Sacred Water guide. 15 15 United Natins Sustainable Develpment Gals Each Rts & Shts prject is meant t make a psitive difference fr the peple, ther animals and envirnment in yur cmmunity. Yur yuth s prject may fcus n ne f these three grups but remember that they are all intercnnected any psitive change fr ne grup shuld als (eventually) be gd fr the ther tw. Finding a balance between the needs f sciety, ecnmy and the envirnment (r in Rts & Shts terms: peple, ther animals and the envirnment) is the main idea behind the cncept f sustainability. 18 18 GARDEN OF HOPE Sydney & Leah, Gergetwn, ON Rts & Shts Prject Examples High schl students Sydney and Leah believe that a lt f yung peple spend s much time in frnt f screens and cell phnes, they have becme discnnected frm nature. S, wrking with the students at Park Public Elementary Schl in Gergetwn, Ontari, the du built six raised planter beds that will huse a variety f plants and flwers. Each grade will decide what they d like t see grwing in their planter, frm an assrtment f herbs t peppers, tmates, and nins. Sydney and Leah called their initiative The Garden f Hpe, as they believe it will allw students t engage with nature and learn abut sustainability while gaining practical gardening skills. The energetic teens als made the mst f their netwrks: their dads helped them build the beds, the lcal Hme Hardware dnated building materials, and the City f Haltn prvided three years Ophir Sarusi wrth f cmpst.

19 19 FINDING SOLUTIONS TO FOOD WASTE Westmunt Charter Schl-Elementary Campus, Calgary, AB When the third-grade students at Calgary s Westmunt Charter Schl decided t tackle the issue f fd waste, the first thing they did was invite guest speakers frm COSTCO and the Calgary Fd Bank t speak t the schl abut the issue. The students discvered that 50% f fd waste in landfills is generated by private hmes, and that a cmmunity cmpsting prgram culd significantly reduce this number. The furth graders subsequently implemented a cmpsting prgram in the classrm, and have nw written letters t the Mayr f Calgary and Members f the Legislative Assembly f Alberta asking that the city fllw their example by initiating cmmunity-wide cmpsting. WATER WALK Kitaskinaw Schl, Ench Cree Natin, AB The entire schl n this First Natin Reserve tk part in a march arund the cmmunity t raise awareness abut imprving ur relatinship with water and treating it as a relative, nt just a resurce. In preparatin fr the walk, Cree Elders shared their teachings n the use f water in traditinal drum and rattle making.

20 20 MAKING LIFE BLOOM ON A GRAVEL LOT Stand Up, Standut Cmmittee, Vanguard Schl, Mntreal, QC Middle and high schl students in Mntreal built and planted a schl greenhuse t: prmte healthy eating, reduce their ec ftprint by prviding the schl cafeteria with lcal, fresh prduce prvide fr the cmmunity kitchen and fd bank. RED WIGGLERS WISE Kid-Netic Energy Girls Club, Winnipeg, MB The WISE Kid-Netic Energy Girls Club at the University f Manitba learned abut the value f cmpsting and implemented vermiculture prgrams in their cmmunities. MEDICINE WHEEL CLASSROOM Terrace Ridge Schl, Lacmbe, AB This K-7 schl designed and built an utdr classrm in the shape f a Cree Medicine Wheel. Students lead the planting and maintenance each year, ensuring they use native plants that create wildlife habitats. The classrm was blessed by a lcal Cree Elder and has becme a beautiful meeting place used by the schl and cmmunity alike.
