Exhibit: How habitat gardens contribute to ecosystem health by attracting and providing habitat for birds, butterflies, and other wildlife. 10 01 Building sequence Engineering: The structure of the MorningStar is built primarily of polyurethane Structural Insulated Panes (SIP's) manufactured in Pennsylvania, and structural steel fabricated locally. Structural Insulated Panels are engineered for maximum use of spanning and insulating properties. Steel Framing is engineered to support a high-mass home and to be expressive of the architectural concept.

11 01 Building sequence Prefabrication: The MorningStar design-build concept combined the economies of prefabrication with the merits of on-site construction, and support an efficient, safe, and rapid paced assembly process. Safety: Develop a culture of safety on our team through training, mentoring, and mutual respect. Prefabrication and Preassembly: Utilize prefabrication to improve quality, reduce labor requirements, increase safety, and reduce cost. Transportation: Develop a modular construction process that will permit the Technical Core and Living Space modular to be transported and married efficiently. Assembly: Combine panelized and modular techniques with volunteers and student-friendly details to streamline the assembly process.

16 01 Day lighting 02 DC lighting Lighting Maximize Daylighting: High levels of both daytime habitation and passive daylighting combine to increase the value of the daylighting strategies while saving energy and improving living quality. Explore LED Lighting and DC Power: DC power produced by the solar energy systems will be utilized to operate the LED lighting systems. Implementing this synergistic energy system will serve to assess the DC power needs of the home. Implement Advanced Lighting Controls: Energy use reduction is addressed by incorporating dimmers on the lighting control systems to create "scenes" of minimal but appropriate lighting levels for specific activities or time of day. 03 LED lighting Develop Weather-Based Lighting Controls: Solar energy production is intimately related to weather. Our lighting design explores how occupants can be alerted to good, average, and poor solar days based on web-based weather data. Deploy Diverse Luminaries: Advancements in luminaries, ballasts, and lamp design create new arrangement opportunities using a diverse set of luminaries to introduce light in innovative ways while improving overall energy efficiency. Our design experiments with a diverse set of the latest energy efficient lamp sources.

17 01 Radiant Floor Plan Comfort Zone The MorningStar Pennsylvania is heated by a radiant floor heating system, and cooled by a forced-air cooling system. The airconditioning is very similar to a traditional AC. Air is drawn into the air handler, cooled and dried, then blown back into the rooms through a ductwork system. Heating the home is done through a radiant floor system. 02 Radiant Floor Heating

18 01 Perimeter Heating Plan Comfort Zone This increased-efficiency heating method allows for cooler air temperatures while maintaining occupant comfort, also reducing the heat loss through the building envelope. The source for this heating and cooling is provided by an electrically driven heat pump that will be ground-source.

19 01 Solar Energy balance In the winter, the heat and the moisture will stay in the house while fresh air is brought in. During the warm summer months, the heat and moisture will be kept outside, and leaving the cooler and dryer conditions in the house, but will still bring in fresh air.

21 01 Control System Control System The Direct Digital Control (DDC) system installed within the home provides: Control of energy consumption of the mechanical and domestic water equipment, Opportunity for innovation through sequencing that respond to changes in the home, and Research initiatives into the detailed performance of the mechanical systems. The Energy Dashboard is unique feature of the MorningStar Pennsylvania. This simple monitor records and provides real-time data to teach the occupants about their energy production, facilitating informed decisions about daily tasks. The dashboard potentially could adjust behaviors of the occupant, to further reduce energy consumption.

24 01 Pennsylvania 02 Montana Market viability The team was working with the Northern Cheyenne Tribe and Chief Dull Knife College in Montana to build the marketable prototype simultaneously with the competition home. Designing both homes was to show that the benefits of renewable technologies can be realized in different economic and environmental settings. Response to the two climates and variable resources will be demonstrated. Also, by engaging an actual community partner in the Cheyenne Tribe, The team helped the Cheyenne better understand the features of the home and take ownership of the final product. Through this process, they established a connection which is integral to the learning experience. As the home evolves and learns from its environment, the community will also evolve and learn from the home.
