12 Surface Water Assessment Grant Sampling $86,514 SWAG Grant from the MPCA for the Grand Marais Creek and Red Lake River watersheds Sampled by Marshall County staff.

13 State Water Quality Standards What are impaired waters? Dissolved Oxygen needs to be greater than 5mg/L E. coli Standard = 126 CFU/100mlNTU (chronic), 1260 CFU/100ml (acute) Turbidity Standard = 25 NTU ph Standard = Within the range of 6.5 to 8.5

15 Turbidity Some turbidity in rivers is natural, but excess turbidity can be harmful to aquatic life. Clogging fish gills. Reduced growth rates. Sedimentation of habitat Harder to find food Plants can t thrive if turbidity blocks light. Decreased resistance to disease Harmful to larvae and egg development Sediment absorbs sunlight and increases water temperatures. Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen than cool water. 25 NTU
