Draft Water Resources Management Plan 2020 to 2080 Our plan to secure water su l es for generat ons to come through shared know h 2 ow Draft Water Resources Management Plan

Your future water We supply around 520 million litres of top quality, fresh drinking water a day to our 2.2 million customers across Kent, Surrey, Sussex, Hampshire and Berkshire. The south east is an area of severe water stress which means a high proportion of the rain that falls here goes towards keeping our taps flowing. During hot dry periods, demand for water increases rapidly to over 650 million litres a day (that s over one billion pints)! Our supply area Maidenhead Greater London Reading Newbury Wokingham Bracknell Western region Basingstoke Aldershot Frimley Guildford Reigate Farnham Winchester Horsham Petersfield Portsmouth Chichester Brighton southeastwater.co.uk

Every five years we update our water resources management plan (WRMP) which looks at how we ll keep your taps running in the future, while striking that delicate balance between protecting the environment and keeping bills affordable. We re currently consulting on our latest draft WRMP and would welcome your thoughts and feedback. 5 Achievements since our previous plan Since we published our last water resources management plan in 2014, we ve been working to put our proposals into action. Achievements include: Invested an extra 7 million in the latest technology to combat leaks On track to have 90 per cent of customers metered by 2020 Reduced demand by 21 million litres a day despite 47,000 new homes being built Exceeded our leak target, for the last 15 years reducing the amount of water lost by an extra 2.3 million litres a day Fix 90 per cent of leaks within 24 hours Upgraded and developed new water treatment works providing an extra 31 million litres a day We have seen water consumption reduce from 172 litres per day in 2011/12 to 151 litres in 2016/17 Tested our award winning water efficiency campaign with 22,000 households resulting in water savings of two per cent

Challenges and opportunities Challenges over the next 60 years Rising population and growing housing needs 53% The population in our supply area is set to increase 53 per cent to 3.34 million by 2080 Changing weather patterns Supplies need to increase by 272 million litres a day by 2080 Operating in an area of serious water stress and high environmental sensitivity Choosing new water sources which are both environmentally resilient and best value for our customers Our 60 year proposals total 1 billion* worth of investment in securing supplies Opportunities over the next 60 years Keeping bills affordable Preserving the environment Sharing resources with neighbouring water companies Supporting the development of new technologies Using innovative behaviour change techniques combined with water efficiency initiatives Working with landowners to improve the water quality of rivers and groundwater sources southeastwater.co.uk *Today s prices

Creating the draft plan Over the past year we ve been working with environmental and customer groups, colleagues from other water companies, as well as external organisations including the Met Office and local authorities to understand future changes in population, climate and water availability. We ve also been speaking to customers to understand what they feel our priorities should be and how willing to pay for various different levels of service. Using all the information gathered, as well as our previous water resource management plan, we came up with 510 initial options which ranged from building new reservoirs to increasing our education programme. Following screening by our Environmental Focus Group, 172 feasible options were put forward before the final 41 were selected which we feel offer the best value and most cost effective ways to meet the water deficit. Near future options 2020 to 2045 Further leak reduction Water efficiency measures Egham to Surrey Hills reduction (Berkshire and Surrey) New water source at Aylesford (Kent) Water treatment works improvements Improved water pipe connectivity across our supply area and with other water companies Creating new reservoirs at Broad Oak (Kent) and Arlington (East Sussex) Water reuse on the River Ouse and River Medway Catchment management programmes Long term considerations 2045 to 2080 Desalination at Eastbourne (East Sussex) Reculver and Medway (Kent) Connected use of surface and groundwater (Sussex) New reservoir in West Sussex Improved water pipe connectivity across our supply areas and with other water companies Expansion of Bewl water treatment works (Kent) Water reuse on the River Stour (Kent) New ground water sources at Maidenhead (Berkshire) and Farnborough (Hampshire) New water abstraction from River Thames, (Berkshire) Draft Water Resources Management Plan

New supply options The map below shows our preferred plan.
