The Tracking Network The Tracking Network is a system of integrated health, exposure, and hazard information and data from a variety of national, state, and city sources.

The Tracking Network Access to health and environmental information Allows user to query data Provides contextual information and prevention messages

Network Content Health Content Asthma Birth Defects Cancer Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Childhood Lead Poisoning Developmental Disabilities Heart Attacks Reproductive & Birth Outcomes Environment Content Climate Change Community Design Homes Water Outdoor Air o Monitor & Modeled data o Health Impacts of Fine Particles in Air (mortality estimate tool) Other Content Population Characteristics Biomonitoring: Population Exposures

Growing Over Time State / local networks & capacity Topics / data Functions Use / impact

New to the Network in 2012 Content Areas Biomonitoring (11 analytes) Children s Environmental Health Functionality Enhanced mapping capabilities Improved options for charts

EXAMPLES SUCCESS STORIES

Reducing Effects of Extreme Heat in California Cooling centers costly, but can be life-saving San Jose city leaders needed proof of health impacts of heat before approving cooling centers Tracking identified increase of heat-related ER visits during heat events City leaders approved cooling centers to open

Tracking Health Effects of Outdoor Air Quality in Maine About one in 10 children and adults in Maine have asthma ozone in air can be health risk Tracking Program linked outdoor ozone data with asthma-related hospital data Health department has used info to identify residents at high risk and in need of prevention services

CDC s Tracking Network is the most important accomplishment of the past decade. Questions? 19 Providing Neighborhood Level Cancer Data in New York New York residents want to see maps showing new cancer cases in their neighborhoods Tracking Program worked with partners to develop application that shows cancer cases by location while maintaining privacy Health departments can use tool to respond more efficiently to information requests

Addressing Air Quality Concerns in Wisconsin Outdoor wood boilers popular in Wisconsin, smoke can affect health Tracking Program provided air quality data so local health departments could address community concerns Data used to target appropriate interventions based on sources of air pollution

Monitoring Birth Defects in Florida The possible association between birth defects and environmental contamination is a real concern Tracking Program worked with other state programs to develop a surveillance system to identify and confirm cases Project has helped to identify women that could be at risk Education activities also implemented
