Pavement Maintenance Overview

Why Institute a Program of Pavement Maintenance? This question was first addressed around 70 years ago - launching an industry with ever-changing methods and ideology, but all with the aim of extending the appearance and life of pavement.

What is Pavement Maintenance? Pavement Maintenance is the sum of all activities undertaken to provide and maintain serviceable asphalt surfaces. Pavement maintenance results in enhanced pavement performance and aesthetics, ensured cost-effectiveness, extended pavement life, reduced user delays, and improved safety and mobility.

Your Pavement Has Enemies!

Shift from Worst First to Preventive Maintenance Preventive Maintenance: A systematic process of applying a series of preventive maintenance treatments over the life of the pavement to maintain a good condition, extend pavement life and minimize life-cycle costs.

Total Cost of Non-Maintained Pavement is more than three times the Cost of Maintaining Pavement

What Tools are Available? Crack Filling Patching Sealcoat Fog Seal Cape Seal Slurry Seal Micro Surface

Condition and Solution Aged, white pavement? Seal Coating and Striping

Condition and Solution Trip Hazard Infrared Patching

Condition and Solution ADA Compliance Handicap Stalls

Condition and Solution Linear or Alligator Cracks Hot or Cold Crack Filling

Left unfilled, cracks will allow rain and moisture to flow through pavement and erode base materials, resulting in potholes and pavement failure.

Sealing cracks with a specialized crack sealant helps prevent rain and moisture from flowing through the pavement and causing erosion or failure.

Condition and Solution Raveled Pavement Remove and Replace

What are the Benefits of Seal Coating? Asphalt Remains Structurally Sound Enhances Aesthetics Optimizes Safety Reduces Maintenance Costs

Sealcoating Fills small cracks Reduces amount of water intrusion Replenishes asphalt binder Oxidation causes HMAC binder to become brittle Protects against fuel & oil leaks Provides skid resistance

Application Methods Squeegee applies more material except when pavement is smooth, e.g. has been previously sealed Spraying provides more coverage control and has a better finish

Spray Application

Squeegee Application

SPRAY COARSE SURFACE

SQUEEGEE COARSE SURFACE

SPRAY SMOOTH SURFACE

SQUEEGEE SMOOTH SURFACE

Sealer Application The Key To Quality: Coverage Rate It is imperative to achieve the proper coverage rate! Regardless of application method, the proper amount of sealer must be applied to the pavement surface. In most cases, the method of application is ultimately the choice of the installer. Either method will work if the proper coverage rate is achieved.

Weather Requirements Minimum Temperature Requirements Daytime - 50ºF and rising Night time - Shall not drop below 50ºF

Weather Requirements Sealer Film Formation Warm temperatures are required for proper coalescence (film forming) Cold temperatures will result in poor coalescence and ultimate failure

Minimum Cure Time Twenty-four hours recommended Resuming traffic too soon will damage film

Pavement Maintenance Success With proper materials and application, you can plan and implement a successful pavement maintenance program.
