READ WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS HAVE TO SAY CHALLENGE: How Can We Sample Different Sized Bottles? A gas production facility in Victoria Australia required low temperature (-43C) propane sampling of various sized bottles. SWAGELOK EASTERN AUSTRALIA was able to provide a custom designed sample cylinder holder that accommodates both the spun type and cylinder type of sample cylinders. A safety concern was raised as operators would bubble propane from the top of the cylinder to check for flow. This was a safety concern as spillage resulted in freezing of their protective gloves to the sampling cylinder. Swagelok assisted by sourcing a low temperature sight glass that was trialed in the customer s laboratory to verify flow rates were acceptable. This was then incorporated into the panel, enabling the lab personnel to know if there was flow through the cylinder. Now samples of various types can be taken easily. Operators do not have to hold the sample bottle, significantly reducing risk of injury. CHALLENGE: How Can We Configure a Panel To Meet Unique Needs? SWAGELOK OKLAHOMA WEST TEXAS created a panel for an R&D facility that focuses on research to enable their refineries to run more efficiently and consume less water and energy in the face of changing regulations and continuing environmental compliance. The facility researches heavy metals, renewable diesel, air, water and biofuels. The facility was looking for a continuous flow, fixed volume, liquid sampler, with a purge. But the location and the high viscosity fluid that was running through the system would not work with a standard GSL systems, or with ¼ tubing. The panel was redesigned to incorporate the customer s need to fit in a small space and for all of the components to be available regionally. Using straight run ¾ tubing for the continuous flow solved the problem of working with a high viscosity fluid. Thanks to Swagelok Oklahoma West Texas s local ability to assess and recommend a grab sample solution, they were able to configure a panel that meets this customer s unique needs.

EDMONTON VALVE & FITTING has a Midstream customer who purchases NGL mix and fractionates it into finished products for distribution and sale. They have a rail-based terminal which services their needs for importing and exporting NGL products. There are 3 fractionators on site along with multiple finished product caverns for storage This customer required a grab sampling panel capable of handling product from as many as five high pressure caverns. The high pressure and temperature requirements dictated the use of Swagelok s H83 trunnion ball valves. A series of three 3-way valves allowed selection of each cavern, and distribution into one GSM panel. The panel was hydro-tested and delivered with a detailed certificate. This final step gave the customer peace of mind that the components will operate properly and safely within their system parameters Local capability, with a customizable standardized offering, differentiated us from the competition and the customer was impressed with our ability to provide a plug and play solution that met their delivery schedule. The customer has ordered three additional grab sample panels customized to their specific application requirements. All three will be assembled with Silconert fittings, tubing, and valves. CHALLENGE: How Can We Improve Efficiency and Protect Our Staff? A chemical company in Tokyo, Japan required non-pressurized liquid samples to be taken from their process. This would ensure a representative sample, that the correct process would be followed, and that operators of the system would not come into contact with the sample. The customer requested no electrical components to be used, avoiding static potential and eliminating potential fire risks. SWAGELOK JAPAN assisted with the design support and fabrication of the sampling cabinet, which isolates the system media from the user during the sampling process via a separate enclosed area with door. With this design, the operator only has access to the switches needed for each step. This helps to eliminate errors and makes the system easier to operate. The customer now receives more reliable and accurate samples much faster than before, with increased safety. *All customer case studies and testimonials have been provided from customer interviews

READ WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS HAVE TO SAY CHALLENGE: How Do We Improve our Sample Quality? A refinery in Pennsylvania had been experiencing problems with wet gas sampling for years. Some of the common types of wet samples are those with condensable liquids that tend to fall out of the gas stream, such as off-gas and fuel gas. These liquids would enter their grab sampling panels and cause issues with the pressure regulators and other components. Numerous investigative and troubleshooting efforts were costly for the refinery. These samples are usually considered compliance samples and are a daily requirement. A non-working sample point forces Operators to go to an open-to-atmosphere sample point which is dangerous and not permitted by environmental groups. Due to the importance of the sample point, SWAGELOK PENN worked with the refinery s Unit Operators and Process Engineers to come up with the best solution. The gas samples were shown to have liquids that were carry-over from another part of the facility and deemed unnecessary to the gas sample itself. The liquids could be removed without affecting the composition makeup of the sample stream. Swagelok Penn s solution was to include a knockout pot on their grab sampling system to remove excess condensate and keep the wet sample as dry as possible, while keeping the refinery s operations in environmental compliance. CHALLENGE: How Can We Standardize our Sample Points? One of the largest refineries in the UK approached SWAGELOK SCOTLAND about standardising their grab sample panels, replacing simple tap-off filter sample connections with a safer, better quality sampling process. After attending Swagelok Process Analyser Sampling System (PASS) Training, the customer invited Swagelok s Field Engineer to educate them on how to implement their standardization initiative. Demonstrating animated flow diagrams of the suggested solution, which required a slight variation to the switching design, the grab sample panels were aligned to the customer s needs. The end result was that our Grab Sample Panels provided a standardized, easy-to-use solution for upgrading the customer s obsolete sampling systems. Our panels replaced a simple tap-off filter sample connection, replacing the panels provided an improved quality, representative sample more safely. The support that Swagelok has provided to the refinery has led to additional product supply including sample probes, tubing bundles and Swagelok KEV heated regulator assemblies.

CHALLENGE: How Can We Change Cylinders Safely Without Using Tools? Oil & Gas and Chemical & Refining customers often share their pain of how troublesome and inconvenient it is for them to insert and remove sampling cylinders from grab sampling panels. Customers have difficulty in changing cylinders, because they must use tools to uncouple cylinder holders, which slows down the sampling process and can lead to dropping vital equipment, potentially damaging equipment and is a risk of injury to the operator. SWAGELOK MALAYSIA heard their concerns and created a system which allows easy changing of cylinders without the use of tools. Using their extensive experience in the market place, Swagelok assisted by identifying a toggle handle which could be modified to their specific needs and incorporated this toggle mechanism into a new sampling panel design. The customer can now quickly and effortlessly change cylinders without using tools, increasing safety and efficiency of the operators. CHALLENGE: How Can We Overcome Design Concerns? EDMONTON VALVE AND FITTING was able to provide a safe and reliable solution for a Midstream oil and gas company that was adding Merox capabilities to their facility. Merox refers to removing mercaptans from LPGs, propanes, butanes, etc. The engineering firm had design concerns regarding a suggested competitive panel, for an atmospheric liquid grab sample system.it was a GSL 1 but they needed a purge option without the purge. The GSL 1 was fit with an eductor on the vent line to minimize the footprint and keep safety the priority. The panel was heated and enclosed due to the caustic nature of the liquids involved. Edmonton Valve & Fitting made communication much easier between the third party engineering firm and the end user, resulting in a far better design that best suited their application. Having on-site presence and continuing dialogue with the end user engineering, operations, and lab personnel during the bid process differentiated Edmonton Valve & Fitting, and we are now working with this customer on other grab sample applications. *All customer case studies and testimonials have been provided from customer interviews

READ WHAT OUR CUSTOMERS HAVE TO SAY CHALLENGE: How Can We Meet Strict Environmental Regulations? A petrochemical facility in Taiwan was facing pressure from Government and environmental groups, which was forcing industries with medium to high Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) exhausts to reduce emissions. Grab sampling often requires venting-to-atmosphere, so the customer approached Swagelok to assist in the design of a closed loop sampling system to reduce emissions. Swagelok assisted by leveraging their experience with sampling systems to provide design support, along with technical support and training for their engineers. The SWAGELOK TAIWAN solution offered a cabinet to protect the closed loop sampling system for the 163 sampling points across the plant. Sample cylinder sub-assemblies were also supplied to standardize the sampling vessel, speeding up the sampling process and reducing emissions. The customer now complies with the strict environmental regulations and has positively used innovation to help the environment.
