11 Case Study 2: Old Fort Lowell Restoration Project SITE HISTORY Located within a prehistoric Hohokam village, known as the Hardy Site, that dates from AD and AD Ft Lowell established as US Army Supply Base included 30 adobe buildings, abandoned in Tuberculosis sanitarium 1928 Adkins family purchased sanitarium and began operating the Adkins Steel and Tank Manufacturing Company from 1934 until 2006 City acquired the site in 2006

16 Case Study 2: Old Fort Lowell Restoration Project THE PROCESS Findings Soil impacted by lead, arsenic, & PAHs In areas of high contamination, samples did not exceed the EPA toxicity characteristic levels (TCLP) Soil was classified as non- hazardous and disposed of at the City s Los Reales Landfill No Further Action Determination received in April 2013

20 Case Study 3: Southern AZ AIDS Foundation(SAAF) The site was cleared land that was not structurally developed. Phase I ESA completed in 2011 and did not identify any RECs The site has been redeveloped into the offices for SAFF SAFF serves people infected with or affected by HIV/AIDS by providing : Affordable and ergonomically friendly housing Food Case Management Support groups Testing Outreach and education Clinics

21 To conclude The City of Tucson has received over $3 million in Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Grants With our current Assessment Grant, we are focusing on downtown revitalization efforts so that: brownfields sites are assessed, remediated, infill is accomplished while historic roots are revitalized and the pristine desert is preserved while providing a healthy, sustainable environment.
