1 ACG publication in development CALL FOR SPONSORSHIP Unsaturated Soils Guidelines (Volume 1) Soil Water Characteristic Curves for Materials Classified According to International Unified Soil Classification Systems

2 Background These new ACG guidelines will detail the key aspects and behaviour of unsaturated soils. This is the first volume in potentially a series of volumes on this highly topical and relevant subject matter. The editors are Professors Ken Mercer, Professor Environmental and Mining Geomechanics, Australian Centre for Geomechanics, Australia, Professor Harianto Rahardjo, Head of Division of Infrastructure Systems and Maritime Studies, School of Civil & Environmental Engineering, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and Alfrendo Satyanga, Research Associate, Nangyang Technological University, Singapore. The ACG aims to produce guidelines that will be a highly valued and relevant reference for all those working in the mining industry having responsibilities for unsaturated soil mechanics. The publication is a guidance and advice manual aimed at providing industry personnel with the information that will assist them in managing these work areas and to relate to and brief their design consultants. It is expected that the guidelines will be of significant value to those involved in mining operations, as well as civil engineering, consulting, research and teaching bodies throughout the world. The work on these guidelines is already well advanced, however, a number of gaps remain in the soil database that requires further laboratory testing. Guidelines Content and Format Soil-water characteristic curve (SWCC) defines the relationship between water content and suction (negative pore-water pressure) of the soil. SWCC is used for modelling water flow through saturated-unsaturated system and for estimating the engineering properties of unsaturated soil, such as: permeability and shear strength of unsaturated soil. The objective of Volume 1 of the Guidelines is to correlate and present the SWCC statistics categorised according to four key international soil classification standards which are: i. ASTM D American Standard ii. iii. iv. AS Australian Standard BS 5930 British Standard SNV670010/SN670010b Swiss Standard. Other such as EN ISO 14688:2:2004, DIN18196and LST1331:2002 may also be included. The basis for most of these is the unified soil classification system (USCS). The title and contents of Volume 1 of the Guidelines is as follows: Unsaturated Soil Guidelines (Volume 1) Soil Water Characteristic Curves for Materials Classified According to International Unified Soil Classification Systems 1) Introduction 2) A summary of the theory of soil grading, Atterberg Limits and SWCC 3) Review of the soil classification standards/uscs systems 4) Grading and SWCC Curves for USCS Single Classification System 5) Additional Grading SWCC Curves for USCS Double Classification System 6) Guidelines for undertaking laboratory testing References Appendices The scope of the soils that is intended to be included in the guidelines includes natural soils, tailings as well as fully weathered residual rock (saprolite). It is planned that the guidelines be a handy, softbound, A4 size, full colour publication.

3 About the Editors Professor Ken Mercer Professor Environmental and Mining Geomechanics Australian Centre for Geomechanics, Australia Ken has more than 26 years of experience in the civil engineering and mining industries as a geotechnical engineer, researcher and consultant. Ken s areas of expertise include both soil mechanics and rock engineering in the fields of paste and thickened tailings, waste dumps and open pit mining. Ken holds a PhD in mining engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa, in the field of the deformation behaviour of unsupported rock slopes, and an MBA from Curtin University, Western Australia. Before joining the ACG, Ken was a divisional manager for the Snowden geotechnical group and an executive consultant. Professor Harianto Rahardjo Head of Division of Infrastructure Systems and Maritime Studies School of Civil & Environmental Engineering Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Professor Rahardjo has over 30 years of working experience in consulting, teaching and research in geotechnical engineering. He has conducted extensive research on unsaturated soil mechanics to solve geotechnical problems associated with tropical residual soils. Professor Rahardjo s recent research activities involved the application of unsaturated soil mechanics in capillary barrier system for slope stabilisation through laboratory and numerical analyses and instrumented capillary barrier systems in the field. He is the co-author of the first textbook on unsaturated soils Soil Mechanics for Unsaturated Soils (John Wiley & Sons, 1993), by D.G. Fredlund and H. Rahardjo and the second textbook Unsaturated Soil Mechanics in Engineering Practice (John Wiley & Sons, 2012), by D.G. Fredlund, H. Rahardjo and M.D. Fredlund. Alfrendo Satyanaga School of Civil & Environmental Engineering Nanyang Technological University, Singapore Alfrendo has over 10 years of civil engineering experience as a geotechnical engineer, consultant and researcher. His area of expertise includes the application of the unsaturated soil mechanics to slope stability and landfill problems. Alfrendo is currently a research associate at NTU and his recent research activities involved the effect of dual porosity soil on hydraulic properties and shear strength of the unsaturated soil. Alfrendo holds a masters degree in geotechnical engineering from the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, United Kingdom. He has published and presented more than 20 technical papers in international journals and conferences.

4 Guidelines Promotion The ACG will undertake a niche marketing and promotional campaign to promote the guidelines to mining professionals. y Internet marketing promoted from the ACG website and relevant event websites. y Promotion of the upcoming publication in the ACG newsletter that is distributed to more than 7,000 mining professionals worldwide. y Regular updates to the ACG s mailing list. y Industry Association endorsement from leading organisations and universities such as Curtin University, CSIRO, UWA and NTU, Singapore. y Direct mail campaign publication of specific flyers. y Media support and coverage from International Mining and other reputable industry journals, magazines and newsletters. y Ongoing international exposure through ACG international mining events. y A specific marketing campaign to worldwide universities and further education organisers such as InfoMine. Qualification The ACG is a not-for-profit University of Western Australia (UWA) research centre. It is controlled by a Board of Management, including Joint Venture Partner representatives, industry representatives and is headed by an industry chairman. All proceeds of its operations in excess of operating expenses are returned to research and training activities. ACG Publication History The ACG has a proven record in developing, producing and publishing specialised, unique industry guides, including: Handbook on Mine Fill, published in More than 650 units sold to date.
