What is the Ohio Energy Project? Tusky VAlley Intermediate School Project Leader: Mrs. Tiffany Shaw Project Summary- Tusky Valley Intermediate School participated in the Ohio Energy Project for the first time during the school year. Students were very excited to learn about how to conserve energy and save money. In turn, students were able to help educate their family on energy saving practices. In the following slides, each energy saving lesson is depicted with the actual experiment. Mrs. Shaw formed Science Club that met on Wednesdays during recess time. Students who wanted to extend their knowledge of science and enjoy extention activities from the Ohio Energy Project had the opportunity to do so during Science Club.

Project Goals & REsults Because this was the first year TVIS participated in the Ohio Energy Project the GOAL of our project was focused on teaching students and families about energy saving practices that were learned through the Ohio Energy Project Results indicated that students knowledge of energy saving practices increased based pre post test scores and that energy saving measures took place in families homes based on Family Survey

Home Energy Audit The home energy audit is used to show how much energy you are using The audit will show if you are using too much energy If you are using too much energy you are also wasting money The solution is to implement the energy saving practices learned through the Ohio Energy Project

More Than Just a Kit! The student kit from the Ohio Energy Project was the springboard that launched us into learning how to save and conserve energy We also learned how to save money while saving energy

Lighting Light Bulbs are important things in our everyday lives There are common kinds of lightbulbs They are incandescent light bulbs IL s compact fluorescent light bulbs CFL s light emitting diodes LED s and fluorescent light bulbs FL s We did an experiment to see which light bulb used the most energy with a radiometer The IL used way more energy than the CFL In addition the IL got really hot while the CFL only got a little warm

lighting--circuit How does a how a light bulb work An IL works by passing electricity through a piece of metal wire called a filament The filament gets so hot that it glows and makes light A CFL and FL work by sending electricity through mercury gas The light that comes out is ultraviolet light which can not be seen to the human eye so a special coat of paint is put on the light bulb which turns it into white light A LED works by passing electricity through a semiconductor which emits light The IL uses the most energy and has the shortest lifespan the CFL and the FL us less energy and last longer and the LED uses very little energy and last for about years

Air Leaks Air leaks are very important to look at and study We made draft meters to help us find air leaks within the school and our homes This is how you can make a draft meter Materials non sharp pencil a ziplock bag and tape Tape your pencil to the ziplock bag to make your draft meter To look for drafts place the draft meter in front of a window or door and look for it to move If it moves there is a draft which indicates an air leak

Insulation Insulation is a very important thing in your home It helps you save on heat and cooling the number one energy waster in your home You should always have insulation in your home First use your draft meter to find air leaks so you know where to install your weather stripping Next install the weather strip by placing the long strip of foam with the sticky side on the window

Heating and Cooling Heating and Cooling are the Energy Wasters in our homes During the heating season your thermostat should be set to F During the cooling season your thermostat should be set to F By doing this your home will not only save energy but money as well

Heating Water Water Heating is the Energy Waster in our homes To test the temperature of your water put hot water in a beaker Then place the thermometer in the beaker and see how hot your water is In order to save energy and money your hot water heater should be set to F

Saving Water Water conservation is very important because it saves water energy and money You can test your shower head by using a flow meter bag If the water is above the Water Sense Guideline you should change to an energy efficient shower head You can also test your faucets with the flow meter bag If your results are above the Water Sence Guideline you should change to an energy efficient faucet

Appliances Appliances use energy Refrigerators should be set to the recommended setting of F Freezers should be set to the recommended setting of F

Types of Energy Through the Ohio Energy Project we learned about the different types of energy They types of energy included natural gas nuclear propane petroleum coal geothermal hydropower solar wind and biomass Coal is used to make most electricity in Ohio

4th Grade TVIS Ohio Energy Project Students The Ohio Energy Project lessons were embedded into the th grade science curriculum Every single th grade student was taught the Ohio Energy Project objectives and installed all parts of the student kits

Student Leaders & Community Education There were a group of students that Mrs Shaw identified as Student Leaders. These students went above and beyond putting the principles they learned into everyday practice In addition they were willing to share what they learned through helping develop this slide show to share with community members
