4 1.0 INTRODUCTION As a requirement of post clearance environmental monitoring for their different mine leases in the districts of Jajpur, Keonjhar and Sundergarh, Orissa Mining Corporation Limited (OMCL), a Government of Orissa undertaking has commissioned MECON Limited, a Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Steel, Govt. of India, for regular post clearance environmental monitoring vide Agreement 2155/OMC/F & E/11 dated It has been planned to carry out environmental monitoring for air, water, noise and soil quality at specified locations and frequencies on monthly basis for twelve months in a year. 2.0 MONITORING DESCRIPTION In order to get an idea about the existing state of the environment, various environmental attributes such as meteorology, air quality, water quality, soil quality and noise level are being studied/monitored. The present report covers environmental data generated for the month of July 2011 in respect of surface/drinking/effluent water quality and ambient/work zone noise levels for Bangur mines in Keonjhar district of Orissa. Air monitoring was not done in this month. Monitoring stations are marked in Drg. MEC/Q6V4/11/S2/RPCMont/Bangur. Sampling and analysis was carried out by Environmental Engineering Laboratory of MECON, Ranchi. 2.1 Water Quality In order to assess existing water quality grab samples were collected from four locations comprising surface water, drinking water and effluent. Locations of water samples are given in Table 1. 5 2.2 Noise Level Noise monitoring was carried out at one ambient location. In addition to this, work zone noise monitoring was also carried out at one location. Noise monitoring stations are shown in Table-2 & 3. Grab samples were collected from the locations indicated in Table 1 and analysed for required parameters. Collection of samples and analyses were carried out following Standard Methods as per APHA hand book. Noise Monitoring Noise monitoring was carried out at the locations indicated in Table 2 & Table 3. Noise levels were measured at hourly intervals for 24 hours in case of ambient noise whereas measurements were carried out for 8 hours at work zone locations. Readings were taken by keeping the sound level meter ON for fifteen (15) minutes for each reading. 4.0 RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS 4.1 Water Quality Monitoring The results of surface water are given in Table 4. The results have been compared with the CPCB norms as depicted in Table 5. From the results 2011 MECON Limited, All right reserved Page 2 of 6

6 it may be seen that water from these sources can be used for drinking purposes after conventional treatment and disinfection. 7 The results of analysis of drinking water are given in Table 6. The results have been compared with the drinking Water Quality standards specified in IS From the results it is obvious that all the parameters meet the prescribed norms except iron, which is exceeding the norm marginally. The results of work zone noise are given in Table 10 and compared with OSHA norms which are mentioned in Table 11.
