1 Career News 2018 Issue 6 - Term 2 Career Advisers Message Are you ready? What are your options? How do you go about finding information about various jobs or further education? This newsletter is here for your convenience it covers all aspects of careers and further educational all in one space. So take advantage and read it from beginning to end to give you some idea of the path you may take. Career Hotspot Locksmith They can specialise in lock manipulation, key manufacture and identification, safe work and automotive work. Work may include domestic, commercial, government, retail and automotive situations. Personal Requirements: enjoy technical work able to cope with the physical demands of the job able to lift heavy items able to work independently or as part of a team attention to detail patience and tact when dealing with customers good vision and hearing good verbal and written communication skills Education and Training: To become a locksmith you usually have to complete an apprenticeship in Lock smithing. Entry requirements may vary, but employers generally require Year 10. Ask your career adviser about the possibility of starting some of this training in school. *Course is offered by more than one institution. Certificate III in Locksmithing In NSW, locksmiths who install security lock systems must undergo a police check before being issued with a security licence. They must also hold, or work under someone who holds, a valid Master Licence issued by the Security Licensing and Enforcement Directorate (SLED), NSW Police Force. Contact SLED for more information. Employment Opportunities: Locksmiths are employed by locksmiths and security firms. There may also be opportunities for selfemployment. Demand is largely dependent on concerns about security and security upgrades involving electrical security, access control and alarm monitoring systems. 5 Schools Visit Day and Careers Adviser Workshop Thursday 5 July 2018 Callaghan Campus and City Precinct 9:00am to 2:30pm Sydney University courses, admission, early entry programs and scholarships. The evening will include formal presentations as well as an informal advising market, where you will have the opportunity to speak to staff about courses and programs. We will also have representatives from the Universities Admissions Centre to discuss all your questions regarding the ATAR and University applications. Students will have the chance to speak to staff and current students, see the campuses, attend a workshop and get a taste of university life. The day will be run at our Callaghan campus with the opportunity for students to travel across on a bus to NeW Space to participate in a tour of this exciting new building. Registrations will be required for these tours, and students are required to travel to NeW Space with their supervising teachers. The Career Advisers Workshop, will be modified to give flexibility to attend a NeW Space tour or experience student sessions. The workshop will be a repeated session in the morning and afternoon with lunch provided. Further event details and RSVP instructions will be sent out this week. Parent Information Evening The Parent Information Evening at Western Sydney University provides parents, guardians and students a chance to find out everything they need to know about university. From discovering the way the ATAR works to speaking with Western Sydney University staff and students one-on-one to learn about the opportunities available for your child, the Parent Information Evening is a great introduction to the exciting journey ahead. Learn more about university and campus life, Western My Gateway is where aspiring apprentices and trainees start their careers and employers access expert help to find, employ and train the right apprentices and trainees for their business. Their role is to provide ongoing support to the apprentice, trainee and their host business from recruitment through to successful completion of their training. They do this by providing ongoing mentoring, support and advice to all parties They help young people launch their careers where they are guaranteed genuine and rewarding employment, correct pay, safe working conditions, paid training and the achievement of a qualification with their course fees paid by us. They re passionate about connecting people with the world of work via pre-apprenticeship courses, high school workshops, Indigenous employment networks and women in non-traditional trade programs. Provisional (P Plates) and Automatic (only) licences will be accepted have a Year 12 education, or Year 10 with a trade certificate or Year 10 with a Cert IV and/or equivalent. Preference will be given to candidates with a Tertiary qualification in technical fields such as; Criminology, Criminal Justice, Law, National Security, Forensic Science, Intelligence and Counter Terrorism, International Security, Information Technology (communications, software, and network specialist. We strongly encourage that in preparation of submitting an application you commence obtaining relevant documentation including: Birth Certificate/ Passport/ Citizenship documents additional proof of gender (if required) traffic history from all states and territories where you have held a drivers licence. 8 Australian School-based Apprenticeships The framework focuses on four fundamental components clarity, collaboration, confidence and core systems to help achieve the vision that all students to have access to quality vocational learning and VET that is integrated into secondary schooling and is valued by students, parents, teachers and employers. The framework was developed by a working group established under the Education Council which includes Education Ministers from all states and territories. Following extensive national consultations the framework was endorsed by the Council in December Preparing Secondary Students for Work Supporting vocational learning and vocational education and training (VET) in secondary school is critical to ensuring students are equipped with the skills that meet the needs of our future workforce. Schools have always prepared students for work, but bringing schools and employers together through quality vocational learning and VET programs can help school graduates meet the higher demands of the workplace and a globally competitive environment. The framework clarifies terminology often associated with VET and outlines the purpose and expected outcomes from VET activities. To see the full copy of the framework, click on the links below. For more information go to The Preparing Secondary Students for Work framework helps to do this by outlining a vision for all students to have access to quality vocational learning and VET that is integrated into secondary schooling and is valued by students, parents, teachers and employers. The framework ensures students are able to gain an understanding of the world of work. It also recognises that VET delivered to secondary students is the same as all other VET. The framework and all the associated resources on this website have been developed by Australian and state and territory governments in partnership with the education and training sector and peak industry bodies. To assist schools to understand and use the framework a range of resources and tools are available. The Preparing Secondary Students for Work - framework is a good guide for schools, helping to make sense of the complex environment in which vocational learning and vocational education and training (VET) is delivered to secondary students.
