1 Employer Survey 2016 Curtis E. Miller, Ph.D. Office of Institutional Research Oklahoma State University Institute of Technology Okmulgee November 1, 2016

2 Executive Summary Introduction This year, 2016, marks the third year of gathering systematic feedback from employers familiar with the work of our graduates. Such research has been identified in the OSUIT Strategic Plan as a crucial need for administrators in making data driven decisions. The 2016 Employer Survey was administered during the 2016 summer semester; results from this survey have been combined with prior results and analyzed for trends. Method Employer Survey forms were sent to all employers identified by students who completed the Graduate Exit Interview or the Graduation Survey during the academic year. Invited to complete the survey were 286 employers; a total of 100 returned surveys for a response rate of 35.0 percent. The current sample included identified supervisors or employers with viable contact information. Each survey mailed to employers identified a single OSUIT graduateemployee as the focus of the employer s ratings. Surveys and invitations mailed to employers also provided a link for completion of the survey online; twelve of the 100 respondents took advantage of completing the survey online. Employers rated graduates on 23 skills (Q12a w) using a five point scale with 1 = Not Competent, 2 = Adequate, 3 = Good, 4 = Competent, and 5 = Very Competent. The results section of this report summarizes responses by combining Good, Competent, and Very Competent ratings into a percentage of all ratings on each skill. There are also four summary items (Q14a d) utilizing a four point scale ranging from Strongly Agree to Strongly Disagree. One additional item (Q13) reflects employers satisfaction with the OSUIT graduate s performance in their organizations using a four point scale ranging from Highly Satisfied to Highly Dissatisfied. Results were summarized to reflect the percentage of employers whose response was Agree/Strongly Agree or Somewhat Satisfied/Highly Satisfied, respectively. Sample Characteristics Most employer respondents (87.0%) were the supervisors of our OSUIT graduates; the remainder were reportedly familiar with the work of the OSUIT graduate without being the graduate s actual supervisor. When asked to indicate their primary company functions, Electrical (Construction) and Automotive Repair & Service led the list reported in this sample. Because of the poor response last year to the follow up question, In which of the following areas do you employ this OSUIT Graduate?, the item was removed from the survey. Employers reported on employment classification of the OSUIT graduates within their organizations; 57.3 percent were hourly employees; 12.5 percent were salaried; 15.6 percent were apprentices, trainees, or interns; none were listed as temporary employees or independent contractors; other employees were categorized either as flat/flag rate (7.3%) or hourly with bonus or commission (4.2%). The remainder (3.1%) were no longer employed or OSUIT Office of Institutional Research 11/1/ of 21

3 otherwise resulted in insufficient data for categorization. Employers reported 93.0 percent of the OSUIT graduates worked full time. Concerning tenure (time on the job), most OSUIT graduates (43.4%) had been employed by the organization between one and three years, and 39.4 percent had been employed for a year or less. A small proportion (17.2%) of OSUIT graduates had been employed for more than three years; this suggests some students had been with their employer prior to their graduation from OSUIT. Median pay range was $40,000 to $44,999. Employers reported pay ranging from a low of less than $10,000 (part time employees only) up to the $65,000 $69,999 range. Employers included internship pay as particular internships continue well beyond graduation. Classification for particular careers was not well defined, such as for employees who earn pay at a flat/flag rate or wait staff pay; these situations reflect certain challenges in gathering pay data that may need to be addressed in future versions of this survey. In terms of how the OSUIT graduates education related to their respective jobs, employers reported the OSUIT graduates education was very closely related (76.3%) to their areas of responsibility within the organization; the remainder (23.7%) reported graduates education as somewhat related. Skills Ratings Employers responding to the survey reported satisfaction with the performance level of OSUIT graduates and primarily rated their competence in their jobs as good, competent, or highly competent. The top five skills possessed by OSUIT graduates as reported by employers were Teamwork, Expertise with Tools, Dependability, Integrity, and Use of Current Technologies. Following is a summary of individual item results. Item Positive Rating Percent Expertise with Tools 97.4% Use of Current Technologies 96.2% Current Knowledge/Methods/Techniques 93.7% Performance of Tasks to Completion 92.5% Customer Service Skills 91.1% Initiative 95.1% Integrity 96.3% Dependability 96.3% Teamwork 97.5% Problem Recognition 92.6% Information Seeking 92.6% Problem solving Skills 92.5% OSUIT Office of Institutional Research 11/1/ of 21

Summary Scale Ratings Employers report a willingness to hire graduates or recommend OSUIT graduates and OSUIT itself to anyone interested in pursuing a degree (see Appendix A for historical comparisons on Skills and Summary items). Summary scale items were as follows: Summary 98.0 percent would hire an OSUIT graduate again (69.4% strongly agree) percent of employers would recommend OSUIT graduates to others (67.3% strongly agree) percent of employers would recommend OSUIT to anyone interested in pursuing a degree (62.5% strongly agree) percent of employers surveyed were satisfied, overall, with OSUIT graduates who came to work for them (62.9% strongly agree). Employers report satisfaction with OSUIT graduates in the workplace. Those supervisors or other individuals familiar with the job duties of these graduates appear ready to recommend both OSUIT and its graduates to others. Further, the employers would hire graduates from OSUIT again. Strengths as identified by these employers include Teamwork (97.5%) and Expertise with tools (97.4%). Likewise, Dependability (96.3%), Integrity (96.3%), and Use of Current Technologies (96.2%) each received high marks among employers. Only one skill, Leadership Skills (86.8%) fell below a 90 percent positive rating. The social and technical skills gained by our graduates, as reflected by the employers who hire them, continue to characterize the OSUIT mission to serve as the lead institution of higher education in Oklahoma and the region providing comprehensive, high quality, advancing technology programs and services to OSUIT Office of Institutional Research 11/1/ of 21
