2 Why have we developed the Certificate? It meets the demand of our 2 customer groups: employers and young people It s been an ask of employers that the public sector does more to prepare young people for work - the CWR meets the needs of all employers to recruit work-ready young people for entry level jobs Young people feel they could be achieving more through work experience to prepare them for work - the CWR enables young people to experience the work place and gain a national award in the process CWR creates a standard that employers can trust as they are central to the assessment of the young person It supports Scottish Government's Opportunities for All and Making Young People Your Business commitments

3 The Certificate is.. A qualification, developed by SDS, to help young people prove to employers that they are work ready A minimum of 190 hours work experience for the young person to complete and additional time spent with a training provider to develop their skills Made up of 5 SQA units including the SDS customised Practical Work Place Skills Unit Employers being central in assessing the young person throughout the work experience SCQF Credit Rated

4 What makes it different? It s a Scotland-wide award Provides a framework for a quality work placement Young people are assessed by the employer on their skills: the Certificate will have traction with other employers across Scotland as it will act like a reference. It is supported and endorsed by employers and employer organisations The work experience element mirrors real employment, not simulated Piloted across Scotland Independently evaluated

6 Practical Work Place Skills What do we mean by a Quality Placement within the context of this Award? We have set specific requirements in relation to 1. The work place environment 2. The terms and conditions of the placement The conditions are not optional they are part of SDS conditions and set the required standards we are looking for

7 Requirements of the work place environment Must be a real place of work where business takes place. This may be in the private, public or third sector Must have paid employees or self-employed individuals Must have appropriate health & safety compliance, insurance and Equality policy in place and be compliant with Scottish employment law College, provider and prison workshops are not considered real in this context.

8 Where we are now 5 pilots across Scotland completed with an independent, positive evaluation Ministerial launch 1 May 2013 Certificate is part of SG s Making Young People Your Business and Opportunities for All commitments Widespread social media and engagement with and through stakeholders and partners to promote launch: local and national press releases Development of support materials, equipping partners and providers to support delivery eg guidance notes, leaflets, pop up banners Support and endorsements secured from employers: public, private and social enterprise/third sector of all sizes Other stakeholders engaged: training providers, business organisations, youth organisations Dedicated CWR team within SDS to continue to develop the certificate and 788 SDS front line staff supporting plus Industry and Enterprise Team Capacity building programme for partners developed: Youth organisations, Local authorities, Colleges, Training Providers, industry and social enterprise sectors

Judith Ackerman The principles and objectives of The Certificate of Work Readiness fits with Scottish Power s desire to attract candidates with knowledge of, and a willingness to embrace, the world of work. Sheila Duncan, HR Director College Development Network welcomes the new SQA Award, Certificate of Work Readiness. This Award, which aims to meet the needs of young people in terms of skills for, and experience of, the workplace; and the needs of employers in developing young people who are work ready, has been successfully piloted involving a number of Colleges. Burns Stewart Distillers are delighted to integrate the Certificate of Work Readiness developed by Skills Development Scotland into their established Modern Apprenticeship programme. CBI Scotland welcomes the launch of the Certificate of Work Readiness (CWR) as a way of helping young people develop these skills in an effective and worthwhile setting whilst being in a position to certify their skills and therefore address employer concerns. 13 Introduction to Work Place Skills Sits at SCQF Level 3 and stage 2 of the pipeline. SCQF Credit Rated 150 hours work experience compared to the CWR 190 hours Placement can be delivered over extended timeframe, may be suitable for use in schools as part of a complementary curriculum Placement type can be more flexible (protected environment/voluntary sectors etc) Same assessment criteria as Certificate of Work Readiness
