2 In 21st century, skills and knowledge will drive force of economic growth and social development. Countries with higher and better levels of skills adjust more effectively to the challenges and opportunities of the world of work Although India is the youngest nation in the world with more than 60 per cent of its population under 30 years of age, it is unfortunate that only 2 per cent is trained with vocational skills. This is in sharp contrast to countries like Korea, which has 96 per cent population trained in vocational skills, and Japan and European countries like Germany and France where more than 80 professionals are trained with technical skills. To boost the economy of India the Government of India had stared campaigning like Make In India, Digital India, & Clean India but without Skilling India its not possible to achieve the expect goals. Time is running out for India; Enhancing the skill development & employability is a priority for India to achieve the set goals. With over 130 million youth expected to join the workforce by the year 2022, India needs to provide skills of various trades and occupations to nearly 500 million or over 40 pc of its total population in the next seven years.

3 India has seen rapid growth in recent years, driven by the growth in new-age industries. However, there is a large shortage of skilled manpower in the country. In the wake of the changing economic environment, it is necessary to focus on inculcating and advancing the skill sets of the young population of the country India lags far behind in imparting skill training as compared to other countries. Only 10% of the total workforce in the country receive some kind of skill training (2% with formal training and 8% with informal training). Further, 80% of the entrants into the workforce do not have the opportunity for skill training Need for Skill Development Series 1 Korea Japan Germany UK India Percentage of worforce receiving skill training In India there is a huge mismatch between the current education and the skill sets that the industry and business needs, meaning that even though millions of students complete their education each year, few of them are adequately skilled to get a job for which they are supposed to have been trained. According to a survey only 2 percent of the country s workforce is skilled which is much lower when compared to the developing nations; there is a dual challenge of developing skills and utilizing them in a proper way.

4 In India there is a huge mismatch between the current education and the skill sets that the industry and business needs, meaning that even though millions of students complete their education each year, few of them are adequately skilled to get a job for which they are supposed to have been trained. Industry & Academics-have both realized that the gap in the supply of employable manpower can not be bridged without their close co operation & continued engagement. However the effective interface has not emerged inspite of all well meant discussions; is only partially effective at the implementation level & the output of mid segment colleges continues to be woefully out of sync with industry expectations.
