1 JOB DESCRIPTION Job Title: HR Advisor Job Ref: HRS105 Campus: Hendon Grade: Grade 6 Salary: Period: Reporting to: Reporting to Job Holder: 30,688-35,194 per annum inclusive of OLW Permanent HR Business Partner No direct reports. Overall Job Purpose: To support and work alongisde the HR Business Partner in providing a professional consultancy service to managers on all aspects of HR and specifically employee relations matters. To act as first contact adviser and co-ordinator on School and or, Service based recruitment activity (permanent and temporary) as well as provide advice on other University policies and procedures. To work closely with the HRSS team to ensure that recruitment and other activities are handled proficiently To participate in activities and projects undertaken by the Director of Human Resources or the Deputy Director of Human Resources as directed by the HRBP including activities to support the:- o auditing and monitoring the effectiveness of HR strategies and practices, looking for continuous improvements o auditing and reviewing, pay and grading and other HR Management information in the context of workforce planning Principal Duties: 1. Provision of advice to School and Service based senior management on staff conditions of service, local working practices and the University s HR policies and procedures. 2. Support and complement the work of the HR Business Partner to ensure comprehensive advice to managers at each stage of the University s HR employee relations procedures and processes.

2 3. Assess absence and attendance data, acting as the first stage support for managers, monitoring and addressing attendance performance concerns to enable performance targets to be achieved. Coaching managers as appropriate. 4. Support the HR Business Partner with appeals, complaints and employment tribunals, ensuring effective liaison with all parties. 5. Assist with the local embedding of new HR policies and practices, monitoring the effectiveness of their communication, local compliance and flagging any areas that could benefit from review and or modification. 6. Liaise with the trade unions on individual casework and or projects, as directed by the HR Business Partner or Deputy Director of HR. 7. Support local managers in respect of their recruitment requirements, providing advice and ensuring that each stage of the recruitment process is effectively administered, providing training and coaching as appropriate to managers and staff as appropriate.this to include: Undertaking job analysis and job evaluation; ensuring that issues of consistency and equal value are observed. Providing advice on the most effective or appropriate way for filling vacancies Advising on the requirements for pre-recruitment authority and on the wording of adverts. Advising on short listing and acting in support of recruitment interviewing and other selection methods where required. Overseeing that the requirements for pre-employment checks and references are understood and that the HR Shared Service receives all the necessary approvals and information in good time. Overseeing the issuing of hourly paid contracts, ensuring appropriate right to work checks are undertaken Acting as a DBS counter-signatory Provide PAFIS training to staff as required, updating and reviewing training materials 8. Actively contribute to the continuous improvement of HRS through the use of performance data / indicators and implementation of process improvements identified by the team. 9. To undertake other duties commensurate with the overall purpose of the role from time to time as determined by the Deputy Director of Human Resource Services and HR BP. Hours: 35.5 hours per week. Actual daily hours by arrangement.

3 PERSON SPECIFICATION Job Title: HR Advisor Campus: Hendon Grade: Grade 6 Criteria Essential Desirable Education/ Qualifications Experience Knowledge Skills and Behaviours Grad CIPD or working towards with a commitment to continuous professional development. A level or equivalent Exposure within an administrative environment where the requirement to manage conflicting deadlines and meet deadlines were essential. Prior experience of working in resource administration and or employee relations. Experience of providing support and guidance to managers across a range of HR policies and procedures. Exposure to the principles involved in managing or advising on HR employee relations casework. Working as an effective member of a team. Working knowledge of key employment legislation. Clear understanding of HR practices and policies, their formation and purpose. Proficient with IT including MS Office applications, and HR system. Able to work with tact and diplomacy and work independently. MCIPD or working towards MCIPD Understanding of the uses of HR Management information. Experience of working in an HE setting.

4 Good organisational skills, attention to detail with the ability to prioritise a heavy workload with a minimum of supervision and to work to tight deadlines. Ability to understand management business priorities and requirements and to support their achievement. Understanding of the benefits and principles of using KPIs and data to highlight problems and opportunities for improved service delivery Ability to assess problems at an operational level and develop a range of business focused solutions. Takes responsibility for outcomes, consistently being proactive and results focused. Good written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present information clearly. Annual Leave: 30 days per annum plus eight Bank Holidays and seven University days taken at Christmas (pro rata for part-time staff) which may need to be taken as time off in lieu. Flexibility: Please note that given the need for flexibility in order to meet the changing requirements of the University, the duties and location of this post and the role of the post-holder may be changed after consultation. The balance of duties may vary over time and will be reviewed as part of the appraisal process.
