2 Nicholls State University Vision: Nicholls State University will be the institution of choice for students in the service region and beyond as a result of the quality of programs, the dedication to individual student needs, and the national recognition of unique programs and services. Nicholls State University Mission: Nicholls State University is a student-centered regional institution dedicated to the education of a diverse student body in a culturally rich and engaging learning environment through quality teaching, research, and service. Nicholls supports the educational, cultural, and economic needs of its service region and cultivates productive, responsible, and engaged citizens. Goals: I. Increase the level of educational attainment for students. I-a. Increase student retention I-b. Increase enrollment of diverse populations I-c. Increase the six-year graduation rate of bachelor s degree seeking students, as defined by federal standards. I-d. Work with institutions in our region to increase participation in post-secondary education I-e. Continue implementation, development and promotion of the Quality Enhancement Plan, which includes student and faculty engagement, and critical thinking through critical inquiry and writing. II. Cultivate research that engages faculty and students seeking knowledge in areas of common interest. II-a. Administration will seek and support faculty engagement in research. II-b. Invest in research through matching funds, supported travel and publishing support. II-c. Engage industry and business relationships in partnership to secure diverse research opportunities. II-d. Recognize and Encourage faculty, graduate and undergraduate students who have contributed significantly throughout the year. III. Achieve greater accountability, efficiency, and effectiveness across campus. III-a. Enhance opportunities for distance learning. III-b. Increase student awareness of and exposure to the global environment. III-c. Support excellence in teaching and service III-d. Develop unique niches in primary programs III-e. Offer master s level programs in nursing and English.

3 IV. Continue the university s collaboration with business, education, and service entities to meet regional workforce needs and to provide cultural enrichment and service to the community. IV-a. Enhance collaboration with community and technical colleges IV-b. Enhance relationships with advisory groups across disciplines to better meet workforce needs IV-c. Continue collaboration with local school districts to improve college-going rate IV-d. Continue existing and build new relationships with regional service institutes, such as South Louisiana Economic Council, Barataria-Terrebonne National Estuary, etc. IV-e. Encourage continued service-learning and community service projects. V. Invest strategically in university employees to enhance customer service and sense of pride in the university. V-a. Focus resources on recruitment and retention of quality personnel in all areas. V-b. Begin a customer service initiative, with emphasis placed on treatment of all constituents, both fellow employees and students.

4 Assessment Plan: Calendar Year 2014 Department: Human Resources Mission: The mission of the Human Resources Department is to support the mission and goals of Nicholls State University by providing services that promote a work environment that is characterized by fair treatment of faculty and staff, open communication, personal accountability, trust, and mutual respect. We will seek and provide solutions to workplace issues that support and optimize the operating principles of the university in the most efficient manner. Row 1 Program Outcome 1: Develop and implement additional ways to recognize employees and increase their engagement in and loyalty to Nicholls. Row Strategic Plan Alignment: V-a Row 3 Assessment Methods and Targets: Development and implementation of 1-2 additional employee recognition initiatives. Row 4 Results: Budgetary and staffing constraints inhibited the implementation of any new initiatives. Row 5 Use of Results: Continue to develop ideas/initiatives with employee input and have them ready to implement when the budget situation improves.

5 Assessment Plan: Calendar Year 2014 Department: Human Resources Mission: The mission of the Human Resources Department is to support the mission and goals of Nicholls State University by providing services that promote a work environment that is characterized by fair treatment of faculty and staff, open communication, personal accountability, trust, and mutual respect. We will seek and provide solutions to workplace issues that support and optimize the operating principles of the university in the most efficient manner. Row 1 Program Outcome 2: Develop and implement employee training and education series. Row Strategic Plan Alignment: III-c, V-a, V-b Row 3 Assessment Methods and Targets: Development of a training series specifically for supervisors which address issues such as employee discipline, recognition, management, and leadership. Development of a customer service training series for all employees. Row 4 Results: Staffing constraints within the department did not allow for the time needed to properly develop and implement these training objectives. Row 5 Use of Results: This objective will be revisited once the department is staffed at a level capable of producing quality training materials and presentations.

We will seek and provide solutions to workplace issues that support and optimize the operating principles of the university in the most efficient manner. Row 1 Row 2 Program Outcome 3: Develop and train new Human Resources department staff Strategic Plan Alignment: III-c, V-a Row 3 Assessment Methods and Targets: Completion of orientation and training for all Human Resources staff. Ability of said staff to perform key duties with minimal supervision. Row 4 Results: Human Resources staff is in place and performing key and routine tasks with minimal supervision; however, due to the department still being understaffed, issues remain related to slow response times. Row 5 Use of Results: The department is in need of 2-3 more employees in order to be adequately staffed to perform at the desired level; however, budgetary issues are hindering this need. The department will continue to request the additional, needed positions should the budget forecast improve. Additionally, the exit of all key HR personnel in 2013 led to a significant loss of institutional knowledge within the department; this knowledge is not easily recoverable and remains an on-going development area.
