3 Letter from the Head of Service Development Dear Potential Colleague, We re the only UK charity looking after the nation s lungs. Can you help us make sure that one day everyone breathes clean air with healthy lungs? Having lung disease brings questions and anxiety about the future. We don't want anyone to face that alone. Our helpline, support groups, web community and easy-to-understand information offers vital hope and support. We know that empowering people with the skills and confidence to manage their own respiratory condition is one of the most important factors in ensuring improvements in wellbeing and long term health gains. The role of Physical Activity & Behaviour Change Lead will play a key part in making this happen. We are looking for a friendly, self-motivated and enthusiastic person with experience of physical activity and behaviour change as a means to empowering and supporting patients to self-manage their condition. 4 Introduction to BLF Lung disease affects more than 12 million people across the UK. We are leading the fight against lung disease to make sure no one has to face it alone. We promote greater understanding of lung disease and campaign for change in the nation s lung health. Additionally, we fund vital research so that new treatments and cures can help to save lives. Context of Work One person in five in the UK is affected by lung disease. As the only UK charity for people affected by all lung and respiratory disease from mild asthma through to lung cancer the British Lung Foundation (BLF) is here for every one of them. We are leading the fight against lung disease by providing support, funding vital research, and campaigning for better prevention, treatment and care. 5 Working for us The BLF has approximately 90 staff, of which around 50 staff are based in the BLF Head Office based in Goswell Road, London. Teams in this office include fundraising, communications & marketing and corporate services. Some of our projects and services staff are also based here. In Liverpool we have BLF Direct which provides our telephone and support services and looks after our Breathe Easy patient support network.15 staff are based in this office. We also have small offices in Glasgow (covering Scotland and Northern Ireland) and Cardiff where small teams (four people in each office) provide local influencing in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. Other staff are home based so that they can deliver local projects or influence local NHS services.

7 Job overview We have an exciting opportunity for a Physical Activity & Behaviour Change Lead to work with us to ensure that self-management and behaviour change is fully embedded within our organisational strategy. We are looking for a friendly, self-motivated and enthusiastic person with experience of physical activity and behaviour change as a means to empowering and supporting patients to selfmanage their condition. The post-holder will also act as a subject matter expert for physical activity, self-management and behaviour change and lead on the development on new activities and projects. It is essential to be able to work without direct supervision, prioritise work and deal with competing and conflicting demands in an organised and effective manner. 8 Person specification Position title: Physical Activity & Behaviour Change Lead Reports to: Head of Service Development Location: London, EC1V No. of hours: Full-time, 36 hours per week Period of employment: Permanent Salary guideline: Circa 39,000 per annum (dependent on experience) Overall purpose of the job Lead the BLF work on physical activity and behaviour change Ensure that self-management and behaviour change is fully embedded within our strategy, planning, activities and services Act as subject matter expert for physical activity, self-management and behaviour change Lead on the development of new physical activity and behaviour change activities to feed into our project pipeline Key Responsibilities Service delivery Provide advice and support around self-management and behaviour change to a range of existing projects, including BLF active, Breathe Easy, singing etc to ensure maximum impact Develop and delivery training in behaviour change techniques to support project delivery Work with services within the BLF to identify opportunities to empower users to self-manage Support with the review and revision of relevant patient information Develop and support the delivery of self-management training for HCPs Initiate the delivery of key projects Subject matter expert Support colleagues across the Support & Services Directorate team to enable them to successfully understand, communicate and deliver our physical activity and behaviour change activities Support and work with the Service Development Managers across the UK to ensure selfmanagement is built into local pathways Provide content expertise to a range of self-management publications Build a knowledge bank of relevant evidence and patient story case studies Build external networks of key stakeholders to support our work Service development Develop fundable proposals for new, evidence based projects and activities that support physical activity, self-management and behaviour change Work with fundraising teams to develop funding opportunities and support relationships with funders Support the Business Development team to develop and deliver commercially viable selfmanagement and behaviour change products and services Research, develop and implement plans for the BLF to ensure people with lung disease have access to physical activity opportunities at each stage of their pathway Education & Training Masters level degree or equivalent in relevant subject (desirable) Qualification in behaviour change (desirable) blf.org.uk 8

9 Person specification Skills & Experience Essential Experience and understanding of the issues around physical activity, behaviour change and self-management Ability to build, develop and maintain complex relationships with key stakeholders, service providers, including people affected by lung disease, healthcare professionals, and other external support organisations Excellent written communication skills in order to produce concise reports, project briefs (internal and external) and proposals Confidence and experience in presenting to large audiences Experience and understanding of evaluation methods including the theory of change model and patient outcome measures Knowledge of current health and social care priorities Development and hands on delivery of training programmes Experience of developing and managing budgets Desirable Writing content for patient information Knowledge of NHS structures Ability to analyse, plan and carry out complex tasks, organise and deliver projects to deadlines Proven experience in overseeing the management of cross-organisational projects including outcomes and risk management Personal attributes Enthusiasm and willingness to be flexible in achieving targets and outcomes Self-starter, happy to work in teams and independently Support diversity and equality of opportunity in the workplace Commitment to the Charity and its values Other requirements Some travel to other UK locations (including other BLF offices) as required by the charity Awareness of, and comfort with, BLF funding medical research which may on occasion involve animal research Non-smoker, due to the nature of the BLF s work Flexibility and willingness to work outside normal office hours when the occasion demands, including some weekends This Job Description is illustrative and non-exhaustive in scope.
