1 POSITION DESCRIPTION Revision Date: 04/05/2018 Prepared by: Hannah Kennedy Position Title: Provider Strength & Conditioning NSW Winter Sports Reports to: Responsible for: Functional Budget: Location/s: OWIA Lead Physical Preparation Coach Winter Sports NSW based Winter Sports Athletes N/A Principal locations: NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) Homebush/Narrabeen, NSW Jindabyne Sport & Recreation Centre Jindabyne, NSW Other sports venues as required Employed By: Employment Status: OWIA Full Time Organisational Context The Olympic Winter Institute of Australia (OWIA) works in partnership with the NSW Institute of Sport (NSWIS) to support Australian athletes to become world s best. The OWIA operates high performance programs on behalf of National Federations in selected Olympic Winter Games program sports with the aim to develop and prepare elite Australian winter sport athletes for competition in Olympic Winter Games, World Championship and World Cup events. Performance is at the centre of all that we do, and our coaches and performance staff foster an athlete centric approach to collaboratively support the achievement of high performance outcomes. Primary Purpose of Position The primary responsibilities of the role are: Providing world best performance support in the area of Strength & Conditioning to athletes and coaches as a part of integrated performance team/s for winter sports Adopting and promoting a collaborative approach to planning, preparation and performance that optimises expertise to close gaps to performance Achieving consistent alignment of OWIA/NSWIS planning, delivery & monitoring frameworks, and technology platforms internally with staff & coaches and externally with sport & system partners Role and Responsibilities

2 The Provider Strength & Conditioning NSW Winter Sports will provide: High level strength and conditioning programs specific to the unique requirements of the individual sport disciplines (ie. mogul skiing, snowboard cross, ski cross, park & pipe, other snow sport and ice sports) Delivery of strength and conditioning programs within the training environment as required Key Challenges Working in a fast paced, complex multi sport and multi discipline high performance environment. Working within a restricted resource environment. Working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders and varying agendas. Working across multiple locations, requiring travel both interstate (and internationally if required). Adapting to ways of working that includes cross discipline delivery of performance support requiring close liaison with discipline expertise KEY RELATIONSHIPS Who Why OWIA Lead Physical To contribute to a nationally aligned coordination and delivery of world class Preparation Coach strength and conditioning programming Winter Sports OWIA & NSWIS Staff & To work collaboratively to support, enable and impact performance together Managers Winter Sport Athletes To support individual athlete performance planning and implementation Coaches To support the delivery of high performance sport programs Performance Team To support an integrated performance approach and collaboratively prepare World s Best athletes Sport To align with national performance priorities NIN To enhance collaboration within the National system KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES Operational Deliver Performance Planning Support Direct Delivery Daily Training Environment (including culture, services and camps) Description As a member of the performance team work collaboratively with the coach to, analyse needs of athlete and sport, set appropriate performance goals, develop plans, monitor and implement these plans and review periodically. As a member of the OWIA performance support network actively align with the strategy, direction and best practice principles set out by the sport Collaborates with the Performance Team to develop, implement and monitor: Shared and live holistic Individual Athlete Performance Plans Shared and live holistic sport specific Service Plans Holistic Annual & Quadrennial Periodised Plans targeting sport identified specific BME objectives Promote/support a winning culture and commit to continuous learning within the program Develop and implement a screening, testing and monitoring approach aligned to NSO needs, inclusive of regular reporting to athletes, coach and performance support staff Regularly attend DTE training sessions, camps and competitions to support an integrated approach to performance support needs Operations and Reporting Assist in the maintenance and operation of Performance Support facilities, equipment, services & staff to ensure the unit remains at the forefront in Australian & International sport Support and/or establish, implement and maintain quality data capture, analysis and reporting process using AMS as the primary platform in support of sport, discipline and organisational performance outcomes Page 2 of 5

3 Coordinate facilities/ resource Undertake administrative duties Attend formal meetings Manage issues professionally HP reporting update required components with quality input Staff Professional Planning Meet with management and/or senior staff to discuss performance, monitor progress and consider future requirements Commit to developing an individual action plan and delivering on the agreed professional development plan General Represent OWIA/NSWIS/winter sports as required Work collaboratively with other functional areas towards organisational and sport outcomes Adhere to all the OWIA and NSWIS policies and procedures, particularly Code of Conduct Reflect the shared OWIA and NSWIS values in everyday work environment Comply with WHS legislation, company WHS policies, objectives and procedures. Contribute and participate in the health and safety of all staff, visitors and contractors. Communicate clear information and instructions to other team members Helps High Performance teams achieve goals by sharing information, involving team members in decisions, and demonstrating commitment to the team Anticipates problems or opportunities and take immediate action to address them Is proactive with input into & assist in the development of scientific principles designed to test & monitor athletes for improved athletic performance Under the guidance of the Senior, supervise or assist in the supervision of other staff or casual employees who provide performance support to NSWIS and/or National Sports Programs to ensure high quality service provision. Provide advice to athletes and coaches. Clearly communicate advice to athletes and coaches in a way that engages them and helps them apply what they learn Create a strong first impression by communicating confidently and exhibiting a professional demeanour Utilise appropriate forums & technologies to provide coaches & athletes with information that can positively impact on training & competition performance Contribute to the development of coaches & development of resources to allow coaches to better utilise the services of the OWIA to positively impact athlete performance Maintain a high level of personal knowledge growth to ensure the methods utilised in performance support reflect current knowledge and practice and are relevant to the agreed needs of NSO strategy and local NSW based coaches & athletes Page 3 of 5

4 Analyst (Information) Communicate best practice learnings across the sport, discipline and organisation to leverage knowledge growth across the Australian sporting system Draw conclusions and makes recommendations based on qualitative or quantitative information Proactively gather and quickly absorb and analyse new information from a variety of sources, detecting trends, associations, and cause effect relationships and applies this for decision making Under the guidance of the Senior, recommends the most effective course of action after evaluating options against decision criteria Be proactive with input into and assist in the development of scientific principles designed to test & monitor athletes for improved athletic performance Provide athletes and coaches with assistance & guidance in the analysis & interpretation of test results and the practical application of the results SUCCESS PROFILE Experience & Skills 3+ years experience in the provision and application of strength & conditioning services 1+ years experience in multiple high performance sport environments Proven success in utilizing S&C knowledge in planning, periodising and managing athletes across seasons/campaigns at senior National or International level Proven success in utilizing a holistic approach to planning and monitoring athletic performance to achieve performance progression Demonstrated ability and commitment to work in a multi disciplinary/sport team environment Ability to analyse data, interpret results and produce reports for coaches and athletes for informing athletic training programs Experience in meeting quality control and quality assurance standards Ability to travel domestically and internationally as required to support athletes, programs and attend events Knowledge Relevant tertiary qualification Sport & Exercise Science undergraduate degree (post graduate qualifications are desirable) ASCA Level 2 / PCAS Professional qualification Understanding of theory and modern coaching philosophies and the application of such for the development of high performance training programs Knowledge and understanding of the maintenance and technical operation of a variety of sport science equipment Understanding of strategic planning Intermediate/Advanced knowledge of MS Office and other sports specific computer programs (SmartaBase) ASADA Level 2 First Aid and Resuscitation Certificate Current driver s licence Working with Children Check CORE COMPETENCIES No Competence Description 1 Innovation Continually employs originality and inventiveness to generate new ideas, alternatives, processes and solutions; always challenges the status quo, hold a continuous improvement mindset Page 4 of 5
