Each class session is 120 minutes in length. The course meets from Monday to Friday. Each course has a total of 56 class hours (4 credit hours). Course Description Accounting is the process of accumulating, measuring, recording, and communicating economic information. This course introduces you to managerial accounting concepts and techniques and provides an understanding of how managers within an organization use accounting information in order to plan operations, control activities, and make decisions. Unlike financial accounting, which is primarily concerned with producing financial information for external users, this course focuses on information generated by internal accounting information systems. Well-designed managerial accounting systems will maximize profits and investment return to business owners. Course Learning Objectives 1. To understand how managerial accounting and financial accounting differ and the role of managerial accounting in costing a company s products or services. 2. To understand how accounting information is used to make decisions for the firm, improving its operational efficiency and increasing its profits. 3. To understand how accounting information can be used to evaluate the performance of managers at all levels of an organization. 4. To understand concepts, and not rely on memorization, so that one can use the topics/information in new situations, in other courses and in one s professional career. Topics include understanding inventory cost flow, cost behavior, cost-volume-profit

2 analysis, job order or process costing, activity-based costing, absorption and variable costing, standard costing, flexible budgets, overhead analysis, relevant decision analysis, and measuring performance and investments. Method of Instruction Class time will include lecture, problem solving and Q&A. Class assignments will include readings and problems. Students are expected to complete assignments and participate in class. We will cover a significant amount of material during the course and the concepts in each chapter build on the concepts discussed in the previous chapter. Required Textbook Hilton & Platt, Managerial Accounting, 10th edition Classroom All cellular phones must be turned off and stored before entering the classroom. Attendance Class attendance is expected. Please be on time to each class meeting. Because it is important to your success, I will record attendance.
