1 Role Title Business Development Manager Education and Society Role Information Role Type Pay Band Location Duration Reports to: Business Development Band 7 Seoul, Korea Indefinite Director Education and Society Role purpose To provide strategic leadership for the Education and Society work of the British Council in Korea, in alignment with NE Asia cluster, regional and global priorities, with the aim of strengthening the relationship between the two countries in these fields. To develop business, build partnership, and manage programmes and services provided to audience and stakeholders in UK and in Korea. As a cluster, these are our joint objectives in Education and Society. - Mobility of students, academics, teaching professionals and scientists in higher education - Higher education joint research, collaboration, programmes and exchanges, particularly around ageing, including product design - UK professional qualifications - Social Enterprise legislation and policy - Mainstreaming social enterprise in education The Education and Society team in British Council Korea has 8 members of staff, 5 full-time and 3 part-time. Main opportunities/challenges for this role: Postholder s ability to research and monitor the changing trends and relevant government initiatives in the higher education and research sector and identify areas for possible Korea-UK collaboration will be key to the success Posthoder s role in identifying the needs and priorities of potential clients and partners and creating shared purposes and objectives among various stakeholders will be the key challenge as well as crucial to the success of the business Strong written/verbal communication and influencing skills to build buy-in in rapidly changing internal and external context will also be important success/challenge factors Main Accountabilities: Strategic Planning (10%) Work with Director Education and Society in developing a coherent and sustainable Education and Society strategy for Korea in line with the global and regional priorities, incorporating Korea s experience, priorities and market factors. Strengthen the international profile and engagement of the UK s Education and Society sector through building effective partnerships between individuals and organisations in the UK and Korea. Work closely and collaboratively with North East Asia Cluster lead and country leads, as well as other teams in the Korea operation to maximize efficiencies and opportunities, and to respond jointly to common issues. 2 [Insert job title] [Insert date prepared] The British Council

3 Business Development and Partnership (50%) Monitor key sector trends in Korea and in the UK; gather and analyse intelligence on client strategies, potential partners and competitors and link that to opportunities for British Council Korea. Identify new clients and partners and develop new businesses and partnership opportunities for British Council to ensure it achieves financial sustainability as well as impact Contribute to collation and coordination of proposals for client-funded competitive tenders and direct contracting Maintain and strengthen key relationships stated below Project Planning (30%) Lead on start-ups of programmes funded by clients and partners, ensuring they meet the objectives and standards of funding partners Ensure programme activities achieve desired outcome and impact for the British Council s Education and Society SBU Oversee the design and delivery of projects for quality assurance Manage and monitor programme budget, including cash income from partners and clients, and carry out duties in accordance with OM (Operation Manager) role on British Council s finance system (5%) Line manage 2 members of the Education and Society SBU to corporate standards of performance management and strong team working (5%) Key Relationships: Internal Country Director, Director Education and Society, all other SBUs of British Council Korea Regional education and society leads, education and society advisors at British Council global team, Education leads from Cluster countries External Government and government-funded agencies : Ministry of Education, Ministry of Science ICT and Future Planning, provincial and metropolitan offices of education and training institutes, city governments, Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and ICT, Korea Social Enterprise Promotion Agency, Korea Institute for Design Promotion, etc. Education and research institutes : Education institutions(mainly universities) in Korea and in the UK, public and private research institutes Private sector partners : International and Korean companies with relevant business and CSR objectives Role Requirements: Threshold requirements: Assessment stage Passport requirements/ Right to work in country Direct contact or managing staff working with children?
