We are a national charity whose purpose is to improve life for everyone affected by Crohn s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis (collectively known as Inflammatory Bowel Disease or IBD). These lifelong and debilitating conditions affect over 300,000 people in the UK with nearly half of those being diagnosed each year under the age of 29. Our work covers a broad range of activities designed to achieve a better quality of life, improve support and services and, ultimately, find a cure. We are seeking to recruit a full-time Publications Officer to cover maternity leave on a six-month, fixed-term contract with the possibility to extend. The role will support the Information and Support Services team in the production of more than 40 information sheets, booklets and guides about all aspects of Crohn s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. We pride ourselves in producing publications of the highest quality for anyone affected by these conditions, including patients, friends, family, medical professionals and employers. The successful candidate will be responsible for producing easy-to-understand health information to support those affected, so that they have the information they need, at the right time and in the format of their choice. Many of our offerings are done according to the rigorous national Information Standard guidelines. The successful candidate also may be involved in video and digital projects, and will be expected to occasionally attend events where we provide information to patients and/or health professionals. 4 Publications Officer Grade: C Reporting to: Publications and Information Manager Overall purpose To support the Information and Support Services team in the production and development of Crohn s and Colitis UK publications. This includes our high-quality patient information, research summaries, and other publications to help support everyone affected by Crohn s and Colitis. The role may include work on other information products for patients and health professionals, such as video scripts. Key Responsibilities: To maintain and develop processes to ensure that Crohn's and Colitis UK remains an accredited information provider under the Information Standard ( This includes: - Review and update existing Crohn s and Colitis UK publications to ensure they are accurate and up to date in line with Crohn s and Colitis UK s policies, and in consultation with the Publications and Information Manager, independent Editorial Board, medical professionals, Crohn s and Colitis UK staff, patients and other relevant specialists and organisations. - Produce new information material in written, digital or other appropriate formats to ensure people affected by IBD have the information they need in the format of their choice, in line with Crohn's and Colitis UK's policies and the requirements of the Information Standard. Lead on specific projects that involve external stakeholders to take forward any relevant new information material. - Document all reviews and updates to publications in order to ensure that we continually maintain our Information Standard accreditation. To work with the Publications and Information Manager to develop new ways for patients and the public to access Crohn's and Colitis UK information and publications, for example using digital, video and social networking platforms. Support the Communications team and other teams to promote our patient information. Oversee and guide freelance writers on our information production processes to meet the Information Standard. Answer queries on information in our publications, with support from the Publications and Information Manager and the other Publications Officer. These may come from the general public, members of the charity, health professionals and staff who receive enquiries through our Information Line and social media. Implement any amendments or changes to our publications in light of feedback. Support the Publications and Information Manager to strategically plan and arrange the design and printing of our publications to serve members, our online ordering system for health professionals, and events. Work with the Digital Manager to develop and maintain Crohn's and Colitis UK's information and publications pages on the Crohn's and Colitis UK website, in line with agreed policies. Page 5 of 8

5 Support the research department and others in the organisation with any writing and editing needs, such as research summaries, volunteer newsletters or reviews of grant applications. Keep up-to-date with relevant information and research on Inflammatory Bowel Disease, through reading medical and other professional journals and attending conferences, identifying gaps/possibilities for Crohn s and Colitis UK publications and ways of distributing or disseminating information about IBD. To maintain, with the Publications and Information Manager, and the Helplines Manager, Crohn's and Colitis UK's collection of resource materials relating to information and support for Inflammatory Bowel Disease. This involves: Identifying appropriate research and other published reports or articles for inclusion in the resource library and for use in updating the information we provide. Information sharing with the information team and other staff and volunteers as appropriate. To attend and assist at any meetings or events as may reasonably be required by the Publications and Information Manager. This may include providing information at patient days at hospitals, and charity events for Crohn s and Colitis UK. PLEASE NOTE: The charity will be moving from St. Albans to lovely new offices in Hatfield in 2018, mostly likely during the six-month initial term of this role. The purpose of this job description is to focus attention on the most important aspects of the jobholder s role. 6 Page 7 of 8 Skills, Knowledge & Experience Experience Experience of researching medical-based information and writing health, care or support information for different audiences, from the research stage to writing and external review. Experience of translating complex medical and health information into easy to understand, engaging and accessible patient information. Experience of working to brand and information production guidelines. Experience of working on both web-based and printed content, including liaising with designers and printers. Experience of managing own workload to meet deadlines. Knowledge Working knowledge of the Information Standard. Relevant degree (or equivalent qualification) in a science subject, or substantial experience in the provision of health-based information. Skills Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to liaise with a range of stakeholders. Attention to detail and high level of accuracy. Highly organised and efficient with the ability to manage a wide range of tasks and work well under pressure. Experience of using In Design, or savvy enough to learn the basics quickly. Ability to promote patient information to a wide range of audiences. Attitudes Calm, consistent and flexible approach to work. A commitment to the principles and objectives of Crohn s and Colitis UK, being able to represent the Charity professionally both internally and externally. A commitment to excellent team working, including helping colleagues, communicating frequently and changing course quickly if a more pressing matter demands attention.

7 Salary A competitive salary which is reviewed annually. Our annual salary review takes into account a number of factors, including an individual s contribution and performance against objectives. New recruits are automatically enrolled into our Group Personal Pension Plan. We offer two levels of contribution: Employer contribution% of basic annual salary Length of pension membership Employee Contribution% of basic annual salary 5% On joining the scheme 3% 8% After 6 months the member can choose to move up to this band or stay on the initial rates 5% Hours of work The standard working week at Crohn s and Colitis UK is 35 hours and start and finish times can be agreed between the employee and their manager. In addition, a number of roles are undertaken on a part-time basis. Holiday entitlement The basic holiday entitlement is 25 days leave per year, increasing by one day for each year s service up to a maximum of 5 days, giving a total of 30 days in addition the 8 bank holiday days. The holiday year runs from January to December each year. Season ticket loans We appreciate that travel to and from work can be expensive and that buying annual tickets can mean savings for our employees. We therefore offer an interest free loan for season tickets, repaid directly from salary each month. Our office Our informal, open plan office space has been designed to create a vibrant and productive workspace for all our staff. Our office is less than a 20-minute train ride from London St Pancras followed by a short five minute walk from the station. A free secure entry-controlled car park is available to staff members, along with cycle racks for the more energetic. We will be relocating to Hatfield (AL10) in 2018 due to the expiry of our lease.
