2 Position Description POSITION TITLE: CUTTER - 12 Month Contract 1. KEY ROLE: The Cutter is responsible for the interpretation of costume designs to meet the designer s needs and for cutting, fitting and constructing costumes. This position is deputy to the Gentlemen s Cutter. This role assists the Gentlemen s Cutter position and is non-touring however, on occasion, interstate or overseas travel is required. 2. CULTURE / ENVIRONMENT: The Gentlemen s and Ladies Cutters are part of a dedicated and talented team of permanent and casual costumiers and milliners who make up the Production Wardrobe department. The numbers employed vary according to the requirements of the particular ballet in production and the timeline for completion. As artisans working as part of a team to realise the vision of a designer, the wardrobe staff work in a constantly pressured environment and meet multiple deadlines in any given year. There is an emphasis on quality as well as speed so that costumes are completed on time and to a high standard. The wardrobe production department, administration offices, music department and rehearsal studios are located at The Australian Ballet Centre, 2 Kavanagh Street, Southbank, Victoria. The Australian Ballet performs on a regular basis in the Arts Centre, Melbourne, and the Sydney Opera House as well as other interstate venues. The Company also tours overseas. 3. SPECIFIC ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Interpretation of design Consult with cutters & designers to establish cut and shape of costumes Develop patterns from designs supplied Make toiles for designers, as required Meet choreographers costume requirements during rehearsal period Construction of new costumes Assist Cutters with planning quantities of fabrics required Cut costumes Sew costumes, supervise and instruct costumiers to sew costumes Conduct and at times supervise fittings and include costumiers when appropriate Refurbishment of costumes Assist with refurbishment, repair and refit of existing productions and when required assess any additional costumes required to cover the casts Assist Cutters with planning quantities of fabrics required Arrange, supervise and conduct fittings and include the relevant costumier as assistant when appropriate Staff management When required under the direction of the Gentlemen s Cutter, supervise the work in progress through the fitting stage to the completed costume Encourage and maintain a productive and amicable working relationship between all workroom staff

3 Measurement files and stock control Maintain files of dancers measurements Record materials used and assist in the notation of relevant files for archiving Other duties Undertake any other duties as reasonably requested by Head Cutters or Head of Costume Workshop 4. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: Experience in costume cutting Experience in costume construction and maintenance Satisfactory Police Records check arranged by The Australian Ballet 5. ATTRIBUTES: To successfully fulfil the roles and responsibilities as outlined above, the Assistant Gentlemen s Cutter should demonstrate the following skills, knowledge and personal qualities:- High level of cutting/tailoring skills High level of costume making skills Costume maintenance skills Ability to use industrial sewing machinery Pressing skills Effective communication skills Fabric knowledge High work standards Quality awareness Ability to remain calm under pressured conditions Flexibility and adaptability Patience and understanding Appreciation of the artistic temperament of a ballet dancer and their performance demands Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team Ability to plan, organise and prioritise Attention to detail Flexible KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS: costumes are sewn to the standard required by The Australian Ballet as determined by Wardrobe Production Manager and/or Gentlemen s Cutter Costumes are prepared on time to meet all fitting schedules Costumes are completed on time for every costume rehearsal/season Standards set by the Wardrobe Production Manager and Gentlemen s Cutter are achieved Feedback to Gentlemen s Cutter is positive including feedback from dancers Costumes function as they should in performance 7. FEEDBACK AND ANNUAL PERFORMANCE REVIEW: Feedback from the Gentlemen s Cutter throughout the year should be constructive, critical and timely.

4 The Assistant Gentlemen s Cutter will actively participate in an annual performance review with the Gentlemen s Cutter. The review will focus on fulfillment of the Specific Roles and Responsibilities and the achievement of the Key Performance Indicators together with planning objectives for the forthcoming year, developed in collaboration with the Gentlemen s Cutter and the Wardrobe Production Manager. The Australian Ballet will support identified resources and training required to achieve the objectives. 8. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION: Due to the geographic layout and nature of work the Assistant Gentlemen s Cutter will be required to undertake a diversity of tasks which may require various forms of mobility.
