6 JDRF s Mission and Objectives FY18-20 Karen Addington Chief Executive Our Vision and Mission The vision of JDRF is a world without type 1 diabetes and our mission is to eradicate type 1 diabetes and its effects for people in the UK. To achieve our mission we: Fund research to cure, treat and prevent type 1 diabetes Work to accelerate the pace of research and the delivery of treatments in the UK Give support and a voice to children and adults living with type 1 and their families FY15-17 Results FY15-17 has been a period of growth and increased delivery in every area of JDRF s operations. In this period: We will spend 2.2m on research in FY17, which is above target 11 million of EU funding has been committed to active type 1 diabetes projects Three research fellows have received the JDRF UK Research Communication Award Just two partnerships have yielded the target of over 1.5million per year of partnership funding into type 1 research. On its own, our partnership with The Wellcome Trust supporting genetics research in Cambridge brings 8million into type 1 research over five years The launch of Type 1 Research Today which tracked type 1 research funding across the UK and showed an increase in research funding by Government since 2012 There has been Diabetes All Party Parliamentary reviews into education and variations of care NICE guidelines have been issued on sensor augmented pumps following JDRF input JDRF, Diabetes UK and INPUT authored guidance on access to CGM for families and adults A new network of community engagement coordinators has launched across the country JDRF university and pregnancy toolkits and the new schools pack have launched, as has an e-learning module for teachers and school staff supported by us We have increased media coverage, including 93 pieces of national coverage in FY17, and enhanced social media engagement every year We have launched a new website leading to increased time on site, page visits and an increase in donations and transactions We are forecasting to achieve the 6million target of sustainable income in FY17 FY18-20 Context for Strategy Development Through a process of volunteer and staff consultations, stretching objectives that will deliver progress towards JDRF s vision of a world without type 1 diabetes have been set for FY We will increase research funding in years where income increases. To progress towards our mission, we will also continue to increase the effectiveness of our work in research partnerships, advocacy, awareness, support and information, and will also need to increase our free reserves. To achieve this, new strategies and tactics will be explored in research partnerships, including developing UK specific funding mechanisms, large scale cross-disease partnerships, and alternative funding sources to replace EU funding that may be lost. These are vital as we believe 6

7 that our own research funding can be equalled or even surpassed by these research collaborations. We recognised the important role that JDRF is playing internationally in influencing market access to speed up access to new treatments and technologies. This is a gap that exists in the UK and we will prioritise increasing JDRF UK s influence in this area. Board and staff recognised the need to invest in areas of our fundraising portfolio that have significant growth potential, particularly individual giving and legacies. There was agreement in 2016 that the 1:3 fundraising ratio, which was set to act as a guide for investment choices during a recession, should be relaxed where we believe that increased investment may accelerate progress in achieving mission or growing net income. We also recognised the need to invest in staff to achieve our mission. We must value, develop and reward them in order to retain and develop their skills and new JDRF initiatives. JDRF should consider the threats to key staff and where in the organisation the relationships are more important; this is where we need longevity. We also need to increase management capacity and recruit more experienced staff. Key strategic points for FY18-20 Research funding and Research Partnerships Aim for a cumulative target for research over the next three years of 7.5 million. Develop multi-year research funding partnerships, building on UK strengths, leveraging 6 million over three years Engage in small-medium scale partnerships to stimulate training and development of type 1 diabetes researchers in the UK, totalling at least 250,000 over three years Research advocacy and treatment delivery Influence policy changes that will affect JDRF s UK based research in the next five years, most notably our exit from the European Union and the merging of the budgets of the Research Councils to form UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) Build new networks and relationships in Scotland that will support new funding partnership initiatives Develop a new patient access strategy to help us be more influential and effective in treatment funding decisions made by the NHS Support, information and awareness Increase acquisition of supporters most likely to lead to achieving JDRF s income targets Ensure JDRF has relevant support and information for families of children with type 1 at: diagnosis, schools, transition of schools, clinic transition (paediatrics into adult care), university and information for carers Ensure JDRF has easily accessible relevant support and information for adults at: transition, adult diagnosis, university, workplace, and pregnancy Investigate increased peer to peer community engagement in the type 1 community Build staff and volunteer networks to reach and engage more families and adults through clinics and other routes around the country 7

8 Income Aim to raise a cumulative total income in excess of 20million, reaching circa 7.5 million per year by FY20 Aim clear and deliverable growth strategies for each component part of fundraising activity Invest in areas of fundraising that will give us the greatest chance of long term financial growth and stability this may include investment in new areas as well as divesting ourselves of activities with poorer returns Access new and existing technologies in order to deliver and process higher volumes of voluntary income in the most efficient and effective way. Organise ourselves in ways that enable collaborative and integrated working in order to maximise the chances of fundraising success. Human Resources Recruit staff with the right skills and attitude by identifying and describing the skills needed for particular roles and ensuring an effective recruitment Staff will understand and work in line with JDRF culture and core values, and be aware of what expectations the organisation has around their delivery Staff will understand what professional and personal development looks like for them at JDRF and what JDRF expects of them. JDRF will ensure that there are structures and policies that meet the people needs of the departments across JDRF People should be encouraged to feel positive about working at JDRF, by embedding the culture and values from induction onwards. Reward, recognition and career development should be considered as well as other motivators 8
