1 SAINSBURY RESEARCH UNIT Part-Time Editorial Assistant (0.6 FTE) Fixed term for 6 months Ref: SC2753 The Sainsbury Research Unit requires someone who can help with copy editing a book which is one of the main outputs of the Crossroads of Empires archaeological project lead by Dr Anne Haour (REN Ref: R18333). This 5-year, ERC funded project is due to come to completion in December 2015 and this book is a key output with contributions from some 30 colleagues, from several different countries, all of whom have been involved with the project over the past 4.5 years. A qualified copy editor would be ideal and the essential skills we need are proficiency in drawing programmes such as the Adobe creative suite (Illustrator/In Design/Photoshop) or Corel Draw graphic suite (CorelDraw/ Photopaint/Photozoom Pro3), all programmes which will enable the person to carry out vector drawing (redrawing, simple maps, logos etc.) and edit photos (improve resolution/colour, light/colour effect/textures). Desirable competencies include knowledge on InDesign and ArcGis, but these are not essential. This part-time (0.6FTE) post is available from 12 October 2015 for 6 months. 2 Salary will be 18,031 to 20,198 per annum on Grade 4 on the single salary spine. The normal expectation is that starting salary will be at the minimum of the advertised salary scale. Starting date The post is available from 12 October 2015 on a part-time basis (0.6fte) for a fixed term period of 6 months. Terms and Conditions of appointment Full details of terms and conditions of employment for Secretarial & Clerical staff will be made available to the candidate to whom the appointment is offered. Annual Leave Entitlement There is an annual holiday entitlement of 20 days plus statutory (8 days) and customary (6 days) holidays. Superannuation The post is superannuable under the Universities Superannuation Scheme. 5 APPENDIX A JOB DESCRIPTION REF: SC2753 Job Title: Editorial Assistant Grade: Grade 4 Department: Reporting to: Sainsbury Research Unit Anne Haour/Lynne Crossland Job Function/Purpose: This is an exciting position for someone who would like to further their experience in academic publishing and communication. The post is aimed at someone with who is proficient in vector graphics programmes and has a careful eye for proofreading and demonstrable abilities to manage their time and duties in order to bring a project to completion. Crossroads of Empires is a major archaeological and anthropological research project, with a large team that has been carrying out fieldwork in Benin, West Africa. The project leader, Dr Haour, needs assistance with aspects of routine production, management and communication, especially in connection with finalising the project publications. Main duties will involve administrative support to Dr Haour, preparing text and image documents in preparation for publication, and liaising with coauthors and team members. Main duties include: Proofreading and copy-editing articles and summaries, ensuring quality and consistency Keeping production schedules up-to-date and ensuring processes are in place to meet deadlines Preparing illustrations to support publications: e.g. redrawing field plans and section drawings, preparing simple maps Editing existing graphics, in particular photos (improving resolution, colour, light, or texture; cropping, resizing, inserting insets, etc.) Participating in the storage, archiving and/or shipping of samples and reference collection Collating analytical data Compiling and sending out newsletters Where appropriate, assisting Dr Haour in responding to queries (from the general public, university and researchers) and forwarding to other team members as necessary Providing general administrative assistance including organising meetings, travel and events Additional administrative/library-based work commensurate with the grade of the post as agreed with Dr Haour Any other such duties as may be assigned by the Manager
