1 The International Mining for Development Centre was established in late 2011 as a key element in the Australian governments Mining for Development initiative. As part of our activity program, we are organising a program in Tarkwa, Ghana focused on the management of Large Volume Waste in the resources sector. The five day program will be held in November, and will involve a group of 20 representatives from government and academic institutions from Africa. The aim of this program is to provide an understanding of design, management and monitoring principles for large volume waste facilities associated with mining operations, across the full life cycle of a mine. This topic is a critical element in both minimising longterm environmental risks and liabilities, which can arise from poor management of such facilities, and also maximising opportunities for post mining land use. The program will address covers for waste facilities and site rehabilitation from a technical and policy viewpoint. The program will be held in partnership with the University of Mines and Technology, Ghana and led by Winthrop Professor Andy Fourie from the School of Civil and Resource Engineering, The University of Western Australia. IM4DC will fund the costs of sponsored participants including tuition fees, return economy airfares, accommodation and meals for the duration of the tour. Further details regarding precise travel dates and arrangements will be provided once we have confirmed participant details. The proposed dates of the program are from Monday 25th November to Friday 29 th November
